Illinois Learning Standards Crosswalk for School Counselors
2
Problem:It can sometimes be challenging to push into classrooms to deliver school counseling lessons. Teachers/administrators may not understand how school counselors can help students master competencies and school counselors may not have well-developed lesson plans aligned to standards or understand how to write clear lesson objectives.
3
Solution:This document is designed to assist school counselors to more easily align their own lessons with those of the core content area teachers. Within this document, school counselors will find the Illinois Learning Standards most related to school counseling content. These standards are categorized by grade band (K-2, 3-5, 6-8, 9-10, 11-12) and content area (i.e. math, science, etc.). A future and in-progress goal is to also align these learning standards with existing lesson plans and the ASCA Mindsets and Behaviors.

At a glance, you can select a standard and easily demonstrate to teachers/administrators which standards your lesson will support!
4
How to Get Started:1. Click the desired grade level tab at the bottom of this page.
2. Next, find the subject in which you are presenting your lesson.
3. Review standards and select 1-2 for your lesson plan.
4. Write clear, measurable objectives that will support students in mastering the selected standards.

EXAMPLE:
If you are pushing into a 7th grade math class to deliver a school counseling lesson, click the "6-8" tab, then scroll down to "Math." This allows you to create a lesson plan around a 7th grade math standard that the teacher already needs to ensure students master. The document also links the 7th grade math standard with one or more related Illinois SEL Standards. In this example, the school counselor could align the curriculum goal of making sense of problems and persevere in solving them" with the social emotional learning standard "1C. Demonstrate skills related to achieving personal and academic goals."
