Development and application of automated microsystems using graphene modified nanomembranes for determination of arsenic and fluoride. implementation of environmental quality indices and spatial-temporal analysis in the water of the colorado river. Access to safe drinking water is crucial for healthy human life. Numerous publications analyze the origin of Arsenic and Fluoride, their behavior and distribution in groundwater, and also their biological, physical and chemical interactions with other anthropogenic compounds. Elevated concentration of naturally occurring fluoride (F-) and arsenic (As) in drinking water is a worldwide problem. Many Asian and Latin American countries have reported concentrations of either F- or As often exceeding the World Health Organization (WHO) guideline values of 1.5 mg /L and 10 μg / L, respectively. Unfortunately, every method has its own advantages and disadvantages, with the more sensitive techniques requiring complicated sample preparation involving extraction steps to concentrate the sample and/or eliminate the effects of the sample matrices. Among the existing analytical methods for automation, the FlowBatch (FB) Systems have experienced a rapid development since their creation by Honorato and Araujo in 1998, currently encompassing almost every analytical field. These systems combine the features of the analyzers in flow, discrete or batch and programmable multi-commutation principles for the control of the entire analytical process. This project is aimed at developing analytical methods with different automation degrees, using graphene modified nanomembranes for determination of arsenic and fluoride in the Colorado river. The experimental variables will be selected using experimental design, and multivariate studies will be performed to obtain information about the distribution, transport mechanism, fate and effects of the analytes. It is noted that one of the most important characteristics of the research group is its interdisciplinary composition, which enables the generation and application of new knowledge in the studied field. Also, the obtained results will be published in the official bulletins of the AIC (Autoridad Interjurisdiccional de las Cuencas) and COIRCO (Comité Interjurisdiccional del Rio Colorado). Visual Studio Code has revolutionized the way IDEs and the language support within them is created. When using the Language Server Protocol there is one server that has all the language smarts, while multiple clients (VS Code, vim, Eclipse …) can query it to provide language features such as formatting, find references, diagnostics, navigation … Sigasi Studio is a “classical” IDE focused on VHDL and (System)Verilog users. The smarts and the language features are designed for one platform only: Eclipse. In particular, many graphical representations, used to visualize the internal structure of a chip-design, are coded specifically for Eclipse. With the advent of VS code, this needs to change. In this internship you will develop new protocol extensions for LSP that are able to transfer graphical information from the LSP server to VS code. As our VS code client plugin is still in the early stages, you’ll also have the chance to work on its polish; instant gratification all over! You will join the core engineering team of Sigasi and participate in the day-to-day development. You’ll join the scrum team, your code will go through the standard review cycle and will eventually have a real impact on our product. This internship takes place in 2021, at the Sigasi office, close to the city center of Ghent. For more information about this internship proposal, contact careers@sigasi.com.

Monitoring System and Telemetry of Freight Vehicles for Transport Planning Some crucial aspects regarding vehicle fleet management are: (i) how many vehicles are needed to perform the demanded transportation; (ii) the most adequate vehicles concerning its size and operational characteristics; (iii) the cost of acquiring and maintaining the fleet throughout the respective life cycle, among other factors. Accurate data is necessary to perform proper planning and assessment of freight transport, including the location of the distribution centers, retailers and consumers; traffic impedance; and time information (weekdays and times preferred to perform deliveries). This project was conceived to propose a basic system for monitoring freight flows and perform telemetry to generate data that can help the aforementioned assessments. This basic system should be able to provide information of (i) day and time of each delivery; (ii) GPS data of the trip and respective deliveries; (iii) the total weight and size of the packages delivered; (iv) the transit time between sequential delivery points; and (v) the characteristics of the facility or building where the delivery was made. The student will work with microcontrollers (Arduino) and/or microcomputers (Raspberry Pi) and will implement one monitoring process at a time, always testing the reliability of the system. The first tests will be performed using wifi modules and the last ones using GPS modules. The student will also produce a GUI (Graphical User Interface) for the user/administrators of the system, which will gather disaggregated and interactive information in a dashboard. This GUI will be enhanced step-by-step with the progress of the information gathering steps of the methodological approach proposed.

The main goal of the project is to investigate chaotic diffusion along the phase space of a set of area preserving mappings whose angles diverge in the limit of vanishingly action. The dynamics of the model to be considered is described by a two dimensional area preserving nonlinear mapping in two variables: angle and action. Chaotic seas are observed in the dynamics and the project shall consider and describe by using the analytic solution of the diffusion equation the diffusion of chaotic trajectories in the phase space. Numerical simulations will be made to compare the results with the analytic findings.

Detection of different contaminants as heavy metals or nanoparticles in plants by laser spectroscopy. The method we investigate here is called laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS). This internship focuses on studying the effect of various nanoparticles (such as quantum dots, upconversion nanoparticles) on plants. You would be evaluating their toxicity and bioaccumulation. You would take care of the samples from the beginning to the end: the exposure, sample preparation, measurement by LIBS set-up and data evaluation. You will also conduct some literature reviews focused on the studied topic. We will teach you how to use our LIBS set-up and evaluate the data and then you will be conducting the research on your own and report your progress on our weekly team meetings. The outcome of your work will be preparation of a report summary and subsequent presentation for our LIBS team.

The soft drinks sector is one of the fastest-growing, most innovative, and rapidly changing areas of the food and drink industry. All soft drinks have their microbiological issues. Bacteria that has been associated with spoilage in the soft drinks industry include Acetobacter, Alicyclobacillus, Bacillus, Clostridium, Gluconobacter, Lactobacillus, Leuconostoc, Saccharobacter, Zymobacter and Zymomonas. Gluconobacter is a common agent of fruits. Soft drinks are largely produced as acidic beverages (pH 2.5–4.0) and consumed worldwide (Azeredo et al., 2016). Classification of soft drinks can be carried out in several ways. However, soft drinks can be generally defined as nonalcoholic drinks that combine a balance of acidity and sweetness with flavor and color. Intern is expected to examine the microbial diversity of soft drinks on the basis of following different parameters- 1. Isolation 2. Physicochemical 3. Biochemical Characterization 4. Screening will be done for their suitable industrially important enzyme production.

The project is about the role of metal nanoparticles in catalysis. The effect of the size and shape of metal nanoparticles is also being taken as part of the project. Since the catalytic reactions occur only on the surface of the metal nanoparticles, the small size can provide a large ratio of surface atoms, which results in the high catalytic activity per unit amount of metal. There are many reports showing the size effect of metal nanoparticles on the catalytic activity. The intern is expected to work on the following: 1. The Intern has to synthesize metal nanoparticles using various well-known methods in the literature and stabilized by using a polymer as scaffolds. 2. The intern has to observe and study the catalytic activity of metal nanoparticles in both homogeneous and heterogeneous medium. 3. The effect of the size and shape of metal nanoparticles is also being taken as part of the project. If the intern wishes to work from home: 1. The intern needs to devote at least 5 hours per day to develop tasks. 2. Weekly meetings will be set up to follow up on the work's progress using suitable online platforms. 3. The intern shall be provided with the existing resources. 4. Due to the time zone difference, the intern is expected to be flexible with meeting timings.

Inconel 825, which belongs to the nickel-based family, has much application in the aerospace industry, missile, nuclear sector, marine propulsion, and petrochemical, which have high corrosion resistance. However, machining of this alloy at high speed faces a lot of problems due to poor thermal conductivity, higher strain hardening tendency, and high dynamic shear strength. These, in turn, produce toughened chips with high temperatures which induces tool wear, vibration, chatter and causes surface damage extending to the sub-surface level. In this project, the intern will work on reducing the surface damage and vibration, and to improve the machinability using the automated lathe. The machining of Inconel 825 will be performed at different cutting speed conditions (Speed, feed, and depth of cut) and lubricated conditions. Each machining input cutting condition will be compared with the numerical simulation study utilizing Ansys or Abaqus licensed version simulation process by providing the material conditions and machining conditions. The detailed tool wear study will also be carried out for both the experimental and simulated conditions. How do we plan to work with you? (If the intern chooses to work from home) 1. We need you to be able to devote at least 5 hours per day. 2. We will set up weekly online meetings to follow up on the progress work. 3. After the successful completion of the above-mentioned tasks, excellent works will be considered for publication. As they may exist time zone differences, we expect you will be flexible regarding team meetings.

Modeling and comparative analysis of drug dissolution profiles from cross-linked gel matrices Drug delivery has undergone tremendous advancement in the past few years. With the advent of a novel delivery system, drug molecules have demonstrated improved therapeutic and commercial benefits. Gels especially 'hydrogel' have immense potential to be used as sustained release formulations because of their unique characteristics. Gels are responsive to various stimuli. Crosslinking biopolymer-based gel can modulate the matrix characteristics, which in turn is an important factor for the pharmacokinetics behavior of the gel matrix. The quantitative analysis of the dissolution test is easier to comprehend using a mathematical model that expresses the dissolution results as a function of some dosage form characteristic. Outcomes of the Project: 1. Mathematical modeling to comprehend the dissolution results. 2. Comparative analysis of release pattern through various gel matrices. Expected Results: Drug release profiles and curve fitting of various mathematical modeling. Work Plan: 1) The intern is expected to work at least 5 hrs daily. 2)The intern is required to give weekly work updates over any suitable online platform.
