This programme will prepare you for postgraduate study in fields related to Business, Management or Law at the University of York or another Higher Education Institution in the UK. It offers you the opportunity to meet the requirements set in a Department's offer letter and thus embark on the postgraduate degree of your choice. You will become familiar with the demands of study in your target department, both in terms of the discipline itself and of broader language and study skills. You will gain confidence in, for example, taking part in class discussions and group projects, preparing assignments to university standards and using the wide range of digital resources York has to offer. The International Pathway College, as a university department, is ideally placed to enable students to participate in the wider academic and social environment of the campus. This may include, for example, engagement with Departmental activities and resources or taking part in campus community events. You will be supported in this process and your progress will be credited. In addition to the broad skills and concepts associated with Business and Management, a specific strand of Law related to these fields is offered. This will be of benefit not only to those hoping to enter the School of Law but to any student interested in the commercial sphere.

5.c. Explanation of the choice of Programme Learning Outcomes
Please explain your rationale for choosing these PLOs in a statement that can be used for students (such as in a student handbook). Please include brief reference to:
87
i) Why the PLOs are considered ambitious or stretching?
88
The PLOs are typical of programmes of this type. They aim to develop subject knowledge and understanding, subject-related skills and also more general transferable skills, including critical thinking, digital literacy and those related to research. They equip a student who has completed a first degree in their home country with academic and language skills to successfully gain entry to a Masters' degree at the University of York.
89
ii) The ways in which these outcomes are distinctive or particularly advantageous to the student:
90
They enable students to develop language and study skills while gaining a firmer grasp of their discipline area and a familiarity with the academic culture at York. The Pre-Masters offers students the opportunity to meet the requirements set in a Department's offer letter and thus embark on the postgraduate degree of their choice.
91
iii) Please detail how you would support students from diverse entry routes to transition into the programme? For example, disciplinary knowledge and conventions of the discipline, language skills, academic and writing skills, lab skills, academic integrity
92
A central objective of the programme is to familiarise international students from a variety of backgrounds with the conventions and culture of university study in the UK. Students will have opportunities to engage with their target departments and the wider campus community and reflect on their experiences in an assessed portfolio.
93
iv) Please explain how the design of the programme enables students to progress through to the end of the award? For example, in terms of the development of research skills, enabling students to complete an independent study module, developing competence and confidence in practical skills/ professional skills, (See: QAA Mater's degree characteristics http://www.qaa.ac.uk/publications/information-and-guidance/publication?PubID=2977#.WS1JOevyu70).
94
Students, for example, are given scaffolded support over two terms to produce a research report on a topic of their choice relevant to their discipline of study.
95
v) How the programme learning outcomes develop students’ digital literacy and use technology-enhanced learning to achieve the discipline and pedagogic goals which support active student learning through peer/tutor interaction, collaboration and formative (self) assessment opportunities (reference could be made to such as blogging, flipped classrooms, response 'clickers' in lectures, simulations, etc).
96
Technology Enhanced Learning is integral to the programme and students will learn to use a range of digital tools to conduct individual and collaborative tasks. E-learning, both in the classroom, using the opportunities smartboards offer and, more remotely, through, for example, the VLE, is a routine part of educational engagement. More widely, the programme will equip students with media skills (eg. the use of video) and literacy.
97
vi) How the PLOs support and enhance the students’ employability (for example, opportunities for students to apply their learning in a real world setting)?
The programme's employability objectives should be informed by the University's Employability Strategy:
98
http://www.york.ac.uk/about/departments/support-and-admin/careers/staff/
99
This is not strictly relevant to a preparatory programme of this kind. However, the focus is on vocational disciplines and, where possible, theoretical concepts are applied in practical case studies and students are actively encouraged to acquire employability skills through, for example, volunteering.
100
vii) Consultation with Careers
The programme proposal should be discussed with Careers. Please contact your Faculty Employability Manager.
Please provide details of Careers' comments and your response.
