Mount Alexander Shire Council11/4/2018Tiny house movement becoming a bigger playerhttps://www.thefifthestate.com.au/innovation/residential-2/tiny-house-movement-becoming-a-bigger-playerTiny houses can be on wheels or not. On wheels, they are generally classified as caravans, but, for example in Victoria, it is illegal to live in a caravan for more than six weeks. In NSW, a court win against Camden Council in early April has reportedly paved the way for “mobile structures” in backyards by upholding a Sydney family’s right to put a small holiday cabin on wheels (which could be classified as a caravan) on their land without development consent.

Kalamunda City Council16/4/2018The WINNER of the 2018 LO-GO Appointments/LG Professionals Scholarship is 🙌Stephanie Brokenshire🙌who is a Statutory Planning Officer at the City of Kalamunda.https://www.linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:li:activity:6391521914577252352/Stephanie will travel to the US and Canada to visit local governments who have embraced Tiny Houses on Wheels (THOW) as part of their planning system and return to Perth to develop a scheme amendment and local planning policy for the City of Kalamunda. Plans are in place to begin pre-consultation in early 2018 along with a tiny house expo prior to submitting to Council for endorsement. The City of Kalamunda would be the first local government in WA (perhaps even Australia) to consider including THOW as a separate housing typology. This would pioneer an alternative affordable housing movement and set a precedence for other local governments to follow suit. As a planning officer Stephanie is keenly aware of the underutilised opportunities this movement offers and would be grateful if given the opportunity to expand expertise in this area and contribute to planning reform in Western Australia
