Joseph AllenEnvironmental StudiesDr. Allen concentrates his practice on exposure science, environmental epidemiology, and statistical analysis and interpretation of environmental and occupational data. He has directed community and occupational exposure and risk investigations related to a broad range of chemical, biological, physical and radiological stressors. These include both measurement- and model-based investigations related to: carcinogens, endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs), hazardous materials, sick-buildings, air pollution, biomarkers, emissions from consumer products, infectious disease outbreaks, and exposures on airplanes. He regularly publishes peer-reviewed literature and is a frequent speaker at academic conferences. Dr. Allen holds two academic appointments – Lecturer of Environmental Studies at Brandeis University and Research Associate at the Harvard School of Public Health.http://www.brandeis.edu/facultyguide/person.html?emplid=3759a2ab6dc553a4ec80c4e49d5ec54da96945fcAllen JG, Macintosh DL, Saltzman LE, Baker BJ, Matheson JM, Recht JR, Minegishi T, Fragala MA, Myatt TA, Spengler JD, Stewart JH, McCarthy JF. Elizabeth FerryAssociate Professor of AnthropologyMy interests lie in Mexico and U.S.-Mexican relations, and in silver mining, with special focus on theoretical concepts of patrimony and the production of value. My current book project looks at the extraction, circulation and consumption of mineral specimens from Mexican mines, by miners, dealers, collectors, curators and mineralogists, to see how these transactions manifest and influence the experience of transnational space.
This project addresses questions of great interest in the fields of popular culture, migration, and politics, but from a fresh perspective.

In the future, I plan to research the recently enhanced activities of Canadian mining companies in Mexico, focusing on several localiteis. I am especially interested in the role of NGOs and Corporate Social Responsibility projects in these places, and their understanding of longstanding debates within Mexican mining localities over the proper role of corporations in society.

Laura J GoldinEnvironmental Studies: Environmental Law,Environmental Justice, Environmental Health; American Studies; Health: Science, Society, and Policy; Social Justice and Social Policy; Chair of the Environmental Studies ProgramProfessor Goldin's courses have helped lead the way in developing hands-on experiential learning that engages students directly with local communities. Her students have worked with community organizations and local residents to minimize toxic exposures in low income housing, assess toxic exposures to immigrant nail salon workers, create community gardens with residents of the local public housing complex and educational gardens at the public schools with k-12 children and teachers schools, and other projects and research to promote Brandeis and community environmental health, social justice, sustainability and open space preservation. In Ms. Goldin’s “Greening the Ivory Tower” course, students design and implementsustainability projects that create long-term improvement to the campus and community environment. Her work has addressed a broad spectrum of environmental issues, from hazardous waste and air and water pollution to occupational health and safety, toxic exposure, and land use regulation. She has argued precedent-setting environmental case law, and has helped to craft a number of emerging environmental protection laws and regulations.http://www.brandeis.edu/facultyguide/person.html?emplid=ce45db16363ab0535939d140f30d97563c4a7c59Goldin, Laura J. Eric Olson Heller School for Social Policy and Management Professor Olson can effectively teach these topics: mechanisms accounting for global atmospheric circulation and climate; the key factors accounting for Earth's accelerating climate change; the sources and maintenance of soil fertility; the pathways of nitrogen through atmosphere, soils, and waterways; the impacts of large power dams and irrigation schemes on river channels and floodplains; the causes and consequences of "dead zones" off the world's coastlines; the impacts of invasive species on natural and agricultural systems; how insularity and small population size affect genetic diversity and risk of extinction over time; and research on the concept of 'keystone species' with a particular focus on the dramatic case study of wolf reintroduction into Yellowstone National Park. I have maintained a research focus on natural enemy, herbivorous insect, and host plant interactions. My most recent research in this area has taken place in the tropical dry forests of northwestern Costa Rica.http://www.brandeis.edu/facultyguide/person.html?emplid=9fc36679ee7680176b8ea3a18f37aeac424651f0

Jeffrey ProttasProfessor,
The Heller School for Social Policy and Management
Dr. Prottas has specialized in research on organizational behavior and change, especially in service delivery programs. Taking an implementation viewpoint, his work has focused on how organizations adapt to changes in their organizational and technical environments. This research has been concentrated in the health care field and has been concerned with program and policy evaluation and the impact of organizational and political factors in the implementation of public policy. Methodologically his research has depended on a combination of qualitative and quantitative techniques, including case studies and survey methodologies. During the last several years Dr. Prottas has extended his work into the community's role in policy development and implementation.http://www.brandeis.edu/facultyguide/person.html?emplid=f3c72521e4bcc64386a861ee5472b60bdbf5fc36Gurewich, D., Sirkin J.,Prottas, Jeffrey.
