Annual Maintenance & Protection
* Log out— cleared full range
* Corridor and tread maintenance at northernmost 0.3 miles— trimmed back brush, slough & berm removal to restore tread width
* Spot tread restoration where minor washouts had eroded bench
* Scouted first 0.1 miles of Beaver Lake trail (from southern trailhead)— no logs to clear
* Corridor Maintenance — Extensive brushwork needed on entire length of trails to maintain/restore corridor width; multilpe loppers needed for woody brush, and a few small handsaws for small trees/sapplings.
* Tread Maintenance — Slough & berm removal along entire length of trail to restore width and drainiage; spot tread repairs to address erosion. For example, at the Beth Lake switchbacks eroded tread could use minor reinforcement and fill.
* Log Out — (~1 mi) May be needed on the Beaver Lake section.

NOTE: Trailheads are unmarked. Beth Lake section begins at dam located at day-use area. Beaver Lake section (northern terminus) begins between campsites 6 & 7 at Beth Lake Campground.

* Restored corridor of reroute at mile-1 (installed circa 2013);
* Obliterated former section of tread (replaced by reroute) that was too steep (20-30% grade);
* Spot tread restoration where damaged by root wad

Annual Maintenance & Protection
* Log out — cleared full range (to Hunter Spring)
* Spot maintenance of tread (berm removal) and drains

* A WTA work party will complete tread & corridor (brush) restoration of restored reroute at mile-1.
* Log out may be needed in final 1.1 miles between Hunter Spring and Clackamas Mtn 312b - Cougar Creek. (It would be great help if a hiker were to scout that section and report back with intel.)
* PNT waymarkers could be installed at trailhead (stolen again!), at gateway junction at mile-0.1.

The rest of the trail in this range is in good condition:
* Corridor clearances are excellent, to spec.
* Tread is not to spec in terms of width, has short sections of minor cupping and berming, for example, but is still highly functional overall and NOT in urgent need of maintenance/restoration.

Utilized trail for crew leader training: tread work, puncheon bridge discussion.
* Log out — cleared full range
* At Puncheon 2, dug 75' of ditching upslope of trail to contain/redirect floodwaters breaching streambanks
* Realigned short section of tread to elevate it above lowest point in drainaige, and move overall trail closer to Pack & Saddle TMO specs.
* Cleared an additional 120' of corridor to prepare for future realignment of a short section of trail— to realign tread closer to intended path and eliminate sharp switchbacks that aren't to TMO spec.
* Annual Maintenance — Complete log out and annual maintenance to Hunter Spring
* Tread Realignment — Complete connection to original tread at top/bottom of realignment; obliterate/rehabilitate former trailway at lowpoint in drainage.

* ACCESS NOTE: Cougar Creek Rd continues to detoriate— with potholes and channeling, especially at the end of the road where trail users might otherwise want to park on the Forest Service's triangle of gravel between driveways.

Deferred Maintenance/ Restoration: returned (6/11) to rehab some tread and add drains. Spent some time at small water crossings, improving drainage and armoring the tread in muddy spots.
More tread/drainage restoration needed; tread restoration and/or reroutes around washouts.
There had been a sort puncheon bridge over a stream crossing, once upon a time, but that's gone. There may be some burned larch/fir in the area that could be harvesetd to rebuild, so long as the trees weren't already dead-standing when they burned. (TBD.)
There was a significant washout near the lower trailhead, and users have generated a path (eliminating <0.25 miles of the original trail) around it that may serve well as an official reroute.
There are several small waterflow crossings on the trail that could be improved/armored with rock work. The most signdicant of these crossings is at approx. 0.5 mile from lower TH, where there's also an approx. 30-ft wide washout; many rocks are available in that area that could be utilized for a retaining wall.

First mile of TR 308 is not as badly burned as the rest, but still needs tread rehab and drainage work.

Southside's puncheon, near the x307 junction, has partially collapsed. Didn't see readily available larch or fir nearby, so this may require hauling in materials to rebuild.

Overall in good condition. Lots of wet areas with crossing and culvert structures mitigating mud/erosion.
The 2020-2021 reroute has only received annual log out of a corridor meant for snowmobile use in winter— there is NO TREAD marking the reroute for summer use. (Although the corridor can be followed via the orange-diamond blazes posted on trees for winter use.)
Any follow up work to install tread on the reroute will be a big project, as it's still fairly flat grade over a marshy meadow, with large orcks and histosol (mucky) soil.

Full length— from Chopaka Lake Rd to Ninemile ck Rd
3.5Deferred Maintenance: Scouted for route clarification; cut brush and logs to clear corridor; added cairns at confusing junctions, documented tracks and waypoints Trail is challenging to follow from mile-1.2 to mile-2.3, westbound from the Chopaka MT road. In this section the route drafted on Gaia to explore at this time did not seem feasible due to a fence and deep gully. There is a social path based off of the FarOut route. We added some cairns in some areas but were hesitant because we were unsure about private property boundaries.
The upper part of the trail (the first 0.6 miles eastbound from Ninemile Ck Rd) doesn't show signs of tread/social trail. The route drafted Gaia to explore at this time seems much more feasible for a potential trail in this section (compared to the approximate lines for the PNT currently on maps).
3.533.5Added 10 cairns 326.25
We walked WEBO on Chopaka Creek Rd for the first 1.2 miles; it seemed drivable.

Hiking up this section— WEBO from mile 1.2 to 2.3— we struggled to find a trail. The proposed draft route (PNTA Trail Ops)— designed to circumvent the island of private property—  ended up being obstructed by a fence, anyway. Following earlier recordings of user-made routes (currently on FarOut) was easier; navigating this section EABO was easier than WEBO.

Hiking the Chopaka-Ninemile section EABO from Ninemile, there is no discernable foot path, so we bushwhacked roughly following the proposed draft route (PNTA Trail Ops). As projected, it was easiest to follow the grade along the edge of the forest. But there are numerous misleading cattle path braiding throughout, which can give users a false hope of finding an official trail.

Hiking the upper stretch of Chopaka-Ninemile WEBO was easier to navigate. We added cairns about 1 mile west of the cabin waypoint (48.91524, -119.74000) to make this section clearer. From here we found a path that largely follows the user-made route currently on FarOut, until we reached a fenced area. From there we stayed west rather than bearing southwest towards the treeline, following a cattle path that takes you to a developed spring.

WEBO from the spring, there is a well worn cattle path that cuts straight across the meadow. From that path you come out further north on the road that meets by the cabin. At that end we found a post defining the property boundary further down trail which, at that point, the route on FarOut skirts below. However, the FarOut route does fall within the private property boundaries indicated on the Trail Ops basemap. The developed spring also appears to be in private property, so we didn't do anything to add confidence markers or improve the cattle path leading to/from the spring.

The route across the private property offers better views, grade, and access to a developed spring. If the private property owners are okay with the the trail's presence, then it'd be better to develop the trail here rather than develop an alternate path (like the Trail Ops draft route we explored) to skirts around the property.
