Open hole flutes are recommended for better intonation. Beginner students can purchase "plugs" to put in the holes so they function like closed-hole flutes when they're beginners. When searching for a step-up flute, pros tend to lean toward "in line G" versus offset G. Students need a cleaning rod/cloth.

You will need to get a trombone with an F attachment and large bore eventually, so many suggest to go ahead and make this investment from the beginning so they are set to go! I say definitely, if you can. Students need valve oil/slide grease.
