MUSKETS
15
By the 1700s, there were only 10-15 gunsmiths in the colonies, most weapons imported as parts from Europe. This is a very rarified profession.
16
17
1689, infact, at the court of William and Mary. King William III, worried by threats of invasion, sharply criticised the practice of obtaining military weapons from Holland. He was overheard by Sir Richard Newdegate, an MP for Warwickshire, who immediately spoke up on behalf of his Birmingham constituents - among whom were many fine gunsmiths. The result was a trial order for five of the leading Birmingham smiths. It was satisfactorily carried out, and a firm contract was made between the Government and the quintet for the supply of 200 snaphance muskets a month "at seventeen shillings per piece, ready money".
18
19
In the Birmingham gun district, " On Reference to the Directory of the present year, we find 599 names of manufacturers engaged in the different branches of the trade."
20
21
In full operation, a staff of between sixty and seventy men are there engaged in viewing the arms manufactured in the town. (This is the crown inspecting and "proofing" the arms).
22
23
So, from one "manufacturer" (A coalition of 5 gunsmiths in a single district/town) we get 2,400 muskets per year. With a total labor force (manufacturing, assembly and proofing) of 660 Men.
24
CANNONS
25
Due to shortage of skilled labor, Spain’s foundry at Seville barely produced three dozen average caliber guns per year during the first half of the 17th century. In contrast, England, the Netherlands, and Sweden each had multiple foundries that cast 100-200 cannon per year
26
27
...when examimbed before a Comission, John Browne stated that he employeed 200 men, and that his trade in guns was chiefly with the dutch. According to his evidence, there were at that period four furnaces casting guns".
28
29
So, going to assume that a single foundry with four furnaces is capable of 100 cannons per year.

CARRIAGES

GRAN TALLER DE COCH ES DE RECOLETOS, founded in 1846, between 150 and 200 workers, of which a third were French, produced 200 coaches per year.
