Tests confirm that the horse is building on the elements from lower levels and is developing more engagement to show sufficient impulsion as the lengthened jog and lope are performed. The horse demonstrates a more consistent light contact with the bit. These tests introduce some collection, lateral and longitudinal balance, suppleness and emphasize harmony and ride-ability.RIDER #8577

#8577, 8577-1 Kelly Gribauval

Your horse has a lovely long stride most of the time, and you are a well balanced rider. I think that perhaps he is struggling a bit on slightly uneven footing and could use a little more engagement to help him stay balanced through the entire test. You present a very nice picture and harmonious partnership. At this level we want to see "more", more uphill balance, more engagement, more throughness, more consistency in the connection.

I also school and show on grass, and school in my hay field and pastures. It's good for the horse and rider to work on varied terrain. The training opportunities are endless,

To improve those qualities, clear transitions between gaits and within the gaits need to be done often. One of my favorite exercises to help with bend, balance, suppleness and connection is lengthening and shortening on a large circle. Put the horse in jog or lope, with a clear bending around your inside leg and seat bone, When the tempo is steady, use both of your legs to ask for a longer stride, keep the contact soft and following but enough that he stays on the bit, the frame should lengthen slightly as the stride lengthens, but don't throw the reins away. Get a quick response from your leg aids, then follow the motion with your seat and arms, but be passive with the legs. Lengthen half the circle, then sit taller while still following the motion with your seat, and think of making the lope or jog shorter and quicker so that he doesn't slow down. Try to use your hands as little as possible, a soft opening and closing of the fist to help the horse come together is fine, a passive contact with the inside rein at the same time will help keep the bend the same. You will find that it takes a quicker leg aid to shorten the stride than to lengthen .This will keep the hind legs coming under while you change the length of stride. Try to get response within the first 2 or 3 strides, then be passive with your legs, but ready to give reminders if he falls apart.
Use the same concept with transitions from one gait to the next, use both of your legs to help him keep both hind legs working equally. Do jog-lope-jog while keeping the same bend and connection (frame). Half a circle or 3/4 of the circle in each gait to start with, then transition more often. An eventual goal would be 6 strides in each gait keeping bend and impulsion. That's an end product, and should only be done for a few minute.

While doing these exercises, keep the contact as soft as possible with half halts as needed. In the Half halts, stretch tall, hug with your upper calves, close your fingers and then release all your aids a half stride later. Think about the hind legs coming under and the front end lifting. As the balance shifts to the hind legs, the neck will become rounder, the poll slightly higher and the contact even softer. then you know he's carrying himself.
