EU Animal Welfare Strategy Data


This document contains information on various factors that are likely relevant to designing a strategy for animal welfare reform in the European Union.

The first sheet "Hypothetical coalitions" describes the current status of support for a major animal welfare reform (Cage-free hens, Broiler stocking density, Fish welfare) and what countries might be promising to target corporate and/or political action in.

The sheet "Country stats" provides background information on statistics such as the number of animals in a given country, the % of people employed in agriculture, when that country next holds the rotating Presidency of the Council and more.

The subsequent sheets provide data such as all the EU scientific reports in animal welfare, timeline of EU presidencies, some descriptive statistics on the progress of the major animal welfare directives of the past, and data purchased from VoteWatch.eu on how often pairs of countries vote the same as eachother in the Council.


There is more data that has gone into the background research of our reports on the EU.
Data that has been excluded from this public document for reasons of confidentiality, sensitivity, or for the sake of clarity and space may be available upon request.
Examples of such data are:
Funding figures of the effective animal advoacy movement (likely can't disclose)
More simulations of voting on various animal welfare proposals
Models of past voting behaviour on the six EU directives covered
The trends in the % and N of cage-free hens in all EU countries as far back as 2003
Rough estimates of the market coverage of corporate cage-free pleges in each country for which we found data
Various data analysis that informed forecasts and models discussed in our full reports
