With the passage of Assembly Bill (AB) 285 during the 82nd Legislative Session (2023), each public school is
22
required to collect quarterly data related to student discipline and the progressive discipline of pupils and onsite
23
review of disciplinary decisions. The metrics include:

The number of expulsions and suspensions of pupils
26
The number of vacant staff positions in the school
27
The average class size for each grade in the school
28
The implementation of each progressive discipline plan based on restorative justice
29
The training received by teachers and administrators regarding each progressive discipline plan based on restoravive justice

The number of placements of pupils in another school

The ratio of pupils to school counselors, school psychologists, and school social workers

The data must be aggregated by the types of offense and into the following subgroups:

Pupils who are economically disadvantaged

Pupils from major racial and ethnic groups

Pupils with disabilities

Pupils who are English learners

Pupils who are migratory children

Pupils in foster care

Pupils whose parent or guardian is a member of the armed forces of the united states, a reserve

These metrics must be collected quarterly for the 2025-26 school and reported to the following entities by

The Joint Interim Standing Committee on Education

The Superintendent of Public Instruction
