Shelley KleinSbruceklein@hotmail.com202-213-1989Given that social media algorithms, politically aligned media and cynical, opportunistic politicians have successfully encouraged large swaths of the population to be distrustful of "experts" (including scientists and doctors for instance) and hostile to "elites" (including "the media" and academics), is it possible to get back to a culture and a politics based on shared truths? How? What can we do to help?

Mary Slattery Johnsonmslatjohnson@gmail.com I hope you have enjoyed a bit of summer with your family. Now that the US is entering an election cycle, which of your recommendations for social media have been adopted? Which ones need immediate action? Big Hugs!!

Susan Kirrrunsarisk@gmail.com512-496-9078Do you believe social media platforms can still foment significant social change movements, or is that even possible anymore?

Pauline Merrill Pauline.merrill@gmail.com312-399-1411Is there a way to continue to utilize the "social convenience" of Facebook (keeping up with friends' bdays, travels, etc), without supporting its politically destabilizing aspects?

Roberta Sprayrcspray@gmail.com973-769-1962Hi Maria! Ditto on question from Pauline. I heard at another conference years ago that we should take Facebook off our phones at the very least. But I depend on it to be part of conversations between AP teachers in the Facebook group. Also, it seems we should also be concerned about AI spreading disinformation since it has no bias check, would you agree? Last question if there is time - I screen shooted your quote "That is why propaganda networks are so effective in rewriting history, the distribution spread of a lie is so much greater than the fact-check that follows, and by the time the lie is debunked, those who believe it often refuse to change their views..." We certainly saw this in the US with the mask mixed messages during Covid. The Atlantic Monthly (and I can't find the link) published a wonderful article on this as well. How can journalists seek to promote the facts to debunk the lies? This is frustrating to me on a personal level as well. It is easier to teach a student who knows nothing than to revise their incorrect learning.

Sean Quinlansquinlan@alumni.princeton.edu206-388-7599Early on, was Facebook more influential in the Phillippines than in the US? If so, why? Was it due to the free internet program that Facebook sponsored? -- Also, should governments be regulating companies like Facebook more? Or does the solution to the problem they present lie elsewhere?
