About the Diary Challenge: The intention is to get a page-a-day diary and write something on every page. These are the prompts I made up to get me through the challenge. You don't have to do these ones to 'win', you just have to fill your diary! Challenges usually had a weekly theme so you might want to do things in a slightly different order so each new theme starts on a Monday. I had a weekly dream based prompt because I have the luxury of vivid dreams. Not everyone remembers their dreams so I'll provide a one-word optional prompt for freewriting vaguely linked to what I wrote mine on. This challenge is designed to incorporate NaNoWriMo and Camp NaNoWriMo and includes preparation exercises for those. Some of the challenges are new for this spreadsheet and were not on the original blog posts I did at the time. I doesn't really matter which ones they were.

1Write a piece of flash fiction with the title ‘New Year’s Resolution’Guest Challenge: write 7 different scenes about 7 different characters – different genres, settings and possibly species – all performing the same action. The action is simple – they’re all having dinner. Oh, and one of them has to be a dragon.

7 days, 7 characters, 7 dinners, it’s like extreme Come Dine With Me. But without the cash prize. 		Guest challenge: Speculative Fiction
Come up with a ‘What if…” scenario and produce 7 different pieces of writing exploring it. They can all be scenes, but you can also do a script or a news report or anything else. What if people could fly? What if animals could talk? Pick something with enough scope for at least 7 different stories.
This month is Camp NaNoWriMo so there are no challenges. Have a go at developing one of your ideas from last month to fill up these pages.Potluck: Jot down any reflections on what you wrote last month. Anything you would change? Any ideas for a sequel?Scene Challenge: Write a scene that is set in a kitchen. It can be about anything at all.This is a Camp NaNoWriMo month. If you want to/can write a book then you should. Optional prompt: Stay in or go out?		Flash Fiction Challenge: Write a story. It starts with a character (the one you've already started or a new one) longing on to find 'they' have made new posts since they last logged on. Write 7 different conversations at a wedding. Any people at all can be involved, but they are all at the same wedding. 3Describe a new character who will feature in the rest of the week's challenges. They can't be from something you’ve already written/roleplay character etc. The point of the exercise is to make someone (or something) new. 4Dialogue challenge: Your new character needs a friend or companion. Write a conversation between them to show a bit about each of them and their relationship.Flash Fiction Challenge: Write a short story about anything, but the story must feature a tool. 5Scene challenge: Put your new character in a scene showing them doing something typical for them. 6Dream challenge: write something based on a dream you had this week. Your optional prompt is "karaoke".Guest Challenge: Who's line is it anyway?
Remember that game on ‘Whose line is it anyway?’ when they would start a scene and after a minute Clive Anderson would give them a genre and they had to switch? Same scene, same characters, just inexplicably transported into a new genre and no one seems to notice. Well that’s the challenge. The scene/story is called ‘The Chase’ and each day you must write the next part in a totally different genre. It could be about why they were imprisoned, about their release, or something that happens inside. 7Poetry Challenge: The poem can be anything but should be inspired in some way by something about your character. It could be about them, it could be something they would write, but it doesn’t have to be as obviously linked to them as that. Just use something from your character to help get you started and write what you like.Description Challenge: Pick a real world location you want to work with and come up with an alternative history setting based on it. Describe some of the key features. Magical London? Steampunk Manchester? Wait, maybe I should keep Steampunk Manchester...This week will be all about planning a script for a radio play. If can use the prompts to write prose instead:
Use a name generator to pick a name you like. Then look up the meaning, and use it for inspiration for some character traits. Now write the character description as if you were going to give it to a voice actor playing the part.		Freewriting or Flash Fiction: Theme "Cups"Potluck: write another story about a prisoner, but if the first character you made up was guilty this one has to be innocent. If you wrote about an innocent person, this one is guilty.Double challenge no 2: Write the same scene twice from 2 different POVs. Day 1: Write a scene from an adult's perspective. Day 2: Write the same scene from the POV of a child.Guest Challenge: Free writing - the topic is 'Nature vs Nurture'Scene Challenge: write a scene in which a character believes they have ruined an important part of the festival. You decide if they actually have or not.

8Flash fiction challenge: Write a short story starring that character you’ve been fleshing out all week!Dialogue Challenge: write a conversation involving one of the leaders of your alternative society. Anything from President of the United States to head of the parish council goes.Dialogue Challenge: Give your character a rival of some kind, maybe in work, in love, or in yacht racing. Portray a confrontation between them.Freewriting or Flash Fiction: Theme "Swords"Description Challenge: Set the scene by describing a University setting. This may be a conventional University, or it can be something completely different like a magical university, or an alien university, or whatever you like.Guest Challenge: write a scene featuring an experiment. 9Potluck: Novel idea - take everything you've done this week and make a brief outline for a longer story featuring this character.Scene Challenge: write the first scene of a book set in your alternate reality. The challenge is to decide what info about your setting you’re going to give the reader right away and to think about how you’re going to introduce them and still have an interesting scene with some action.Scene Challenge: Write a scene with your character at some kind of party. It can be anything and they don’t have to have been invited to the party :). But it must be written as a radio script.Description Challenge: Describe a pet of some kind and its owner. 10Describe a place in a state of decay or rot. You’ll be using it later in the week!Dream challenge: write something based on a dream you had this week. 11Write a conversation with 2 or more participants. The catch is that one of them can’t be heard by the others. You decide why and you decide if they know the others can’t hear them.Poetry Challenge: Pick any poem you like and rewrite as if it were written in your alternate history. I have no idea if this will work at all, but I’d suggest approaching it by searching for poems that contain an element that you have changed in your reality. If it doesn’t work at all, stuff it, just write a dirty limerick instead :).Freewriting: the topic is 'Energy'.Scene Challenge: Write a scene in which involves someone attempting to train an animal. It doesn’t have to be a pet this time. It could be a wild animal.Freewriting or Flash Fiction: Theme "The High Priestess"Dream challenge: write something based on a dream you had this week. Your optional alternative prompt is "army".Double challenge no 4: Write the same scene twice from 2 different POVs. This time the scene involves an animal. It can be more years if you like.

12This scene can be about anything and can have any number of characters. There’s just one rule: no talking. No dialogue of any kind. They can’t write notes to each other either. That’s not in the spirit of the challenge :).Flash Fiction Challenge: write in your alternative setting. You can write anything. This week we're writing another continuous story, but this time instead of jumping genres we're jumping characters. On day one write something from a character’s POV in the first person. On day two switch to someone else the first character interacted with in their scene and give them their own first person scene, and so on.		Freewriting or Flash Fiction: Theme "The Emperor"Flash Fiction Challenge: Write a short story entitled ‘Graduation’. It can be about anything.

Double challenge no 5: Write the same scene twice from 2 different POVs. Day 1: Write from the POV of a character who believes they are alone. Day 2: Write from the POV of someone else present the first character is unaware of.Guest Challenge: write a scene in which memory loss plays a part.Dialogue Challenge: write some banter between your hero and the foe they're facing.

14Poetry Challenge: Let your emo side out and write a tragically depressing teen angst poem. If you're too upbeat for emo you have permission to write an Elmo poem instead.Description Challenge: Describe love. Seriously! OK, to put it in context, you have a character who is in love and they are trying to describe how they are feeling. See, it’s not so bad.This week is focused on comic book scripts, but use the prompts for prose if you prefer:
Generate a character name using a generator, then look up the meaning of the chosen name and use it for inspiration for the character. It’s a comic book character so how they look is going to be much more important. Describe them!		Flash Fiction Challenge: Write a short story which features an animal as one of the main characters.Freewriting or Flash Fiction: Theme "The Hierophant"Potluck: write a short script starring the support staff of your University. 15Flash Fiction Challenge: Write a piece of flash fiction set in the decaying place you described on the 10th. It can be about anything that fits.Dialogue Challenge: write a conversation between a couple who are breaking up.Dialogue Challenge: write a conversation between your character and a friend or sidekick.Potluck: Write something based on a song. Write 7 scenes, or 7 flash fiction pieces. Each of them must feature a character who is alone for whatever reason. It can be any 7 people and any reasons at all. It could be a teen home alone, a mother indulging in a rare night away from the kids, the sole survivor of an apocalypse. If you need a bit more inspiration than that, try making them all different ages.		Double challenge no 6: Write the same scene twice from 2 different POVs. 16Freewriting: The first word is 'Dark'. After that anything goes!Scene Challenge: In this scene a character will profess a long held secret flame for another character, but will their affection be returned? Is the object of their affection even present in the scene?Scene Challenge: Write the script for a scene in which your character must overcome some kind of challenge. It can be something major, like saving the world, or something minor, like finding their house keys. Pesky things that they are.Description Challenge: Describe 2 main characters who are already in a long term relationship with each other. They may or may not be married, they may or may not be the same gender, and they may or may not be the same species! Any pairings are fine as long as they love each other.Freewriting or Flash Fiction: Theme "The Chariot"Guest Challenge: Write a scene which mentions 'Zombies'. You decide if they actually appear in the scene, or even exist in your setting!Freewriting: The prompt is 'Action'. Use any interpretation of the word you like.

18Dialogue Challenge: Write a conversation with 2 or more participants. At least one participant must be in the home of another participant for some reason. It can be any reason. They could be a guest, or maybe an intruder or a prisoner.Poetry Challenge: Write an anti-love poem. Freewriting: the prompt is 'Riddle'.Scene Challenge: A couple are enjoying a typical day, until one of them has an ex-lover show up unexpectedly. It should explain how come they are perfectly qualified for stopping terrorists (or whatever it is they are doing), yet are not able to gain employment doing it!

19Scene Challenge: Write a scene in which someone returns home from a long trip. How are they feeling? Has their home changed since they left it? Have they changed? 21Poetry Challenge: either write a poem that uses homes or houses as a metaphor for something else, or write a poem that uses something else as a metaphor for homes or houses. Hmm, yes, I think that makes sense…Description Challenge: Describe a villain doing something villainous. This week is focused on motion scripts of any kind, plays, TV, etc, but you can use the prompts for prose if you prefer:
Generate a character name using a generator, then look up the meaning of the chosen name and use it for inspiration for the character. The amount of physical description you need will vary dependent on your medium (ie. you'll want a lot more for an animation than a stage play!)		Flash Fiction Challenge: Write a short story which features a couple. It can be about anything, but must include a ring. It does not have to be the kind of ring that goes on a finger. Could be an earring, a boxing ring, a phone ring, any kind of ring at all.Dialogue Challenge: Write a conversation between a revolutionary and a political leader in your society.Freewriting or Flash Fiction: Theme "The Hanged Man"Scene Challenge: Write a scene involves your pirate doing something traditionally piratey, like attacking a ship or hunting treasure or pillaging a harbour.Guest Challenge: Write a scene in which the colour yellow is important.

22Flash Fiction Challenge: the title is ‘Moving Day’. 25Dialogue Challenge: This week the dialogue is a monologue. Internal, external, and moody Bella-esque 1st person prose are all acceptable. The speaker/thinker/brooder must either BE a vampire or vampires must be the subject of their soliloquy (ok, technically monologues and soliloquies are not the same. 26Scene Challenge: The subject of the scene is vampires vs. <insert foe of choice>. Vampires vs Werewolves. Vampires vs Ninjas. Vampires vs Robots. Wait, I think they did that one on Buffy…Anyway, pick a foe for your vampire and pit them against each other in a battle to the death, a battle of wits, a battle of mario karts, whatever takes your fancy.Flash Fiction Challenge: Write a piece of Flash Fiction in which the main character is not human. They can be anything else.Flash Fiction Challenge: Write a short script involving your character. It can be about anything that works for them.Potluck: longer story idea
Make some notes about how this revolution would play out in the long run. Will your society change, for the better or worse, or will rebellion be stamped out and the status quo preserved?		Freewriting or Flash Fiction: Theme "The Star"Second chance challenge no 3: Optional prompt: The person is fully aware of the reset and the outcome of the first scene at the start of their second chance.Description Challenge: Describe a character in two ways - as they really are and how they present themselves virtually. This could be a modern day Facebook type thing, or it could be far-future full online emersion. Anything you like. NaNoWriMo Prep: Write a scene featuring your antagonist. Don't try to write something that you want to put in the book. Just try to get to know them a bit better.Description Challenge: Describe a character who is at the end of their story. Maybe it’s a great hero who’s finished their adventure, or finally got the girl, or a villain who’s been defeated. It could be anyone. Just think about what their story might be and how it might have changed them from the beginning.

29Flash Fiction Challenge: You may write any vampire related story you wish. Optional prompt is the awakening of a new vampire.Dialogue Challenge: write a conversation between at least 3 people. The topic of conversation is a character who is absent.
