Spot brush work (10') in vicinity of log cuts.
- Swan Loop TR 5300-071 is in dire need of corridor restoration (brush out) particularly in its northeast half.
- PNT waymarkers are missing; it could use waymarkers at the trailhead located just beyond the Group Campsite gateway, and at the junction with Ferry Loop TR 5300-080.
- Waymark arrow on the sign located at junction of TRs 080x071 is incorrect; points north (straight) for both trails, but Swan Loop TR 071 needs to be indicated as a left turn.
- Need to formally resolve PNT connectivity (approx. 300') between TR 5300-071, and TR 5314-640

- Log out incomplete in the final 1.1 miles to Clackamas Mountain (and beyond to 312a)
- Use future log out to add sinuosity to former road portion of trail; motorized intrusion (dirt bike?) is occuring from the end of the old road bed, causing a rut in the tread

- Need to resolve trailhead relocation/reroute to circumvent deeply cut ravine that obliterated a section of the original trail
- Very urgent need to restore corridor to spec— excessively thick brush crowding out narrow tread in some places
- Increasingly urgent need to restore tread to spec— excessively narrow, cupped, eroded or muddy tread in places

Restored 2500 feet of tread to TMO spec (restoring width, outslope, drainage), working down from the primary switch/climbing turn at approx. mi-1.5
Implemented an interim solution for wet spot at roughly mi-1.3: Dug a gutter to redirect seep water alongside then across/off the ttrail; armored mudded tread with stones alongside seep.
- Moderate to substantial need to restore tread to spec from top to bottom; need for corridor restoration (limbing, brush) within first mile.
- Increasingly urgent need to repair/restore tread damaged by rockslides and runoff from Duff Spring, at approx. mi-0.6
- Great need for turnpike(s), tread work and runoff management where USFS realigned trail to approach a new puncheon trail bridge. At this time— while the last of the snow was melting— the ground was too wet to address these soggy problems areas.
- Puncheon bridge (near top junction, approx. mi-2.5) is incomplete: Turnpike ramps need to be anchored and filled.
- Watch Out: Not sure how long the interim puncheon bridge will hold up... The replacement bridge has a short span resting on large rock mudsills. The streambed is deeply incised at the crossing site; a major snowfall & meltdown event could wash the sill rocks and bridge downstream.

Roughly 500 feet of trail was new construction around new parking lot done by contractor. Trail was severely insloped causing water to flow from top to bottom on very steep slope causing channelization within weeks of completion, very rutted, large bumps, and generally a bad user experience. Volunteers outsloped, installed drains, and smoothed out trail.

Restored corridor w/ intensive brush out, working 0.22-mi up from junction with East Deerk Ck TR 6100-450 (PNT).
Protection projects:
- Constructed (1) 27' turnpike w/ 30' of armored ditching on the upslope to protect drainage
- Constructed (1) 25' turnpike w/ 40' of armored ditching on upslope, directing drainage to a repurposed culvert (culvert salvaged from an blown out drain on the former road bed).
More turnpikes are needed intermittently along this trail to manage drainage; 150–350' total.
Monitor effectiveness of new turnpike/culvert. Immediately adjacent to this new structure, the entire road bench is destroyed and slumping down slope. The culvert and new turnpike may fix that problem... TBD.

6/22/20246/22/2024Sherman 012Top 0.2 mi, from Kettle Crest down to first switchback below it.0.2Initiated deferred maintenance: Trail Eyes 101 Volunteer Work Party
Initiated annual maintenance (log out) of smaller diameter trees, and the crown of a tree at the junction that was obstructing both Sherman TR 012 and Kettle Crest TR 013.
Cleared branches and debris from fallen logs to ease passage until log out, and prevent users from creeping the trail around obstacles.
Initiated tread restoration of top 0.14 mi— resetting width and outslope, and removing berms that obstructed drainiage.
Lopped saplings and branches encroaching on corridor in the top 0.2 mi (to first switchback below the top).
Annual Maintenance: Approx. 6–12 logs are still obstructing or hung over the trail.
Sherman Trail is an excellent training ground for providing volunteers with treadwork training; most of the trail is in need minor-to-serious need of deferred maintenance to restore tread width, outslope and drainiage. There is also varying degress of need to maintain and restore the corridor specs where brush, overhanging branches and saplings are encroaching.
The switchbacks need their insloped drain structures restored.
There is a very minor low spot (6') that is muddy and could use a wee turnpike to prevent creeping and more mud.
At the first stream crossing (approx. 300' in from TH), seasonal overflow washes away from the trail and has exposed the culvert and created a muddy depression at the crossing. A small turnpike (8–10') could be beneficial here.

Installed PNT service markers at either terminus in the top run— between Ninemile Rd and the jeep road below it.
Scouted for way to connect the route below the private parcel (vs. the current user and catthe paths that cut through the property), cutting two logs and doing some limbing to clarify a workable cattle path that could serve as a trail there.
Added some flagging (orange, labeled "PNT") to clarify a way to connect from this lower route back up to the jeep road above it that terminates at the private property in the east.
On our way back to the eastern terminus at Chopaka Lk Rd, we dropped down in elevation and identified another jeep road lower down (vs turning sharply upslope at the cabin), that could function as a trail corridor. More work is needed to find the identify way to connect the dots for the PNT across this section, and steer clear of the private parcel.
More scouting and flagging is needed to identify an appropriate path across the middle of this route, connecting the existing jeep road trails and/or catthle paths, and circumventing the private property.0.5820020.250DNR - WA Dept Natural Resources

7/13/20247/19/2024Fourth of July Ridge 307westFrom west TH to approximate midpoint near Lightning Spring5Completed annual maintenance of western half of trail: Log out from trailhead to Lightning Spring (approx 5 miles)
Deferred maintenance and restoration: Focusing primarily on two miles between the first two landslide zones (approx. mi-1.5 to mi-3.5), we restored tread (width, outslope) to spec; the trail had almost disappeared in some places and required full restoration and minor realignments.
Built new tread to replace the trail across the first landslide zone at mi-1.5.
For proposed reroute over Lightning Spring landslide (at mi-5), felled trees (dead/burned) to clear new corridor.
Critical need: New tread construction for reroute around Lightning Spring landslide zone (mi-5); reroute is flagged, and corridor for reroute is mostly cleared. (Some high stumps left behind, however, bc. we ran out of fuel.)
Serious need: Tread restoration from mi-3.5 (Lightning Creek landslide) to mi-5 (Lightning Spring landslide)
Moderate-to-Serious need: (2) puncheon trail bridges within first mile eed to be replaced; first puncheon has a busted stringer; second puncheon is missing decking. Some materials (e.g., decking) may be salvageable to use for replacement puncheons; we identified larch nearby that could be used for construction of new bridge(s). In future, a third puncheon trail bridge could help protect crossing of headwaters for Siwash Creek at approx. mi-0.75.
Minor-to-moderate need: Tread restoration within first 1.5 miles (to first landslide zone)— suitable project site for volunteer work parties

7/26/20248/2/2024Fourth of July Ridge 307westWorking westbound between the landslides at Lightning Spring (mi-4.5) and Lightning Creek (mi-3.5).1Nearly completed the approx. 900-ft reroute of trail up and over a steep landslide at Lightning Spring (mi 4.5); tread is complete, but there are some loose ends with corridor work.
Initiated deferred maintenance/ restoration of tread between the two landslides (Lightning Creek at mi-3.6 and Lightning Spring at mi-4.6); completed approx. 0.29 miles of contiguous restoration westbound from Lightning Spring, and another 325 ft spot tread restoration between there and the Lightning Creek slide. Improved tread and cairns on either side of the Lightning Creek slide to increase visibility of trail approache in/out of the slide zone.
High stumps left behind from intial clearing of the Lightning Spring reroute; some logs have also fallen into the reroute and need to be cleared.
Roughly 3.5 miles of Fourth of July Ridge (west) are still due for tread restoration; minor-to-moderate in urgency need. (Approx. 0.7 miles between mi-3.4 and mi-4.2, and most of the first 2.8 miles.)
See also: previous service reports for notes re: puncheon bridges.
There will be increasingly urgent need for corridor maintenance (brush out) perhaps as soon as next year, as a thick understory of woody brush and saplings are regenerating and will soon begin to impinge on the tread. Brush may be an ongoing battle for the next couple of decades.

Initiated deferred maintenance of a 1.1 mile section (see range for location) — resetting tread to spec width and outslope, and brushing corridor to spec width
The rest of the trail is in moderate-to-severe need of deferred maintenance (tread and corridor); the need for tread restoration is most severe where it is narrow on steep side slopes, making it very hazardous for pack stock to navigate.
There are serveral mature trees standing immediately beside the tread, and on steep hillsides, which makes it extremely difficult for loaded pack stock to pass through.

1.9
Completed annual maintenance (log out) of Fourth of July Ridge TR 307.
Within the first 1.25 miles west of the 308x307 junction, restored approx. 800 ft of tread bench.
Critical need for roughly one mile of tread restration— between "the pass" above Junction 308, to about 0.4 miles east of Lightning Spring. (Roughly mi-5 to mi-6, as counted eastbound from Fourth of July Ridge TH). In this area the tread is no longer apparent on the ground.
Critical need for tread restoration and erosion mitigation (maybe even a realignment) in the steep ascent to "the pass".
At "the pass" the trail needs to be mitigated or realigned to protect an ephemeral stream.

From Harvey Creek Trailhead to where it opens up to Grassy Top
2
Crews have been reestablishing the forgotten segment of Grassy Top starting from Harvey Creek. Section of trail hasn't been maintained in over a decade, and several downed trees, new trees growing in the tread, and lots of brush was slow going. The crews finally made it through, connecting with the established Grassy Top trail, and has been met with even more brushing, but better maintained overall. Crews will be focusing on removing trees and downed trees from trail corridor now that IFPL has dropped to acceptable levels to do such work.
Nothing urgent as the trail has remained dormant and untouched for so long, but reports from crew is that it does need some tread work in areas that we will likely focus on in the 2025 season with winter approaching.

Working down roughly 400 ft from Duff Spring (at approx. mi-0.5)
0.06
At Duff Spring, in a roughly 100-ft section, we moved large rocks and earth to demarcate a tread separate from the rocky drainage that the trail had been scrambling up; we eliminated the most substantial of rock scrambling hazards, making trail passable for equestrian use again; clarified/ widened egress for drainage where runoff crosses trail.

Deferred maintenance, resetting an approx. 200-ft section of tread to TMO spec— removing slough to restore width, and touching up outslope and berms to ensure proper drainainge.
Within this range:
* Moderate need to fell a dead-standing tree that is too close to the trail; at a slight turn in the trail, it forces a mere sliver of tread to narrowly squeeze between the tree and a drainage ditchl; the tree presents a partial obstacle and hazard to a pack&saddle user.
* Moderate need for an additional 100-ish ft of tread restoration and drainage management in the steep, rocky zone below Duff Spring. (There are a couple more large rocks to move that will need a pair of pick mattocks and/or a rock bar, and some careful teamwork.)
* Moderate need for deferred maintenance— resetting remaining 2300-ft of tread (within this range) to spec, with minor corridor work (brush and limbing) in spots along the way. This low-hanging fruit provides and excellent location for volunteer work parties.

Deferred Maintenance: Restored 600-ft of eroded tread and narrow corridor (brush work) to spec width; insloped and ditched switchback to drain; bucked one fresh log.
Five fresh logs fallen near top of trail— too large for our handsaws.

The stream crossing 300-ft up from TH is prime ground for a project work party. The culvert is too small for peak seaonal runoff, when the stream jumps bank and has eroded the trail surface, leaving a muddy and rocky 20-ft gap in the prism. Recommend packing the gap with riprap (rocks) that will withstand seasonal overflow.

Moderate need to reset the remaining (one mile of) tread. Tread is often narrow and roughly outsloped; needs slough and berm removal to reset to spec. Considering our rate of progress during each volunteer work party this year, that could provide another eight Trail Eyes work parties.

Minor need to reset of the corridor to spec, removing saplings within the corridor.

Access road (FR 2040-065) was a little worse than it was in June— erosion, ruts, rocks knocked onto road by cattle upslope, and trees crowding corridor.
Along FR 2040-065, the riparian zone exclusion fencing for the S Fk SanPoil River is in poor (non-functional) condition, and heavy cattle pressure is having a detrimental impact on the waterway.
