The Powder River Basin (PRB) is selected for study because it is representative of onshore geologic carbon storage (GCS) sites; it has a long history of fluid production including CO2, and contains a unique and comprehensive basin-wide subsurface dataset. The PhD resulting from this research has developed a model-building workflow for screening storage sites, which retains multi-scale geologic heterogeneity in basin-scale geomodels for accurately characterizing the connected pore-volume in subsurface reservoirs across a structural basin. Within the PRB, the five reservoir classes (RC) characterized for GCS include: 1. shallow-marine carbonate platform reservoirs (Madison Limestone), 2. mixed carbonate, evaporite, and coastal clastic reservoirs (Minnelusa/Tensleep Formation), 3. coastal to piedmont clastic valley-fill reservoirs (Muddy Sandstone), 4. fluvial-influenced clastic deltaic-turbidite reservoirs (Frontier Formation), 5. wave-influenced clastic delta reservoirs (Mesaverde Group). Fluid types within these reservoirs range from potable water, brine, corrosive gas, oil, condensate, CO2, and both biogenic and thermogenic gas. The suite of reservoir classes in this report represent approximately 40% of the 4 km of strata, which records over 300 m.y. of geologic time and is defined by 20 Paleozoic and Mesozoic geologic formations, therefore providing a GCS portfolio representative of continental structural basins. The fluvial-influenced delta RC selected for detailed geologic characterization has the most complete reservoir data, best outcrop constraint for establishing the sedimentary hierarchy, and show pore-volume changes that span the basin. The workflow, adapted from methods for building field-scale reservoir models, includes three main steps: 1) define a hierarchy of sedimentary attributes spanning four orders of magnitude in scale, 2) erect a minimum threefold stratigraphic framework for modulation of sedimentary attributes, and 3) temporal and spatial distribution of reservoir attributes based on stratigraphic and geomorphological constraints.
