July 22: Northwest Coop
9:00AM - 3:00PMIn-PersonStatewide6AWARE Team Staffer100Based on the work of Kristin Souers and Pete Hall, this session will walk educators through what trauma-invested teachers do and how a trauma-invested classroom functions. Educators will develop a greater understanding of the impact of trauma on young children, how the impact can shape young people as they develop into adults, and how those impacts can impede a child’s ability to learn over the course of their development. A trauma-invested classroom provides both availability and accountability; an artful balance between firm and kind. This workshop helps educators to fully understand that balance and begins the mindset shift it will take for recommended strategies and interventions to be effective.June 4th Session #: 521141 *Please note: Other session dates must be scheduled through the coop*

July 11th at NW Coop; July 12th at Guy Fenter Coop
9:00AM - 3:00PMIn-PersonNW Coop and Guy Fenter Coop; Others Upon Request6AWARE Team Staffer100Motivational Interviewing is a brief client-centered counseling style used to motivate adolescents and adults to change risky behaviors and adopt healthy or productive behaviors that align with their values (Miller & Rollnick, 2012). Motivational Interviewing can be used by school counselors, school nurses, and school administrators in their conversations with students. The four processes of MI (Engagement, Focus, Evocation of Change Talk, and Planning for Change) will be reviewed. We will practice ways to elicit, recognize, and respond to change talk to help adolescent students achieve their goals. When engaging in MI this is done through the use of OARS (open-ended questions, affirmations, reflections, and summaries). We will discuss how MI strategies can be used in consultation with other school professionals on behalf of students of all ages. Motivational Interviewing is a style that can help build a growth mindset in students (Dweck) and can help lead to school cultures and climates that are safe and engaging.CO-OP scheduled

9:00AM - 3:00PMIn-PersonDeQeen-Mena Coop; NW coop; Guy Fenter Coop6AWARE Team Staffer100Students who are young have a more difficult time, in general, regulating their emotions. We see this in the classroom as “meltdowns” and “outbursts". When students have trauma, adversity, chaos, inconsistency, or any number of other things piled on top of that, it is even more difficult for them to regulate their emotions. As a result, we need to be increasingly more skilled in our ability to de-escalate the moment and help our students return to a state of regulation. We’re not offering quick fixes. We’re offering the opportunity to learn how real change happens. This workshop will be interactive and will start you on your way to developing solid and reliable de-escalation skills for our young students.CO-OP scheduled
