Let’s Get Ethical! [Trying To] Do the Right Thing For Our Archives While Facing the Reality of Real World Pressures
50 minute panelThis was a session proposal idea I originally had back in 2019 driven by an ethical dilemma I was experiencing at the time. Now, in the pandemic age we are living in, I think this topic is even more necessary to discuss from the perspective of the ethical and moral rights that needed to happen (and sometimes didn't) with employers as the pandemic began in March 2020. Following the dashed line is the session proposal text as of 2019 (open to updating this to encompass the pandemic). -------How can we ensure we are following our ethical/moral compass in our jobs, especially if the ethical situation in question has you thinking “I should leave this job.”? With the relatively non-existent luxury in the archives field of leaving our current jobs, how can we effectively advocate within our institutions for doing the right thing? How can those in the archives profession prevent burnout and remain resilient in the face of ethical quandaries? What tools exist to help archives professionals when ethical quandaries occur, and can they be relied upon?
