I’m not entirely sure. I was placed in guardianship as a newborn (as I’ve been told) in 1988. My adoption was officially finalized in 1999 when my birth mother relinquished her rights. I’ve recently learned a lot of things done between 1988 and 1999 were done illegally by my adopted parents, so I’m not to sure of exact years and circumstances before 1999.

I would love to share my story and learn of more ways to advocate for adoptees while I continue in my schooling and bring awareness to communities of the need for continuous mental health services and programs for adoptees. I am currently working with some colleagues in starting a mental health organization that is more inclusive and accessible than what is already in place. We are at the very beginning stages in this process and doing research and team building to finalize our proposals, secure funding, understand legalities, fine tune our vision and mission statements, and be prepared to be up and running by the end of 2023. I am also looking for resources to obtain my adoption record and find out the truth behind my adoption and what accountability can be held to my adopted father and his family with the damages they have caused and recent “dismissing me as part of the family” because I am not the biological child.

The pre-verbal trauma that adoptees who were adopted at birth is real and common. It can cause a lifetime of mental, emotional and physical health problems. This hardly ever talked about and it seems that most everyone refuses to believe this. Adoptees talking about their pain and trauma is dismissed by society. We’re expected to be grateful. Both my brother and I are adopted. We were always aware that we were adopted. Our adoptive parents did their best and we were lucky that our adoptive parents love us so much. While I was able to mentally navigate that I was adopted, and get my self to a "good place" with it all. My brother is the complete opposite. He has always felt out of place or like he didn't fit. So when he was able he went searching, and found out some not so great things about his birth parents and siblings, this caused his mental health to spiral, including suicide attempts and addiction problems.

When checking “LGBT adoption”, it needs to be stated that I don’t believe that adoption is a family building tool. most (including Heteronormative parents ) believe adoption the only way for it to be a way to have a child.and that needs to be addressed.i find Those spaces are often very aggressive to adoptees who say adoption isn’t the best solution for the wellbeing of the child because adoption is the one of the only ways they are able to be parents

I want to use a bunch of inappropriate language towards the notion that there is a solution to abortion and that adoption might be one of them.

The amount of mental and physical abuse that adopted children are subjected to is something that no one likes to talk about. The woman who adopted me at 3 yrs old spent the next 16 years telling me and showing me how much no one wanted me around or even alive. I still struggle with the PTSD at 38 yrs old.

I think it’s important to highlight that it can be traumatic for both the birth parents and the child when they have to give the child up for adoption.

I was adopted before birth through Catholic Social Services and it was open, though I learned later when I met my birth mother as an adult that she was forced by her family to place me for adoption. She wanted to keep me, but was coerced into adoption out of the families shame. Everyone talks about adoption as though it’s this amazing thing but no one bothers to understand what it’s like for the adoptee. I would say I have one of the less traumatic adoption stories as my adoption was celebrated and I was raised in a loving home. However, my adoptive mother has her own mental health issues that have never been addressed and, in addition to the trauma of being forcefully taken from my mother against her will, I also endured years of emotional abuse and chaos in my home growing up. I’m a therapist now myself and have been in therapy for the last decade working through my own trauma. I am grateful for my life but also have to live with the fact that I will never feel truly whole. I have many adopted friends and they feel the same. Adoption is not the amazing thing people think it is as it leaves the adoptee with an emptiness that can never be resolved, ever. Adoption should be a worst case scenario option only used in cases where it is impossible/not safe to keep a child with their mother or next of kin. It IS NOT an alternative to abortion and it enrages me how many people through it around so casually.
