304All PartsIt says "mit dem Bogen geschlagen", which the translation says is, "struck with the bow". Col legno, then? (Battuto?) (since it doesn't say with the wood of the bow, it could mean strike with the hair) I know it says gestrichen (stroked) later in the line. Two responses from two people who would know:

My 2-cents worth is yes, with the stick, but also some hair so there is a lot of noise/sound.

I heard a LOT of stick at this place in the music when they played it at Idyllwild this summer. That’s what I remember about the last time I played it, as well. I think stick with side of hair is more appropriate than stick through the hair. Essentially col legno. If you use a little horizontal motion with col legno, you get some pitch with the clack.

Bass #5There is the instruction “Mit dem Bogen geschlagen” which the translation says means “strike with the bow” and on the violin excerpts the same spot is marked as col legno. If this excerpt is selected for audition, are the judges going to expect basses to play col legno in this section? I have played this piece many times and don’t remember ever playing that col legno… some of my colleagues interpret it differently, as in a hard bow stroke… I would just like to be sure I am teaching it correctly, can you find out?Two responses from two people who would know: My 2-cents worth is yes, with the stick, but also some hair so there is a lot of noise/sound. 293Violin #4The part is divided. There are two notes in each line, but it says "geth."- divided. Just checking that it would be ok to play one of the notes rather than the double stop. (Thinking that it could be interpreted for the geth. to indicate the divisi, but each person plays a double stop)See revised excerpts.
