3 basic types,
Heat detector
for the kitchen, doesn’t sound with burnt toast, goes off when a rapid rise in temperature is detected (best ones) or when 60 deg is detected.

Smoke alarms
Optical: Only sounds with visible smoke
and
Ionisation smoke alarm
Sounds with invisible smoke

Each detector should be mains powered, with battery back up and interconnected to the others, so that if one sounds, they all sound. That’s current Building regs.
Below are Amazon links to the above 3 basic types. You can find them cheaper and more expensive elsewhere. The link is for reference of the type. You can fit other makes, as long as they comply with above spec. This means you can’t fit a cheap battery only smoke alarm. So the location is determined by the original wiring, that is where the interconnect wire is and mains supply. Using the same make means replacement is easy.
Other detectors combine optical and ionisation - these are more responsive to different types of smoke
Carbon Monoxide detectors can be combined with heat detectors. These are now required in all rented properties and advised ion you have lodgers, but not law yet. Only needed if you have appliances that burn stuff eg gas boiler or wood stove
The ones we have in the CH are State of the Art, made by Nest. Each alarm detects all 4 of the above and detects rapidly rising heat. They are interlinked via WiFi and report any events to an app. Only Nicky is currently monitoring - more volunteers needed?? We should have more of them to go outside each flat - on the list.

Location of alarms should be one per bedroom, heat in kitchen and another in the hall. Each alarm has advice on location and positioning in the enclosed leaflet.
Great that the last remaining people are attending to this. I am not offering individual help atm, but others are.
They have a life of 10 years , so should be replaced after this period. Date stamp on detector. Nicky suggested we write the expiry date on the spreadsheet. The detectors slide off and don’t need an electrician to replace, some are very fiddly to slide, need a small screwdriver.
Here is the link to the spreadsheet to self report.
