8/6/20142 hoursI worked with Maria Vilchis, Personal Trainer at Gold's Gym, for the first time. I was introduced to clients as her shadow who is working on a senior project on Fitness and Nutrition. For the first hour, we worked with one of her longterm clients and observed how she trained them. The next hour, I aided her in teaching her cardio class.2 hours
4
8/7/20142 hoursI returned to the gym to work with Maria on her next two clients. The first client didn't arrive for her appointment, so Maria and I discussed about the types of food one should eat in order to achieve a healthier life style along with how big portions should be for every meal. With the second client, I was able to help Maria train her.4 hours
5
8/8/20142 hoursI worked with Maria with another client, but observed what she changes in her training style to deal with different types of clients. The next client we worked with was new so I was able to see how Maria gathers all her information in order to determine what type of tips and training the new client would need.6 hours
6
8/11/20142 hoursMaria and I both trained a client together for the first hour. The next hour, I helped Maria with her class for women who are trying to lose weight and tone their bodies.8 hours

MENTORSHIP HOURS
9
10/1/20142 hoursI met Dr. Russikoff for the first time. We just got comfortable with each other, with me telling her my background story and why I decided to do my senior project on language acquisition. We also talked about what I could do to get my mentorship hours in. She also recommended me taking her Language Acquisition class, which I decided to do for my independent component.2 hours
10
10/8/20142 hoursI visited the English Department so I can get my override signed and Dr. Russikoff taught me the IPA since I missed the first day of the ENG 323 class. It was basically me catching up because the class itself is very rigorous. Missing a day would be missing a lot of content.4 hours
11
10/13/20142 hoursI was given some quizzes from her 1:00-1:50 PM ENG 323 class to grade. She also told me about her RET program where she takes students on a work trip to China where they teach children how to speak English for three months. I'll keep that in mind when I turn 21.6 hours
12
10/15/20142 hoursI interviewed DR. Russikoff for the second interview and she told me how she started as a cabaret singer and moved onto studying linguistics in USC. The woman has a rather interesting, yet inspiring, past. 8 hours

26
4/1/20152 hoursI did some research on some methods I could use in teaching Lawrence how to speak English. I started reading this book called "Beyond Methods," which is about methods a language teacher can use to give their students the most effecient language learning experience.38 hours
27
4/4/20155 hoursI went to a seminar with Dr. Russikoff where all these linguists would meet and just talk about if they had any new findings, new hypotheses, and such. Dr. Krashen wasn't there, unforutunately. I couldn't recognize anyone else from the meeting, so I just tuned in and sat there quietly. Appearantly Spanish will become the most spoken language in the United States by 2020.43 hours
28
4/6/20154 hoursI stayed in Dr. Russikoff's office, acting as her T.A. and helped her grade some papers for both her graduate class and undergraduate class. I also attended one of her lectures since my parents wouldn't be able to pick me up until later, and I hate taking the bus.47 hours

34
10/1/20142 hoursCrashed Dr. Russikoff's ENG 323 class. I missed the first class, unforunately, so I was confused when the class was going over the IPA homework, but I was able to catch on quickly. The class was taught phonetics2 hours
35
10/8/20142 hoursThe class was shown a video that briefed over some theories and factors behind first language acquisition.4 hours
36
10/13/20142 hoursClass began with a quiz on the IPA and articulatory descriptions of certain phonemes. We did a station-system activitiy on an article, "Native Speaker Abilities," where we would pick a partner and walk around the room to write down our knowledge on important terms mentioned in the article.6 hours
37
10/15/20142 hoursClass opened with once again, a quiz. We were taught the milestones of first language acquisition along with morphemes, the smallest unit of meaning. To tie in these two new terms, the class was also taught MLU, which is Mean Language Utterance. MLU is basically using morphemes to determine whether or not the child is developing language at a natural rate.8 hours
38
10/20/20142 hoursAgain, the class opened up with a quiz. We've become conditioned to it. Dr. Russikoff went over the three dominant theories of first language acquisition: Behaviorism, Innatness, and Interactionist.10 hours
39
10/22/20142 hoursWe watched a documentary of Genie, the Wild Child. The purpose of this was to utilize our knowledge on language acquisition and see why Genie was never able to fully learn how to speak.12 hours

INDEPENDENT COMPONENT 2 HOURS
52
4/1/20152 hoursI took the bus to the Paje residence after school and saw Lawrence. I just engaged in some basic conversation with him, such as "How was your day?", "What did you do?",and stuff like that just to get the basic feel of his current English competence. As I expected, he didn't say as much to me, so it was hard to get some output from him until we started talking about hot wheels. Once I got him going, it was really hard to shut the kid up. His English isn't that great, but he does know the basic communication skills.2 hours
53
4/3/20155 hoursOnce school was dismissed at 12:38, I took the bus to the Paje's house, which only takes 10 minutes. Since Lawrence was still on spring break at the time, I was able to spend a lot of time with him, which is beneficial for me since I need 30 hours for my independent component. We basically played some Mario Kart and some Minecraft, and we had some fun. Of course, I taught him some English today so it would be viable for me to log in these hours. As we played, I would tell him what to say when such as "Aw, I lost. It was a good game though" or "I will use the pickaxe." Basically, for every action he did in the games, I made him verbalize it. I feel like it really helped expand his vocabulary as well as his competence. He was still kind of shy, but he was talking more, which is always good.7 hours
54
4/5/20154 hoursThe Paje's had a party, and of course, since we're close family friends, my family was invited. I saw this as an opportunity to work on my independent component, so I mainly hung out with Lawrence and babysat him throughout the event. I watched him ride his bicycle around, and I taught him how to say the parts of a bicycle. (ex. "This is the handle. I use it to stop.") We also played Uno with some of the other kids at the party, and I taught him the colors, saying the tagalog word for it first before saying the English word so he can make the correlation between the two languages. I still have to intitiate his output many times, but it's alright. As long as he's speaking.11 hours
55
4/7/20152 hoursEven if it is spring break, I still had college classes to attend. It's fine though, because I can still go to Lawrence's house and get some free food along with getting in some hours for my independent component. Today, I taught Lawrence how to pronounce certain diagraphs properly so he won't have such a strong Filipino accent when he speaks. Since he's young, it will be easier to teach him how to speak English without the accent of his native tongue. 13 hours
56
4/8/20154 hoursI went to Lawrence's house after class again. He had Taekwando practice today, and since I was already at the house, his mom just invited me to tag along. I did, and it was really cool to watch him do martial arts. To put in some English learning for Lawrence, I asked him to do some cool tricks for me, and tried to get some output out from him when he was on his breaks. Like, I would ask him to compliment some of the people's taekwando moves, such as "Wow. That was a really cool move." and stuff like that.17 hours
57
4/12/20155 hoursBoth of our families, along with another family friend, the Ilagans, had a big picnic at the Santa Fe Dam near my house. It was a pretty fun time. Again, I hung out with Lawrence, and he has opened up a lot to me. He hugged me the moment he saw me, and he started talking to me about the new toys he got over the weekend. Of course, he spoke to me in Tagalog, but I replied in English, and he actualy understood what I was saying (or at least, I'm assuming.) I brought some children books I have bought from Barne's and Nobles and we just sat together inside a tent and I read to him. I read my personal favorite, "Press Here", which taught him colors and actions in a really fun and creative way. He was laughing like crazy, and he wanted read it over and over again.21 hours
58
4/13/20152 hoursI just played video games with Lawrence today until my mother picked me up. I noticed him using the vocabulary I taught him, and he verbalized all the things that happened in the game, which was something I was really proud of. He also started calling me "Ate Alyka." Ate is the title a younger boy will call their older sister. Lawrence is really comfortable with me now. We're homies! 23 hours
59
4/14/20152 hoursI didn't see Lawrence today, but I researched on some methods for effective second language teaching for children. I want to teach Lawrence as much English as I possibly can.25 hours
60
4/15/20152 hoursI read to Lawrence again, but this time, a book about crayon with an identity crisis. Not only did it teach him about colors, but it also taught him about how to be yourself and don't let other people influence you. We also sang some songs and played some games. It was a very relaxing day.27 hours
61
4/19/20155 hoursI finished up my hours today. Lawrence and I hung out, and there is a significant increase in his English skills from the first time I have started teaching him. He was actually talking to me in complex sentences and he knows how to pronounce his "th"'s now! So proud. We had a conversation, and he talked a lot. We read some higher level books today, and we sang some karaoke. It was basically a day of hanging out and seeing how much Lawrence has progressed in comparison to how he was speaking a couple of weeks ago.32 hours
