At the in-person Feb. 15, 2024, membership meeting, Michelle Burton, Past President of DAE, spoke about her candidacy for Durham County Commission and Wendell Tabb, Durham Public Schools Retiree, spoke about his candidacy for DPS Board of Education; April 18, 2024, Zoom meeting: Rep. Marcia Morey, one of Durham's NC Representatives, gave an update on the NC General Assembly; September, 19, 2024, Zoom meeting: Rep. Zack Hawkins, one of Durham's NC Representatives, gave an update on the upcoming election and the General Assembly. At a Durham Democratic Women's fundraiser Feb. 18, 2024, Co-President Liz Conroy spoke to Sophia Chitlik, (newly elected NC representative who was running for office at the time) and spoke to Marcia Morey, NC Representative, about the issue of UNC and ECU prohibiting their health workers from joining NC Retirement. Rep Morey arranged for Liz to talk to NC Sen. Mike Woodard who was leading a committee of Democratic Senators investigating the issue. Liz shared the information with Colleen Lanier and Linda Gunter who learned about the Senate committee for the first time and then were able to follow up. Legislative Chair Eddie Davis contacted County Commissioner Wendy Jacobs to inform her that NC’s oldest living woman (age 114) lives in Durham. At a County Commissioner’s meeting Catherine Ferrell and Durham Retired School Personnel were recognized. This year for American Education Week Nov. 18-22, Co-President Liz Conroy sent an individual email (11/18) to every Durham Public Schools principal thanking them and their staffs for their work in educating and taking care of Durham's students; four DRSP members Annie Hill, Gail Taylor, Linda Strickland, and Diane Lamb presented treats to staff at five Durham Public Schools (and took pictures--see Durham's webpage: <https://sites.google.com/view/ncrspregion5/durham>); on Nov. 19, Diane Lamb, Linda Strickland, and Liz Conroy visited a Durham Association of Educators meeting and gave everyone treats, a thank you note, and the 10 Reasons hand-out with a membership form on the back; Co-President Linda Strickland presented a check of $100 donated by DRSP to Crayons to Calculators, the local organization which distributes free school supplies to DPS teachers.Liz Conroy helped run Durham Democrats' phone bank twice a week between February and November--first calling potential volunteers and later calling Democratic voters who were not consistent voters to give them voting info. and remind them to vote (total of 321.5 volunteer hrs.); Liz also did phone banking for County to County NC which helps elect pro education legislators to the NC General Assembly. Currently, she helps coordinate meetings of Durham County Senior Democrats. Annie Hill---worked at a poll to distribute Democratic endorsements during Early Voting. DRSP is careful to share information about candidates of both parties, but, since all of Durham's elected officials are Democrats and for the 2024 election all the NCAE endorsed Council of State candidates were Democrats, we shared some Democratic information and worked with some Democratic organizations. Our LCTs (Eddie Davis, Patrick Nalley, and Liz Conroy) contacted our legislators every time we were requested to do so. We specifically followed up with Rep. Marcia Morey and Sen. Mike Woodard about the issue of UNC and ECU employees being prohibited from joining the NC Retirement Plan. Member Diane Lamb has reported that she contacted legislators when calls-to-action went out.We know our 3 LCTs participated, and we have feedback from a few members. We know Diane Lamb and Linda Strickland contacted legislators. We invite Active members (Durham Association of Educators) to all our meetings through their Facebook page. We have arranged with the Durham Association of Educators for them to send our members their twice monthly email newsletter.Newsletter online, Newsletter mailed to non-email members, Phone Automation, Emails, LettersOur Legislative Chair Eddie Davis gives an up-to-date and informative Legislative Report at every meeting. We email a copy of his report to members. One of our Legislative Committee members Patrick Nalley sends additional emails with important information about political education issues. In April of 2024, the D-RSP legislative committee chairperson Eddie Davis was able to interact with Congresswoman Valerie Foushee, who had spoken at a past meeting, and her staff to solve a US Postal Service issue for 104-year-old NCRSP member and former NCAE President, Dr. John H. Lucas. Rep. Foushee’s office interceded and quickly solved the mail issue for Dr. Lucas. The office of the Congresswoman thanked D-RSP for the opportunity to serve a constituent.Elizabeth Conroy, Durham RSP Co-President
