Martha Mae Art En Plein Air3Mini Ceramic Palette
3
As temperatures rise, seasons shift, and fresh colors return to the landscape, we are feeling moved to spend more time outside. We love to venture out with creative supplies to make and take in the ever-changing landscape. Drawing can be a vehicle of deeper looking and inspection. Drawing or making outside adds so many elements operating beyond our control and can provide outside stimuli to consider and respond to. Making outdoors is a wonderful solitary activity, but it can also be a wonderful experience to share with a pet or a friend. It is special connecting and spending time with someone while looking in the same direction and sharing a view. We’ve assembled a list of some of our favorite creative tools to aid and inspire you on your outdoor adventures. This compact and portable stoneware palette by Facture Goods is the perfect addition to your creative kit. Featuring two brush rests and an area for mixing, it serves wonderfully as a watercolor or ink palette. Aron Fischer is the maker and mastermind behind Facture Goods. He creates ceramic, wood, and metal work as well as unexpected and curious combinations of the three by hand in his Chicago studio.

1Shell Watercolor Set
13
A beautiful collection of watercolor paintstones in an abalone shell with a travel brush, white sage, and a waxed cloth wrapper. The accompanying shell can be used as a palette and carrier and symbolizes a great star that appeared in the sky to guide the Anishinaabe people in their great migrations, prior to European contact. The shell is commonly used to hold a ‘smudge’. A bit of white sage and other plants burned in the shell and their smoke would dispel negative energy, and carry prayers to the creator. Beam Paints was started by Anong Beam who grew up harvesting hematite pigments with her parents in the stunning natural landscape of the La Cloche Mountains near her home in M'chigeeng First Nation on Manitoulin Island. She learned a love of pigment and color from her parents who are both artists and eventually this early knowledge of indigenous pigments was used to make her new line of paints focusing on sublime color and biodegradable packaging.

◝◜◠◠A few years ago Martha and I were painting at North Pond. I had just gotten us situated and ready to paint. The day was beautiful and the pond was serene. Suddenly Martha took off and sprinted toward the pond and a mother duck with her duckings filing in behind her. Martha leapt into the water and swam after them. I learned two things from this experience: Martha is an EXCELLENT swimmer and that nature can provoke unexpected and wonderful things within us. (No ducklings were harmed during this event).◝◜
