Notes on the dataset: Data on shipments is provided by the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA)
[
https://www.russiafossiltracker.com/en] primarily retrieved from Marine Traffic [https://www.marinetraffic.com] and the
vessel tracker API & ship AIS database Datalasti
c [https://datalastic.com/].

The main information of each ship, such as its name, IMO identification number, type and year of construction, the
flag under which it travels, the management company (Ship/Commercial Manager), registered owner and safety
management company (ISM Manager) were scrape by Reporters United and Investigate Europe from the vessel
tracking service MarineTraffic and the shipping database Equ
asis [https://www.equasis.org/].

The tracking period of the voyages reported in this dataset is set between 24 February 2022 and 05 January 2023.

The ownership of a ship occurs from the 'ship_manager_equasis' column, not 'the registered_owner_equasis'. Accordingly,
the country of the ship owner occurs from the 'ship_manager_country_equasis'. The reason for doing this is that it is very rare
for the registered owner of a ship to correspond to the actual owner or manager of the ships. Historically, the shipping industry
has been applying the “single ship company rule”: Each ship is managed or operated by a parent company as part of its fleet;
but this same ship is registered in the name of a separate company (almost always registered in an off-shore haven) whose
only asset is this one particular ship. This is done to reduce as much as possible liabilities for the parent company.

Shipments in our analysis are categorised as either oil, gas or coal. Where this is not specified in CREA's dataset
relating to the commodity, we have excluded such trades in our analysis. However, given the difficulty in accessing
granular information on certain shipments, CREA's data also includes commodities listed as oil products and
oil/chemical products under its categorisation as well as crude oil and other types. At present, no additional detail on
the specifics of these shipments is provided by CREA.

The amount of the fuels transported in a shipment is based on the cargo capacity (deadweight tonnage or DWT)
of the ships as listed on Equasis and not on calculations or assumptions.

If you find any errors in our data sets, please let us know at reporters@reportersunited.gr / mail@investigate-europe.eu
