|We've been telling you for months about growing restrictions on the Internet in China under President Xi Jinping. Now, US businesses are lobbying president Obama to pressure the Chinese government to reverse some of the restrictions.||http://www.reuters.com/article/2015/02/05/china-tech-security-idUSL1N0VF3H920150205|
|Krista Hughes is a Trade Correspondent for Reuters. |
Q: Who are these US business trade groups, and what are they asking from President Obama?
Q: Some of the Chinese restrictions are in retaliation of US accusations that China has engaged in widespread industrial espionage, and the theft of data from dozens of US organizations. China will demand that the US backs off in exchange for their own easing of restrictions. Is that a good solution?
Q: How much of a factor is the Snowden revelations in Chinese restrictions?
Q: Don't these restrictions hurt Chinese businesses even more than US ones?

|700,000 * That's the dollar value of Apple gift cards purchased in a fraud scheme by four former Apple employees and a dental office receptionist in New York and New Jersey, according to the Manhattan district attorney. |EMAIL: Jonathan Bennett sent us a note about our report yesterday that the South Korean government had rejected Uber's proposal for a new driver registration system that would have allowed Uber drivers to operate legally in South Korean. Instead, the government said they're going to ban Uber because they have too many taxis already. Here's what Jonathan said:|
|I've lived in Seoul for 5 years, so I feel like I can add a bit to the Uber conversation. The taxis in Seoul are pretty cheap, this is true. And they also say there are too many of them, but if you're out late, good luck getting a taxi. Even with call taxi services, you can wait 30-60 minutes for a taxi in some places (because they'll tell you there aren't any taxis available and to call back later). Also, if you live in an out-of-the-way part of Seoul where the driver is unlikely to get another fare, they used to tell you, "No." and drive off. That's illegal, but it happens (although they're enforcing that rule more strongly now so people do it less). I had several friends who used Uber as their primary way to get home after a long Friday night out on the town, not sure what they're going to do now. I live right down the street from one of the main nightlife areas so I always walked home, but taxis in Seoul can definitely be hit or miss at times if you need to get to the other side of town quickly.|
