38 | Physical Description | Background
39 | A slim-looking young woman, with light brown hair bordering on blonde and a fair-ish complexion. It doesn't take much to see where all that weight comes from - one of her arms is entirely mechanical, heavily built for a lifetime outside and away from the comfortable confines of a laboratory. Although her other arm still seems somewhat organic, the clearly visible actuators that replace her joints and the various muscle augment systems reveal that the flesh is far from unaided. Her rough, hard-wearing outfit is deliberately chosen to further reinforce the image that Maxie is far from your typical head-in-the-cloud-computing transhumanist, focusing more on protecting what organic tissue she has left than any kind of fashion. Her eyes and several parts of her waist are also obscured by several enigmatic devices, wired into her very flesh in a way that by all rights should be extremely uncomfortable, if not agonising - and yet, she seems entirely unbothered by it. The answer to this dilemma can be found by taking a closer look at that skin - see how it shifts, see how it seems to peak and stiffen in the wrong places? Nerve conditioning and dermal plates provided by Cephalon complete this marvel (or abomination, if you prefer), creating a woman engineered to survive the rigours of the journey ahead. | Background here

41 | Surely such a heavily engineered woman would barely be human. All logical conclusions point to an emotionless, souless shell that can only be called alive by the strictest of terms. But Maximillia Hengest is far more than a shell. Within her, burns a fire that refuses to go out no matter how much steel is laid upon it. For her, machines are not necessary, or even a blessing - they are who she is, what defines her as a person. Whereas most people would cling desperately to the organic roots of the soul, and decieve themselves into believing they were losing something by implanting themselves with cybernetics, Maxie understood the truth: That augmentation was never a loss, simply a replacement. The unsatisfactory flesh was replaced with satisfactory, upgradeable metal. What one was born was is utterly irrelevant, all that matters is the final result. After all, she reasons, if your soul is more at home in metal than tissue, have you not become enlightened, rather than diminished? Why should she stop feeling, and thinking, simply because her chemical makeup has changed? Not everyone sees this, of course, and Maxie knows better than to change their minds through any means other than persuasion and demonstration. All must walk their own path, for in a species as diverse and individualist as humanity, she can see no other path to the perfect future ahead. Furthermore, Maxie sees little difference between humans and Pokemon in regards to her outlook, all life being machines that serve diverse purposes. And if all life is ultimately an identical machine, a set of processes that can be altered without changing the whole, then surely what matters most is the shape you choose to be and the purpose you perform? | To completely transcend humanity and become a thinking, feeling machine. Pure logic is, paradoxically, illogical - humanity must remain humanity if the transformation has to have any meaning at all, and emotions are a key part of that. She also desires to create a fully self-aware AI, and scoffs at the idea that this will be a disaster. If it does go wrong, she reasons, it will be by the choice of the AI, as intelligence is intelligence no matter where it comes from and a sentient being must have the full freedom to walk its own path. |
