3 | Fires, Fogs, Winds | Article: Academic | Elizabeth Povinelli | 2017 | Columbia University | USA | My desire is on fire. Its velocity is exhilarating. Its direction is the wind. I am simultaneously racing in front of and away from it. I am it chasing me with its inhuman legs. I want it to catch me. But I understand the consequences if it does. So I keep running just in front, but not too far away from its encroaching reach. My desire and I are asymptotic; if it becomes mine, then I am on fire. I don’t know if this is a universal quality of desire, or if it is the specific condition of me. | Text from first reading group
4 | Weathering | Article: Academic | Astrida Neimanis and Jennifer Hamilton | 2018 | Feminist Review | USA | Weathering, however, insists that the need for a particular kind of relation with the more-than-human–environment must also stake a claim for a different kind of sociality and (interhuman) politics. Weathering is thus between the neo-liberal heroics of resilience and the victim politics of vulnerability; with its specific feminist, antiracist and decolonial intersectional attentiveness, it also recommits to the need for an analysis of structural and systemic violence as essential to thinking through life in a changing climate. Weathering enables us to talk about the ethics of exposure, necessarily in relation to the political economies of place. It recognises the need for shelter while remaining critically attentive to the politics of shelter, always textured by gender, race, class, accessibility, species and other embodied markers. Demonstrating responsibility to place, history, difference, justice and more-than-human earth others, weathering is a critical response concept and practice for our time.
5 | Antiblack Weather vs Black Microclimates with Christina Sharpe | Interview | Chrisina Sharpe | 2017 | The Funambulist | USA | https://thefunambulist.net/articles/32058 | As made explicit in the introduction, her concept of “The Weather” has been instrumental in the articulation of this issue’s editorial argument. It was therefore crucial for us to feature her words at the core of an issue dedicated to a simultaneously literal and metaphorical undersanding of “Toxic Atmospheres.”

The music was mostly inspired by my observations of blurred figures and landscapes through wet glass on rainy days.
