3/19/2014 2:27:21GyulaCsapóFull Professor, Compostion and Music Theory, Department of MusicI find that amateurism and the basest considerations lie behind TranformUS and similar processes. Education, especially in those areas of our excellence which are blatantly disregarded, is more important than ever, such as in basic scientific research and the fine arts - not the "popular" but the substantial! The West is already paying a high price for its lack of understanding of the human side of world processes, cultures, history. Global disaster awaits us unless we change course by reinstating universities to their progressive, universal function – so that their faculty and students can lead the change, but in the opposite direction from the corporate "culture" TransformUS is trying to dictate.

3/21/2014 9:01:55AnthonyNickelStudent I completely endorse this letter. Since coming to this university in 2010, I have witnessed the dismissal of a majority of the support facaulty in my department (history) while also seeing a consistant rise in tuition. So now my department is completely lacking in staff and I pay more for it? How is this fair? I also worry about how seriously my degree will be taken from a university with a diminishing program

3/21/2014 10:00:54VaryaVinogradovacurrent Fine Arts umdergraduate studentThe way things are going at University I am starting to wonder if I am in the wrong school. I am paying way too much, and not getting anything out of it and soon to be getting less and less but still paying ridiculous amts of money since arts are getting butchered and there is no one to consult with or ask for help concerning art classes or which classes to take(positions cut). The Art Dept does not have a secretary or enough faculty or even their own building and recently Kenderdine Campus was shut down. The Kenderdine campus was world famous and attracted artists from around the world. Also the Arts and Sciences building and Fine Arts dept is always filthy since they do not get first dibs with cleaners. Commerce is always clean as is Agriculture. My mom works in the hospital, and since the cuts, even the surgery wards are dirty. Surgery wards. Why is the Uof S cutting such essential programs that are good for culture - and Saskatoon is growing and requires more culture like art and music - while University is cutting the head off the Arts. Why is the Univesity Hospital filthy? Why are there no secretaries and support staff? Why is the President citing austerity but is having new, unnecessary buildings built on campus and has not herself accepted a huge wage reduction? Someone is stealing money. Let The President and her highest paid thieving cronies accept pay cuts to help the institution they are supposed to serve.

3/22/2014 23:07:05TerryMathesonProfessor Emeritus, EnglishI concur completely with the opinions expressed by the students, and endorse their position wholeheartedly.

I am appalled by the virtually total absence, by the members of the English Department, of any critical response to the TransformUS process now underway. With the exception of Len Findlay's recent motion, absolutely no one from the Department has publicly uttered a single syllable of outrage.

As Thomas More said in "A Man For All Seasons", silence implies consent. This silence I cannot fathom when it is plain that the administration is obviously trying to turn the English Department into a largely service department whose function will soon consist largely, if not ultimately exclusively, of teaching budding technocrats how to read and write business documents.
