Mascot SuggestionsNotes11/5 Comments9/24 & 10/7 Comments
2
Aviatorshistorical context - there is a big navy/pilot community. originally naval housing. Clairemont Drive was an airport. There is a lot that can go on - synonyms. We have alot of animals on this list that don't fully connect to the community. If there was an animal that someone was into, we can combine it and have that be the mascot. There is variety in how it can be shown/designed. Spruce the Goose. Six other schools in the nation are the aviators. Usually a bird as the logo - non gender specific in the design. Doesn't have to be human. For the alma mater could work with the aviators. 4 syllables is alot. A mouthful for cheers. "Take Wing" could work as a phrase. Can't we abbreviate to "Avs" instead of Aviators. Airports have their logo/abbreviation code could be a cute sticker. Could be shortened to "Go birds" for cheers. Unanimous vote to move on 1948-1952, there was an airport (Clairemont drive was the runway). The terminals became the churchs down the street. Homes were built for military housing originally.

Bulldogsnickname concern?Ramona High and Oliver Pierce. A few other school.s 806 HS in the nation that use it. 56 colleges. 47 other schools in Califormia that use it already. Nickname concern that all the female teams are called "bitches". Have to watch out with professional teams - can be sued depending on how the logo looks/trademarking. Good Sports name, but not great for all students. Too strong of a sports assosication (Georgia Bulldogs). Trying to connect to the area/our community and no strong connection. What is CHS known for? we have a bit of everything - not alot of conflict with people and want something that brings us all together. 7 No and 3 yes/need more time. Bulldogs are Ramona High. Can be a fun mascot if someone has one. 3 Yes, 4 No, 2 Need more time, so stays for more discussion
4
Bulls/Toroshistorical connection to farm/ranch land. Works as mascot for sports teams. Unsure on overall population of the school. Farming culture - Hypermasculine view vs. Ferdinand the Bull. Bulls is very basketball. Toros could be a good connection with the Spanish past of the area. Reach back historically is cool, but needs a stronger connection with the kids today. As adults we can see the connection, but the kids don't always realize it and we don't want it to be as much of a stretch. Bulls is very masculine - girls teams would be the cows. Very Bring it On. Colors would work, tecolote canyon was cattle land from 1920s to the 1950s. All down Balboa. 3 Yes, 4 No, 2 Need more time, so stays for more discussion
5
C-lionsWhat would the mascot be? A lion or a sea lion. C lions is a litle cheesy - weird if you have to explain it. Would still be a "pride" thing like the old masot. C lions also seems like "C" list sort of thing. Could work with the ocean. A colony of Sea lions - a pride of lions. Drop the idea of C- lions and make it Sea Lion. Also feels elementary. Mascot suggestion - a Lion in Boardshorts/sea weed hair. Stays with a slight majority. One of the few animal that work with the area. PLNU is the Sealions - City Conference logo is a Lion. C-Lion is a play on words, but a little odd. If we are picking a mascot to last, doing something with a hyphen is weird. Could be the "liars".
6
Captainscaptains are close the Bucaneers (Mission Bay). Could be a sea lion in a captains hat. But the captains fight the bucaneers. Doesn't need to be a person/gender specific. Can be hard to market. Works well with Marston Mariners - Not as sports specific. There are captains in all sorts of activities. Inspiring and leadership. Something to aspire to in the future. Earn stripes to become a captains. Could work for the players creed. Think less about the picture and more about what it means. If we wanted a person as the logo, it could be a profile. Mascot could be a uniform, not a big costume, so it can be someone different every year. Works with the strength and honor of the Chieftains. A lateral move rather than a big shift. Stripes on helmet/uniforms as they earn different things. 7 yes 3 no/more time. Marston Mariners is our feeder. Keeps with the theme. Does it encompass the student body. Leader of a group, so keeps the same feeling as Chief. Doesn't have to be a face/man. Marston is an anchor. Can be made fun of with Captain Morgan.
7
Coastalswe are a mountain, not a coast. Hard to be an individual. Not a tangible thing. Surrounded by big/strong mascots and don't want it. Very elementary mascot. Very AYSO soccer team. mascot could be a wave or sunset kind of vibe. We have a view of the coast. But maybe not the exact mascot, but we like the idea of coast. Even split so moving to the next round.
8
CourageRepresented by an animal. North Carolina Soccer. It's an idea - not a mascot. Hard to be singular. Not personal enough. Senior would rather be the coastals than the courage. New professional teams are often moving way from human/animal mascot. Works well for teams. New era of mascots. Shift the courage idea up to sea lion. For the whole student body - not just teams. Could be hard to markey - what would a logo be? Just the word? Doable vs enjoyable. Would need to see it. Captain Courage like the idea of an element/not a physical thing. Women's soccer team on the east coast. Mascot is a big cat. Perfect 3rd vote, so will move on.
9
CrushCrush the turtle from Finding Nemo. Orange Crush soda. Same issues as the last two. Logo could be an orange. Seems more orange county. Could be an orange with hands that are crunching something. "We're crushing it". A few other schools have it. Seems very aggressive. See it as the water and waves. 2 yes, 4 no, 4 need more time. Remain for now.works with the C sound, which is nice (but not necessary). Works with the colors.
10
Currentsa wave - not a scary ripcurrent. Yes, we are on a mountain, but we are closer than more schools. Works with the ocean, question of what msacot would look like visually. Mascot could be Rip. A little more tangible than a "Crush". Ambiguous makes it hard.
11
GuardiansA good mascot, but doesn't fit wtih Clairemont. Space Force and Coast Guard. Good sports team name. Not much that can be done with it. very Cleveland. Kind of ambiguous so unknown on what it would look like.
12
Krakennickname concern?comes with cool visuals. Current lingo can have negative connotations, but will it still be a thing in the next generation. Student perspective - new slang today might make it hard to catch on. Actually the"Kray-ken". One professional sports team. Seattle Kraken. Doesn't embody the student body. Doesn't fully connct to different ideals that we want students to be reaching towards. Could keep in the top. Any school/mascot can be made to anything innapropriate. Something to fear not something to be uplifting or inspirational. 5 "I need more time" so it stays on the list. It is very scandenavian, which isn't our culture, could be connected to another indigenous group from a different part of the world. sexual connotation with "cracking". Crackheads or Crackers. nautical theme is cool. (There will be bad nicknames for everything) Works with Marston Mariners. We can claim it. (Stays on the list with an even split vote)
13
Lightningthunderbolts? High Tech High (Lightning, Thunder, and Storm) colors sort of work.
14
Mako Sharks/Sharkswest side story vibes. Stays on the list because of "need more time"
15
Manta RaysBay Park Elementary is the stingrays. Aquaman. No manta rays in SD.
16
Ospreybird and aircraft. Hunting bird. It's a Seahawk.
17
Raysduplicatecould also be sunrays, not just ocean.
18
Scorpionsall over the place. not as annoying as gophers. split vote, so it stays
19
Sunsworks for teams, but not for individuals.
20
Thunderbirdsupdated info = not approved by broader NA communityused a lot in Native American birds. Ties to the Clairemont Area and HS without fully staying. Also airplanes.
21
Tide/TidesRoll Tide.
22
TitansPoway Titans Eastlake
23
Wolverinesa few other schools, but not in our cluster. tied vote, but stays on for now.
24
random notesfor the alma mater, change the one line to "mighty assembled bravely". Could name the Captain "Captain Courage" to keep the Courage idea/teachable. Crush could be the name of the mascot. Charlie.
25
can be hard to imagine a mascot without an image sometimes.
26
legacy/legend - made a bird be the logo and keep the feather. "Legacy in motion" is the Yearbook name this year. Can current kids relate to it? Every graduating class thinks they are the class that everyone will remember.
27
Stay open to a new name. Don't fully have it yet.
