Overview:
17
Strengths:Notes:
18
Hand FightingHe is quick, precise, and strong with his punches when edge rushers try to get into his chest.
19
Potential Out in SpaceGreat natural athleticism and speed for the position. He often will whiff on blocks out in space, but has excellent potential.
20
Foot QuicknessFautanu is very light on his feet.
21
22
Weaknesses:Notes:
23
BalanceBalance is a major issue that will hinder any potential success at the next level if not addressed immediately. This is especially the case if he goes on to play left tackle, which seems unlikely.
24
CountersHe gets crossed over very easily by edge rushers. This is mostly stemming from his balance and is why he will probably bump inside.
25
ConsistencyHe has great pass rush reps, then gets beat by simple pass rush moves. He has some great reps out on the move, then will whiff entirely. His high highs and low lows are concerning for a prospect who already will likely move to the interior.

Game:Takeaways:
29
USC (11/04/2023)Odd stance. Does not appear that flexible. Turned around completely on spin move. Clear hip tension seen on his kickstep. Lacks aggression out in space. Loses balance when extending. Hips extend too soon often. Good hooks on slant block. Getting drilled backwards by mediocre power rushers. Balance is a major concern. Hands are quick to reset after getting chopped. Again, balance is a major concern. Getting beat rather consistently in one on one situations with both speed and power. He lacks strength to anchor and the lateral quickness and balance to deal with speed. Really having an awful game pass blocking. Decently quick feet. Has movement skills and speed to learn and develop into a good gap blocker out in space. Passive hands waiting to react. Whiffed second level block. Excellent angle on goal line to get leverage and push. Good hand response to knock down his opponent's hand. Surprisingly great pivot footwork. A bit frantic when losing his balance at times.Balance issues are going to ruin his career if not addressed immediately. Could be both a backup guard and left tackle. 5th round grade.

Utah (11/11/2023)Quick feet, but lacks flexibility. Balance is still a concern, although not as much so linearly as it was in the USC game. Quick, strong, and precise hands pass blocking edge rushers trying to play into his chest. Great chest punches. Balance issues on the edge are hugely concerning. Handling stunts very well. Nice outside zone block. Handling Elliss's speed surprisingly well. Head drops too far forward on occasion. Great angles against power when no second move is performed. Needs to sit more into anchor though. Good outside zone positioning once again. Excellent gap block. Could afford to gain a bit of mass for the interior. Absolute night and day difference from the previous week.100% a guard prospect for the NFL, and could potentially even play center. Playing on the interior should mitigate many of his deficiencies. Late 2nd round grade; a vast improvement since USC.
31
Michigan (01/08/2023)Squares up blocker. Lacks flexibility. Good foot skills, but balance is still an issue. Excellent mirroring. Does not drive much in the run game. Incredible out in space. Arm speed is excellent. Block sustan is inconsistent. Prefers to bounce edge rushers rather than use grip to lock and stand them up. Beat easily by very mundane interior pass rush move. Excellent hand fighting, but, once again, no grip. Very twitchy for the position. Excellent positioning on zone. Not always the strongest anchor. May need to gain some weight if he plays as a guard. Appears to move more like an athletic center. Not creating gaps on inside zone. Balance has seemingly improved slightly, which was desperately needed.Best tape thus far, especially regarding balance and pass blocking. Moving up to a Mid-Late 2nd round guard.

Final Scouting Report:
34
Fautanu may have played as the left tackle for Washington, but he moves much more like a guard or even a center. His foot speed, hand quickness, and twitch give him great potential as a pulling guard, and his primary deficiencies stem from his balance on the outside. Counters beat him regularly and refined edge rushers know how to get around him at tackle. As a guard or center, he can still utilize his quickness in the run game while not needing to cover large amounts of ground when pass blocking. He does not have the sturdiest anchor, but his ceiling on the inside is limitless. If his coaches and trainers can tap into his natural twitch and athletic ability while refining his already solid upper body technique, then Fautanu could become a great NFL guard or center.

If teams need him to play tackle, he likely could do so when needed at a decent level. He improved steadily throughout the season and could thrive as a tackle in outside zone run schemes. Living out on the edge full time may be a challenge with how many pressures he tends to allow, but he is a player worth drafting in the second round to develop as an offensive lineman regardless of where he ends up playing.
