ABOUT THIS NC DATABASE
2
In March 2020, the Center on Reinventing Public Education (CRPE) released “District Responses to COVID-19,” (linked below) an online database tracking how some of the nation’s largest public school districts have shifted instruction, student support, and organizational operations in response to COVID-19 school closures. CRPE continues to update the database on a regular basis as district plans shift and evolve.

EdNC and researchers from Chapel Hill-based Public Impact have joined forces to create a North Carolina version of this database to provide a similar set of information for state leaders, district leaders, school leaders, and the public.

In alignment with CRPE’s national database, this North Carolina database outlines districts’ responses to COVID-19 according to a series of standard indicators, covering curriculum, instruction, progress monitoring, centralization, learning time, and technology. More information regarding each indicator and the guidelines for coding can be found in the "DEFINITIONS" tab of this database.

This database does not include all CRPE indicators, but it does include additional indicators specific to this project. Where applicable, the database differentiates between CRPE and non-CRPE-aligned indicators.

This database has three tabs:
-DEFINITIONS– Explanations of each indicator and CRPE’s coding guidance
-NC DISTRICT RESPONSE DATABASE – The dataset, which includes links to district response plans and our analyses of those plans
-SUMMARY: A data summary table outlining each indicator, how it has been coded across NC districts, and where there are data gaps

PROCESS FOR POPULATING THE DATABASE
5
This dataset is the second version of the database originally published on April 23rd, 2020.

To populate the database, researchers searched for districts' publicly posted plans via district and school websites and social media pages. As a follow-up to the initial research, EdNC sent a survey to NC school districts in an effort to fill in information gaps and gain on-the-ground context for district and school responses. For districts that did not complete the survey, researchers made outreach to districts via phone and email for additional information. Researchers then populated the database with available information.

Between April 23rd and June 4th, researchers updated the database with the most recent CRPE indicators and completed a second review of each districts' websites and social media pages in an effort to capture the most up-to-date information.

This is a preliminary review and is not exhaustive. We strive to provide information that is accurate, complete, and current, but we realize district plans are evolving. If you have direct knowledge of a school system’s distance learning plan or see information in our database that needs updating, please contact Molly Osborne at mosborne@ednc.org.
