Salmon Bowl2/1/2020OutreachOcean sciencesOSU CampusHigh school students
The National Oceanic Sciences Bowl (NOSB) is a nationally recognized and highly acclaimed high school academic marine sciences competition. Schools form teams of 4-5 students to compete in a quiz-bowl to win great prizes, scholarships, and a chance to compete at the national competition. OSU hosts the Salmon Bowl, Oregon’s regional NOSB. Each year, over 150 students, teachers, and community members volunteer to help enrich science teaching and learning. Together, we enhance public understanding and stewardship of the oceans while promoting student exposure to STEM.

Campus field trips; OSU Precollege Programs
OngoingRecruitmentAll OSU programsOSU CampusHigh school
OSU Campus Field Trips are designed for students to enhance curriculum, experience campus life, and encourage college as a plan. The Office of Precollege Programs annually hosts over 6,000 students (generally in grades 5-8), teachers and parents for a day on campus intended to encourage underrepresented and minority groups to go to college. For many students, this is their first time on a college campus and presents a pivotal engagement opportunity. Groups spend between 2-4 hours at OSU: touring campus, eating lunch in a dining hall, visiting a cultural center and/or an athletic facility, and participating in an activity presented by a faculty member, staff, or student. These presentations are designed to enhance school curriculum as well as expose students to potential majors or careers, often in STEM fields. Opportunities for researchers include providing engaging 45 minute presentation and activities for school groups twice a term

Beaver HangoutsOngoingRecruitmentAll OSU programsVirtualMiddle school?
Beaver Hangouts online mentoring program: Oregon, especially rural Oregon, is facing a crisis in college access and success. Research has shown that college student mentors have a strong impact on younger students’ aspirational goal of attaining post-secondary education. However, transportation time and costs are barriers to getting college students to rural settings. In 2012, Oregon State University Precollege Programs came up with the idea to connect OSU college student mentors to economically disadvantaged and underserved K-12 classrooms, using the videoconferencing software Skype. The college students would meet with their classrooms twice a month for one hour, and provide college-themed programming. It proved to be highly effective for both the students and the college mentors. Opportunities for researchers include developing 45 minute presentations and activities for STEM focused partners such as afterschool clubs, robotics, clubs, etc

Skype a scientist gives you the opportunity to connect with students around the world without having to leave your lab! We match scientists with k-12 classrooms, and once matched, you will video chat into the classroom for a 30-60 minute session (you don’t have to use skype). We want to put a friendly face to science and lower the intimidation factor that surrounds science for some students. Opportunities for researchers: 30-60 minute video lesson in a K-12 classroom.
