| Apple released yesterday a bundle of information for developers wanting to support its Apple Watch. In the process, they revealed a lot more information about the product and how it will work. | VIDEO: https://developer.apple.com/watchkit/
| Buster Hein writes for Cult of Mac. Q: Q: The Apple Watches come in two sizes, and we learned from the WatchKit that this involves two different screen resolutions. Is that going to be a pain for developers? Q: Can you talk about the different kinds of notifications? What are "Glances"? Q: How about the different kinds of layouts. What are Hierarchal and what are page based layouts? Q: Apple is trying to get developers to create apps, even though native apps won't be possible until next year sometime. Will the early work be wasted effort? Q: The new Apple Watch font is based ultimately on ransom notes? | Buster Hein Editor, Cult of Mac @bst3r
| A: Two different size watches will sport different screen resolutions, which developers have to deal with. A: Apple Watch will use a new font called "San Francisco" A: The WatchKit's "Watch Human Interface Guidelines" talk about the layout options for designing interfaces, and also how notifications work. A: Apple calls quickly viewable information "Glances," which are optional, read-only and non-scrollable -- in other words, an entire Glance must by definition fit on a single screen with no possibility of input by the user. A: Notifications come in two flavors: Short Look Notifications and Custom Long Look Notifications. A: Like Android Wear, Apple Watch apps are really part of the iPhone app that controls it. However, "native apps" that don't require a tethered iPhone are "coming next year."

| In other Apple news, A federal jury has ordered Apple to pay a Texas company called Mobile Telecommunications Technologies $23.6 million for infringing on five pager patents. | http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2014-11-18/apple-told-to-pay-23-6-million-over-pager-technology.html
| Joining us now by phone is Bloomberg patents reporter Susan Decker. Q: What would Apple be doing with pager-related patents? Q: What was Apple's defense? Q: Who else are they suing? | Susan Decker Patents reporter, Bloomberg @sudecker1
| A: A jury found that the Apple iPhone and other and other Apple devices used SkyTel pager technology from the 1990s in its WiFi-connecting products. A: Apple claims the patents covered technology that wasn't even innovative in the 90s, and that the lawsuit includes emojis and calendar invites. A: Mobile Telecommunications has files lawsuits also against Amazon, AT&T, Blackberry, Clearwire, Leap Wireless, LG, Sprint Nextel, HTC, ZTE, T-Mobile, Samsung, and United Parcel Service. Samsung is next in court on December 15.

| The TV metrics company Nielsen plans to start measuring Subscription Video On Demand viewership on Netflix, Amazon Prime and others starting next month, according to an exclusive by Keach Hagey and Suzanne Vranica in The Wall Street Journal. The companies don't want to disclose numbers, but Nielsen can figure it out anyway. This would be the first time shows like House Of Cards and Orange Is The New Black would be measured. | http://online.wsj.com/articles/nielsen-to-measure-netflix-viewing-1416357093 | http://www.nielsen.com/us/en/insights/reports.html
| Keach Hagey joins us now. Q: You wrote that the Netflixes and the Amazon Primes of the world don't want to reveal numbers. How is Nielsen planning to measure viewership? Q: You said Nielsen documents you saw also contain data suggesting that time spent on streaming services is cannibalizing traditional television viewing. How big is the effect? Q: How will Nielsen numbers affect the streaming sites' ability to negotiate for content with the content creators? Q: Media executives don't like the Nielsen numbers. Why is that? | Keach Hagey Media reporter, The Wall Street Journal @keachhagey
| A: Nielsen: subscribership to streaming video services has jumped to 40% of households in September, up from 34% in January A: After people sign up for streaming video services, they watch less TV than they used to, Nielsen found: 20% less, in the 18-34 demographic, and 19% less in 25-54. A: people who are video subscribers, on the whole, watch less TV than nonsubscribers: 20% less, among 18 to 49-year-olds.

Sites can earn a Google "mobile-friendly" badge if they don't require Adobe Flash, if text can be read without zooming in and that users don't have to scroll to see content and if links are far enough apart to enable tapping with a finger. comScore says more than one third of all time spend on the web is done on a mobile device. | https://developers.google.com/webmasters/mobile-sites/

I have been regularly listening to TNT and Security Now for the last years - shows are both entertaining and informative. You keep me company while driving in our hectic roads. I just listened to episode 1138: I Heart NY-WI-FI where a guest of yours commented on the Europeans' feelings towards Google. Living here, I must say that I do not see the picture he described. Most people here are happy to use Google, Chrome and Android phones. Keep up the good work!

| (UPDATES) | SHOW | ARTICLE
| The US Senate rejected the USA Freedom Act by a vote of 58-42. (It needed just two more votes to pass.) The bill would have ended mass metadata collection by the NSA and provided more oversight of the agency. It would have also required the NSA to get phone call data with a warrant, rather than having it all in their possession. One of the reasons it didn't pass is that it was "watered down" from the House version, so some proponents of limiting the NSA withdrew support because it was too lenient. The Patriot Act will expire in June, so new legislation will be required if the NSA is to be allowed to continue to hold on to phone records. * * * | http://www.c-span.org/video/?c4515407/senate-debate-usa-freedom-act

| Starbucks started offering wireless charging in 200 cafes yesterday. The chargers will be embedded into tables and bars. The rollout being conducted in partnership with AT&T. As with so many new things, shops in the San Francisco Bay Area will be first to get the chargers with other parts of the US to get them later. Starbucks will use the Power Matters Alliance standard, which is also supported by Google. * * * | https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=41FpaH-B2bs&feature=youtu.be | http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2014/11/18/att-and-starbucks-to-bring-wireless-phone-chargers-to-some-coffee-shops/
