"if you only read the books that everyone else is reading, you can only think what everyone else is thinking" — Haruki Marukami"Reading after a certain age diverts the mind too much from its creative pursuits. Any man who reads too much and uses his own brain too little falls into lazy habits of thinking" — Albert Einstein

Blood in the Water by Heather Ann ThompsonKent TolandThis book won the Pulitzer Prize in 2017. Thompson tells the story of the 1970s Attica prison uprising and the brutal putdown and cover-up orchestrated by the government that occurred with little scrutiny or investigation for decades, and shows how the prisoners were re-victimized time and time again by the justice system.

The Library Book by Susan OrleanKent Toland
The Los Angeles Public Library caught fire in the 1980s, damaging over a million books, and the author uses it as a jumping off point to explore lots of things: LA, the science of arson investigations, the life story of the prime suspect, etc., and ultimately writes a love letter to the public library. While not a life-changing book, it's a fun, quick read that weaves together a lot of different strands into one story.
