I feel a slight amount of pressure but generally feel able to express differing views.Vasco GriloResearch associate (contractor)Alliance to Feed the Earth in DisastersI am a research associate at Alliance to Feed the Earth in Disasters (ALLFED (https://allfed.info/about)), for which I work as a contractor. I have publicly expressed views which do not conform to those of my organisation nor manager. My sense is that both ALLFED and my manager would have preferred it if I had not:
- Discussed potential downsides of decreasing starvation in "Future benefits of mitigating food shocks caused by abrupt sunlight reduction scenarios" (https://forum.effectivealtruism.org/posts/jBEyb8akFGzbADokR/future-benefits-of-mitigating-food-shocks-caused-by-abrupt) and "Increase in future potential due to mitigating food shocks caused by abrupt sunlight reduction scenarios" (https://forum.effectivealtruism.org/posts/SZZdYwYvkJjus2vGp/increase-in-future-potential-due-to-mitigating-food-shocks).
- Linkposted "Nuclear winter scepticism" by Bean (https://forum.effectivealtruism.org/posts/Ysq53coRwgSWHHz2x/nuclear-winter-scepticism).
- Commented on "Nuclear winter - Reviewing the evidence, the complexities, and my conclusions" by Michael Hinge (https://forum.effectivealtruism.org/posts/pbMfYGjBqrhmmmDSo/nuclear-winter-reviewing-the-evidence-the-complexities-and), who works for ALLFED. Note the views expressed in the post are his own, not those of ALLFED.
- Posted and commented on "Famine deaths due to the climatic effects of nuclear war" (https://forum.effectivealtruism.org/posts/gktZ8zuzyh7HEgjfc/famine-deaths-due-to-the-climatic-effects-of-nuclear-war).
- Commented on "Intermediate Report on Abrupt Sunlight Reduction Scenarios" by Stan Pinsent (https://forum.effectivealtruism.org/posts/JxakgiGiJ3egodfb3/intermediate-report-on-abrupt-sunlight-reduction-scenarios), researcher at the Centre for Exploratory Altruism Research (CEARCH (https://exploratory-altruism.org/)).
- Included this section in the present post.

I felt mild pressure to conform, and my guess is that the median monthly active user (https://www.investopedia.com/terms/m/monthly-active-user-mau.asp) of the EA Forum would not have done any of the above conditional on having my object-level views about nuclear winter, but their takes on transparency (https://forum.effectivealtruism.org/topics/transparency). However:
- I am glad there have been internal and public discussions about the above among people working at ALLFED.
- I still enjoy working for ALLFED, although I now think the cost-effectiveness of work to decrease famine deaths due to global catastrophic food failures is much lower relative to when I joined it.

When speaking publicly in an unofficial capacity, I must not do anything that would undermine the confidence of any politicians that I could give them impartial advice if I were to one day work for them. This was part of the up front conditions of my job.

That holds whether it is consistent with, or opposed to, the party line. I chose "extreme pressure" for that reason.

Research Associate
My job involves public service in a very deep red state. As such, I find it prudent to not publicly express philosophical ethical views when speaking to others; the sorts of ethical reasoning that I use to guide my decision-making leads me to conclusions that run against the (stated) preferences of the persons I serve. To avoid putting my organization under heavy scrutiny, I keep my mouth shut. Within my organization, I am mostly comfortable expressing milquetoast neoliberal views, but avoid getting too deeply into it to avoid conflict with my co-workers.

Low-ranking call-center operator
Big retail company
I feel extreme pressure to not speak about: sustainability (the need for absolute decoupling and not the relative decoupling that is celebrated), people talking way too loud in the office all day all the time, multitasking (it is required, expected and celebrated in the company). I clock in and clock out and don't really think about it much often though.

There is not really much one can due to change a big company when you are in the lowest power level and paying job.

EA allows me to change the world a little bit for the better.
I don't have the people skills or education to work in an EA organization so I try to do the best I can outside my work that pays the bills.
