Physics and Astronomy Students' Events and Recreation Society$960.39OliverBrownolliebrown44@gmail.comMonthly Events2024-02-02PHASERS plans to use funds to run and expand upon existing monthly events offered to both physics and astronomy students and UVic students in general. Using the additional funding we will be able to open the attendance of our popular monthly event, Night With a Professor, to the entire UVic student body. The event consists of a meet and greet followed by a talk presented by a physics/astronomy professor on their current research. PHASERS also plans to provided snacks and refreshments for our general meetings in order to increase turnout and engagement from members. We began doing so in the previous year and have seen turnout for meetings steadily increase. Lastly we plan to host an event for physics and astronomy undergrads to display and communicate about their previous or ongoing research within the department.PHASERS plans to use the additional funding to increase turnout and student engagement with the course union. This will benefit both UVic as a whole and the undergrads of the physics and astronomy department by increasing socialization and networking between students and professors and between students and other students. Additionally, more funding has allowed us to open up events that were previously restricted to the department to the entire UVic undergrad student body.140Course Union Event (bake sale, car wash, event ticket sales)Night With A Professor700Semi Annual general meetings600Student Research500

Engineering Student Society$263.06MalcolmSeydmalcolmseyd@uvic.cavikeCTF2024-03-15We are planning a weekend-long cybersecurity competition for UVic students to sharpen their skills and make industry connections. This competition will consist of a series of challenges ranging in difficulty, both to engage curious learners and draw-in more talented hackers. There will also be industry “fireside chats” where members of the community can engage with potential employers and mentors from the Victoria tech community. This event will last all weekend, with opening and closing presentations on campus, and fireside chats hybrid or in-person at the request of the industry members. We require $150 to host the competition’s computer infrastructure, $150 for in-person considerations like food, beverages, and posters, and $300 to secure guest speakers and industry mentors. We’re giving students the chance to build their skills in a fun and engaging environment alongside friends. They will get to apply their skills to real-world scenarios and learn what it’s like to be a real cybersecurity professional. Through the fireside chats, we hope to integrate the industry with the UVic cybersecurity community and connect passionate students with exciting career opportunities.0OtherPizza - About 15 pizzas from dominos, 5 vegan pizzas from panago, and gas money (cheaper than delivery)265.3Infrastructure - Cloud compute, databases, and network load balancers, for both testing and production traffic227.74

Biochemistry and Microbiology Students' Society$1,600.65ZoeyNguzoey11042002@gmail.comMeet the Prof Night and Spring Social2024-02-06BMSS Meet the Prof Night aims to inspire students by showcasing the personal and professional journeys of three faculty members, typically two professors and a lab instructor. This event provides insight into the importance of visualizing future career paths and planning ahead to achieve academic and professional goals. Furthermore, this event allows students the opportunity to ask attending faculty members questions regarding career decisions, opportunities, and highlights in a more relaxed environment. The event also serves as a platform for students to network with attending faculty members which can provide the opportunity to investigate potential research/laboratory experience opportunities in the department. The BMSS Spring Social/Mixer aims to provide a relaxed, non-academic environment in which students and faculty members can network with each other. This allows students the opportunity to initiate conversations and discussions with faculty members outside of lectures and get to know their professors and lab instructors better outside of the academic setting. The connections fostered at this event can lead to research experience opportunities, better professional relationships with faculty members, and provide students with insight into how their professors made it to the positions they now hold.Stimulate students’ interest in their academic career and provide a more relaxed environment in which students can learn about potential career paths and research opportunities. Positive engagement between students and faculty members. Students in the BCMB department will be able to foster meaningful connections with faculty members in the Faculty of Science. These connections will benefit the students in their academic careers by enabling them with the skills to communicate effectively with their professors as well as providing them with an opportunity to inquire about potential research experience opportunities. Both faculty members and students will be given a space at this event to wind down and enjoy socializing with attending members of the department.150OtherFood catering- for meet the prof night as a snack for invited faculty and members attending this include snacks and light refreshments.1500Large Catering- For Spring Social, we would get catering by food services on campus in order to host a large event, the cost includes setting up and clean up. English Students' Association$1,333.88MayaLinsleymlinsleyy@gmail.comESA Spring 2024 Events2024-02-27The ESA will host one community event per month in the Spring 2024 Term:

January: Trash Talk, an open mic social event where students share their strangest or worst essays/essay topics. The event doubles as a fundraiser for a cause of choice by the current executive board.

February: Careers Night, a panel event bringing together professionals with BAs in English for conversation with each other and with UVic students.

March: Poetry Open Mic, to be hosted in collaboration with the Victoria Poetry Project, will take place at Caffe Fantastico and provide an open mic and community mingling opportunity for writers at UVic.

April: the annual Albatross journal launch event, where the ESA will officially release Vol. 14 of the Albatross English Undergraduate Journal, and celebrate the authors and editors among the English community.

The ESA will also be funding social gatherings for its two sister projects, the English Peer Mentorship Program and the BIPOC English Collective (new in 2024!). These programs bridge gaps within the English community and bring students together in solidarity and support.
The ESA's primary objective is to enrich the social, intellectual, and professional health of the English department, with a focus on student wellbeing and engagement. As such, we are responsive to needs in our community and work hard to maintain an active roster of events that address those needs––such as a lack of support for BIPOC students, and a lack of knowledge around English career pathways––while contributing to an overall sense of department camaraderie and fun.70Course Union Event (bake sale, car wash, event ticket sales)Community events for February, March, and April – catering and space rental1650English Peer Mentorship Program – social gathering(s) and participation funding (for coffee chats etc.)350BIPOC English Collective - promotional startup and social gatherings500

Underlings (Undergraduate Linguistics Course Union)$533.55CyThompsoncynanthompson@gmail.comSpring Events2024-02-06Study & Games Night Events - Study and Games Nights are held monthly for undergraduate linguistics students. We offer spaces to study and play games.

Collaboration Events - Collaboration events include a film night with the ASL Club and community-building event with other course unions in the upcoming Humanities "merger" (i.e., Germanic and Slavic Studies, Equipe UVic, Hispanic and Italian Studies).
Study & Games Night Events - These events are a welcoming space for undergraduates to both socialize and support each other outside the classroom. Our budget goes toward offering free food to all attendees and occasionally free learning materials such as stationary in goodie bags.

Collaboration Events - These collaboration events will benefit the UVic community because they offer opportunities for undergraduates across disciplines to share ideas and build lasting connections in anticipation of the upcoming Humanities "merger" where our departments will be combined into one in the new year. Allocating a budget for the ASL Club movie night will ensure all participants will be included as the funding will go toward hiring a skilled ASL interpreter.

Undergraduate Chemistry Students' Society (ChemSoc)$1,067.10HaileyGrayhaileyngray@uvic.caChemistry Department Awards Ceremony, Meet the Prof Event, ChemSoc Merch (Fundraiser)2024-04-04Student awards ceremony to be held at the Grad House at the beginning of April/end of March (TBD). This event is relatively self explanatory in that it is an awards ceremony to celebrate the chemistry students who were given awards in the 2023-2024 year. It will bring together grad students, professors and undergrads to celebrate these students.

The Meet the Prof event will be a social event for undergraduates to mingle with professors. The aim of this event is for undergraduates to learn more about each chemistry professor's research and have an opportunity to network toward a laboratory research position in a lab.

The ChemSoc merch is what we intended to spend our academic fund on last semester, but had complications with a provider and we were unable to complete the project. We had a local artist design merch designs for us which are super cool! We are hoping to raise money from this merch to pay for additional events in future semesters.
I think it is important for these award recipients to be celebrated for all of their hard work and to acknowledge all of those who helped them to get where they are today. I think events like these entice students to work towards their goals and aim to achieve awards and recognition for the following year. It is also a rare occasion to get an entire department together from grad students to faculty to undergrads to build a community and celebrate each others hard work.

The Meet the Prof event is a fantastic network opportunity for undergraduates to meet professors in a relaxed setting. It is so important to get students involved in research or at least provide them with the opportunity to learn more about chemistry research here at UVic.

The fundraiser will raise money for ChemSoc for future event expenses so we do not have to apply for the academic fund or at least not to the same extent. ChemSoc has also expanded quite a lot this year and hopefully as we take on more executives we are able to organize more and more ChemSoc events for everyone to attend.

I apologize for this form being so full! Is there a way for future forms to have options for multiple events rather than just one? Cheers :)

BFA Grad Show$1,067.10ClaireJorgensenuvicbfa401@gmail.comBFA Grad Show 20242024-04-15The purpose of the BFA Grad Show is to exhibit the artistic efforts of the 2024 Visual Arts BFA Exhibition and Professional practices class. This week-long exhibition will transform Visual arts building, the rooms and studios, into an immersive gallery space for the University and public to enjoy. The show consists of painting, photography, drawing, sculpture, and installation. The BFA grad show offers a valuable opportunity for our members to have their work installed and displayed in a professional setting. One which will be publicized to the community. This show is of equal importance to the artist catalogue both of which are the culmination of the previous four years. The BFA Grad Show is an opportunity for students to experience first hand the process of planning, curating, and professionally exhibiting artworks; engaging in our art community. This is a highly anticipated event that is the accumulation of all the hard work and effort of each student and their time at UVic. The exhibition will provide professional networking opportunities for the artists and community. Music Students Association$320.13CalvinRansomuvicmsa01@gmail.comVictoria Symphony - Victoria in Love2024-01-28To subsidize tickets to the Victoria Symphony Concert "Victoria in Love" for members of the School of Music Body.

The concert will take place at the Royal Theatre in Downtown Victoria.

Students will need to arrange their own transportation to and from the concert.
Attending music concerts is an integral part of the study of music. This concert features music by a wide variety of composers across an equally wide range of styles. Some of the music was originally composed for the Ballet, others for Musical Theatre, some for the "Big Screen" and other parts for the home television set.

In most UVic Large Ensemble concerts, we often only play music from a single era, this concert uses a totally different style of programming which will hopefully inspire new programmatic possibilities.

This concert is valuable to all music students regardless of nature: Musicology students will see how the single concept of "love" is portrayed through the ages. Composition majors will be able to hear a wide array of compositional styles. Music education majors could use the different approach to programming in their future classrooms. Performance majors will see professionals playing their instrument at the highest level (in fact, some UVic music students are so good that they are members of the Victoria Symphony so we are also showing support to our own students by attending this concert).

Bureau of Sociology Students$106.71DaichiLarocque9dlarocque@gmail.comBureau of Sociology Students Presents: Sociology Study Sessions2024-01-31The Bureau of Sociology Students (BOSS) has successfully held study sessions for some of the important classes within the Department of Sociology. These sessions include upper-level sociology students helping lower-level students with classes that are either important or notoriously difficult. The funding allocated for these study sessions would be used on resources to help enrich the experience and amount of time we could spend helping students succeed in their classes. We have held polls with students and talked with the professors who run these classes and they have said that the study session helps them regarding that specific class. We do not have a specific date for the event as there will be multiple throughout the semester. As per fundraising, we have not made any efforts yet, however, we have many members on the board who are passionate about baking and crochet, and BOSS would love to hold a crochet or baked goods sale to raise funds for the events.Overall, these study sessions benefit the students who are involved, the students who need help and the professors teaching the class. They help us by helping us connect with the larger student body and helping to build a sense of community. In addition, they help the students by enriching them in their studies. Lastly, they help the professors by offloading many questions they may have received during office hours or their email. These events are a win-win for everyone and funding for them would allow for an overall better experience.0Course Union Event (bake sale, car wash, event ticket sales)Snacks and Beverages150Study tools - Online resources, paywalls for these resources50
