| 2022-02-27 | Brockholes | HD9 7B | 55 - 64 | female | 5 | There are lots public footpaths which are well signposted. I don't cycle so can't comment | 3 | A half hourly train service would be great | 5 | 4 | 5 | The recreation ground in Brockholes could be improved for the whole community to use, perhaps outdoor exercise equipment, putting green. Something to better use the large open green space | 4 | See previous question | 3 | Will the council approving so many new housing developments in the Holme Valley the pressure on existing doctors schools will only increase. This needs to be addressed | 3 | 2 | The housing developments in Brockholes have only been for large houses the council has not ensured that there are starter homes being built. I have been very disappointed in the whole way that the council has dealt with the new housing developments in Brockholes, both the councillors and planning department. | 4 | 4 | 5 | 5 | 2 | The planning process allows for comments but I don't feel that I have been listened to. Developments have gone ahead as eventhough the council may have declined an application the developer has appealled and the council eventually gives approval so the process is flawed and appears like my views are worth nothing. This is specifically my experience with the developments on Lancaster Lane in Brockholes. | Provision for health care and schools, due to increased housing developments. Improvement to the recreation area in Brockholes. Increased good quality employment opportunities. Improvement to the planning processes | Increased health care and school provision. Attract new employers to the area. Upgrade leisure sport provision. Change the planning process away from it's bias towards developers and towards the needs and views of local residents

| 2022-02-28 | Brockholes | HD9 7A | 65 - 74 | female | ? | 4 | Some footpaths are in poor repair or becoming overgrown | 4 | Never use it | 3 | Parking often obstructs junctions and causes issues to traffic trying to pull out at the junctions. Too much random parking for school pick up and drop off. | 5 | Lots of poorly/ irregular maintained foot paths. Litter and dog dirt on footpaths. Building on Lancaster Lane, with associated vehicles, make access more difficult. Real concerns for safety on that footpath from vehicles. | 5 | Some footpaths very overgrown. Poor conditions in riverside footpath since flooding | 5 | Playground opposite village hall needs more and better seating. Natural play could’ve encouraged | 6 | Shop, food outlets and pub serve village well. Village hall well used. No luncheon club now Methodist church has closed so no meeting place for older folk | 5 | I’m not working but there seems to be a variety of opportunities in the small industrial units. | 3 | Too much house building of expensive homes in high density is massively degrading wildlife, destroying habitat and breaking up wild areas with no green “highways” to allow wildlife to move around. We will soon be “no Brockholes” | 4 | I can’t speak for younger people but there doesn’t appear to be any opportunities for older folk to socialise outside of the pub. | 6 | 5 | I was burgled soon after moving in! | 5 | Most of the village appears well kept but there are pockets of mess. | 4 | I’m hoping this will enable people to feel they are contributing. Certainly I personally feel disempowered in the planning process despite attempting to offer my opinion. How will people know about this opportunity if they are not online? | A more thoughtful and joined-up approach to residential building planning Better maintenance of footpaths Clearer policy to protect and enhance wildlife and protecting the “wild” spaces | Communication Regular maintenance of public ares including footpaths More emphasis on local opinion and wildlife in planning Protected natural areas

The council clearly do not understand it either, as I emailed asking where the rabbits had gone from castle hill, the second paragraph of the reply said ' Kirklees Council do not allow hunting on its land' I hadn't asked about it and anyway it would have been Pest Control! NOT HUNTING ! | 2 | I guess the grass verges get cut, but road signs aren't cleaned, speed limit signs don't appear to have been uncovered properly since installation years ago.Dont think there are any public buildings being maintained. | 1 | The council wouldn't listen to any proposals to allow pest control on its land to help Red Squirrels come back, they are petrified of upsetting voters. | Don't know apparently I'm on question 15 and I can't view them all from here! | As per q15

Double park all the way up the hill on Oakes lane | 2 | The local shop is a blot on brockholes, it is in a state of disrepair and attracts the wrong kind of people. Rubbish and pallets piled up outside, a light hanging off above the doorway outside. A great hairdressers have to travel to Honley or Holmfirth for library or gps, dentist etc | 4 | 1 | We have no homes that are suitable for the elderly at all, elderly who live in Oakes avenue have to move out of the village they have lived in for a long time when they are asked to downsize. The avenue quite frankly is an eyesore compared to how it used to be. The council would be better removing the grass verges and make it into parking spaces, as the grass verges get used for that and are churned up muddy messes. New builds are too expensive for anyone to buy. | 1 | 3 | 2 | Council move people here from inner town and quite honestly it doesn’t work, within a week if someone being moved onto the avenue the police visited this is a regular occurrence and saddening to see | 1 | Shop in the village | 3 | Better housing for the elderly Ask people to be responsible for keeping their home exteriors tidy and safe Parking an issue for school
| 2022-02-28 | Brockholes | HD9 7A | 45 - 54 | female | 5 | The main road is very very busy not just at so called.peak times. We've noticed a big difference in the last 5 years. You have trouble crossing down Neiley. Walking.and.riding a bike is dangerous there and on narrow roads, eg Smithy place, station road, as they are rat runs. | 5 | Don't travel by bus too expensive, although there are plenty of services. You can get a taxi cheaper if there 2 of you. Train is good for travelling to Huddersfield or Sheffield, but a.bit slow! | 5 | Lots of cars double parked on residential areas and at school pick up/drop off. War Memorial junction and the junctions leading from there onto the main road are dangerous, can't see for parked cars outside rock terrace obscuring view of oncoming traffic. Also Scar End crossroads. Traffic is very very busy on the main road, with cars travelling at speed after speed cameras | 5 | Nice parks Riverside walk More industrialised on the main road. 11 | 2022-02-28 | Brockholes | Hd97e | 45 - 54 | male | Resident | 1 | The pavements around Brockholes area are eroded & uneven. As a cardiac athlete I frequently run & have injuries caused by the condition of the pavements on the main road & also the area around thongsbridge to Honley it’s a discrace | 5 | Served by road & rail. Only improvement would be more frequent rail. | 1 | No parking & heavy traffic. Rat runs down smithy place, no traffic lights on smithy place. | 1 | Ugly buildings on main road. 12 | 2022-02-28 | Brockholes | HD9 7A | 55 - 64 | female | Related to community consultation | 5 | When walking around Brockholes most footpaths/pavements are fine but some aren't, they are narrow or have overgrown vegetation or are blocked by bins, in most places because the bin owners leave them on the path instead of putting them in their garden areas | 4 | We are lucky to have both bus and trains in Brockholes, trains are fast and reasonably priced but only one an hour (less on Sundays), buses are more frequent but horribly expensive, I haven't been on a bus for several years because of this | 4 | To many vehicles for the size of the roads, a sign of the times I know but it does mean some roads are very tricky to drive on and others even worse to try and park on | 6 | 7 | 4 | Only really two areas to play but neither of them are really suitable for young children, the playground areas definitely need more facilities, esp for toddlers/young children | 2 | Very, very little in the way of amenities in Brockholes, no doctors, chemist, post office, butchers etc only a general shop, a hairdresser, a sandwich shop, a pub and a takeaway shop, plus a pub, garage with shop and bowling club at one end of the village (too far for most villagers to walk to, esp on a night) | 4 | 4 | 4 | 2 | I have lived in Brockholes for over 30 years yet don't feel part of the village, to be honest I never have done. I do love living here and have no plans to move but I definitely don't feel 'part of the village' | 6 | 5 | 3
| 2022-02-28 | Brockholes | HD9 7E | 55 - 64 | female | Community consultation | 5 | Generally good but walking can, on occasions, be hampered by parked cars on pavements. This is especially the case on Holmebank Mews at weekends and Brockholes Lane at school drop off & pick up times. Smithy Place Lane can be daunting for walkers at peak times as some drivers go too fast! Traffic on New Mill Road can be daunting at peak times for less confident cyclists due to parked cars from Rock Terrace up to Thurstonland Bank. | 5 | It would be preferable to have more than one train per hour to Huddersfield at peak times. Buses reasonably frequent but fares are expensive. | 5 | As previously stated, parents parking by the school can be an issue at certain times. Traffic on New Mill & Huddersfield Roads often exceeds the speed limit. Smithy Place Lane has become a 'rat run' at peak times, with speeding cars, which are especially dangerous by the blind bend. The junction of Smithy Place Lane & Huddersfield Road can also be hard to get out of due to speeding traffic on the latter. There has been an increase in traffic generally in Brockholes, in past 5 or so years, on both New Mill & Huddersfield Roads which increases travel time at peak times. The recent addition of the pedestrian crossing by Alexander's has definitely helped pedestrians to cross New Mill Road more safely. The number of on-road parked cars on Holmebank Mews and New Mill Road has increased over the past 10 years due to households having more than one car. | 6 | Improvements to the park over the years have been beneficial. Mario's (New Mill Rd) signage isn't particularly attractive. The Rock's flower displays always looks good. | 6 | The public footpath through Hagg Wood to Mytholm Bridge is a pleasant walk. The building works at the end of River Holme View & Lancaster Lane have, in my opinion, had a negative impact aesthetically & environmentally. The walk from Smithy Lane across the fields up to New Mill Road is also pleasant with plenty of wildlife (roe deer, muntjack deer, birds etc.). Unfortunately, planned building works here will affect the area aesthetically but, more importantly environmentally. | 6 | Brockholes Rec. has been improved greatly over the past 10 years or so. The play area is particularly good. It is generally well kept, though I understand there have been incidents with teenagers drinking etc. I believe the After School Club still regularly uses the facilities during good weather. Not sure whether local families use it much though. My neighbours children seem to play mainly on the road during good weather. | 5 | Local shop and garage have good opening hours but both are quite expensive. Aldi & Lidl are both close though. Alexander's has always been a great asset to the village (and the food is excellent value) and the Rock seems to be popular. GCHQ is expensive. It was a shame when the Post Office closed. I have been at Oaklands Health Centre, Holmfirth, for a long time, so can't comment on how easy or otherwise it is to get a GP practice place. There are no NHS dentists locally. As far as I am aware the Preschool & Primary School are both still very good. However, as the latter is one form entry, there may be concerns about available places should more family housing be built. As I'm not religious, I can't comment on how St. George's Church or the Methodist Chapel impacts the community. The Village Hall hosts fairly regular events and is the home of the after school club. | 4 | There are businesses in and around Brockholes & Honley but I don't know enough about them to comment. | 4 | The village has grown substantially over the past 30 or so years. There are current building works at the end of River Holme View and Lancaster Lane. My understanding is these homes will cost in excess of £500,000, which in my opinion, are not 'affordable'. The proposed Miller Homes Estate is for in excess of 100 houses, the majority of which are over £400,000. In addition to environmental issues, there are large concerns regarding school places, access, increased traffic, sewerage/drainage etc. The level of the River Holme at Smithy Place Lane was very close to the bottom of the Toll House Bridge, after Storms Dudley & Eunice. Increased run off & CSO drainage from a new housing estate will surely exacerbate this? The Rock Pub's cellar also flooded, after these storms, due to damaged water/wastewater drains on the New Mill Road opposite. | 4 | The Village Hall holds events & the Rock Pub is popular but I would generally go to Honley, Holmfirth or Huddersfield to socialise. | 5 | I, personally, was more involved in the Brockholes community when my children were primary school aged. My worklife is also away from the village. The age demographic of my neighbours has changed in the past 10 years or so, and as a consequence, with the exception of one or two neighbours, I have very little commonality. | 6 | I believe Brockholes is, in the main, a safe place to live, but not as safe as it was when I first moved here over 20 years ago. | 6 | In the main, Brockholes is a well cared for area, with householders and businesses keeping homes & buildings well maintained. | 6 | The local parish councillor, Charles Greaves, has a good record in keeping locals informed of issues. He posts on the local Facebook Group (which is where I saw the link for this survey). Unfortunately, the local MP, Jason McCartney, is less involved in Brockholes. He does a lot in Honley (where he lives) but I don't recall him doing much for Brockholes in either of his periods as MP. | The main issue, in my opinion, is the proposed Miller Homes Estate and the potential environmental impact, increased traffic, infra-structure issues. | Retract the Miller Homes planning permission.
| 2022-02-28 | Brockholes | HD9 7E | 45 - 54 | female | 4 | 4 | 3 | Parked cars up new mill road going out of Brockholes towards new mill is ridiculous you can’t use the pavement on the left hand side and also where the houses have dug out to park cars is dangerous as the cars stick out into the road pavement. Also parking below the school in term times is sometimes dangerous as parent seem to dump their cars and forget all common sense like double parking on a bend. | 4 | 6 | 4 | 6 | 5 | 5 | New houses being built are often out of prices for local people forcing them to look further afield | 5 | 5 | 5 | 5 | 5
| 2022-02-28 | Brockholes | HD9 7B | 35 - 44 | female | We live in Brockholes | 6 | 4 | I don’t use public transport so can’t comment | 3 | New Mill Road outside Rock Terrace and the takeaways can get busy with parking and makes it very difficult to get out at Brockholes Lane (both exits). Also at the top of Oakes Lane there are often cars parked on both sides making it a little awkward to come round from Birch Park. Lots of cars cut across to and from The Cutting without giving way to the traffic on Oakes Lane/Birch Park. Brockholes school traffic is also awkward. | 4 | Oakes Avenue grass verges are very muddy the majority of the year because of all the road parking. The park behind Rock Terrace isn’t easily accessible by pram. | 6 | As mentioned before, the park isn’t pram accessible, therefore, also not wheelchair friendly. | 6 | As before-pram access | 4 | No post office, shop is often closed. Would be nice to have a cafe on the main street. | 5 | 5 | 5 | 5 | 5 | Quite a few burglaries in the area and opportunistic behaviour. | 6 | 3 | Building new housing estates without thought for the community, logistics and infrastructure. Money-making developers build crowded sites and leave without thinking about schools, traffic, roads, doctors, etc. | Avoiding building on green land, fixing parking on roads which are likely to cause accidents/make muddy mess of pavements and rising crime. | More considerate parking/yellow lines/parking permits, road bumps up Oakes Lane, remove the grass verges on Oakes Ave.

| 2022-03-01 | Brockholes | HD9 6H | 45 - 54 | male | Community consultation | 5 | Lots of walking routes and easy to get around the village, but most services are outside the village, and cycling is difficult and over two A roads. | 6 | More frequent trains and more parking at the station would be great. | 4 | There is lots of on street parking and sometimes it blocks pavements. The main roads are very busy. | 5 | The main road cuts the village in two and is busy and noisy, but the village is nice and the surrounding countryside and riverside woodland are lovely. | 6 | Lots of open spaces and places to walk. The riverside is accessible but the woodland and hillside isn't. | 5 | Both recs are well used, but the main rec (bottom) needs more equipment and more maintenance - the goal areas are really worn and 2 of the 3 entrances are straight onto the road. Playing in the woods and fields is a real bonus. There are no children's sports clubs in Brockholes, but plenty around the area. | 4 | Not much entertainment in the village beyond the village hall and the pubs, but there is lots to do in the wider area but this is dependent on transport. | 3 | Work in the village is limited, but it is a good commuter area and convenient for the 3 cities. The train line needs to be faster and more frequent but it provides a good link into Huddersfield. | 4 | Brockholes has seen a few modest estate in recent years and these have fitted in well - there is an application to build a new housing estate at Smithy Place and the design means it doesn't link into the village as well as destroying a nice green part of the village - the riverside walk comes through the fields and there are badgers and owls nearby and only residents seem to value it as a green open space. | 3 | The village hall has some activities, the churches offer little but the pub in the centre tries. For most activities and events you need to travel to the bigger villages nearby. | 6 | Brockholes is a quiet village in the main and I think Brockholers value the village and have a strong sense of connection to it - especially if they went to the school. There are many old families with extensive family links, but new residents are made welcome and fit in easily. | 5 | Brockholes feels safe, but traffic is an issue and there are lots of routes without proper footpaths. There is little for teenagers to do in the village and this can sometimes result in problems of vandalism and anti-social behaviour. | 5 | The park would benefit from some maintenance and investment. There is no residents body other than the Village Hall committee. | 5 | Brockholes is often overlooked as a meeting place but in the main people can contribute if they want to - like this Ask Brockholes - sometimes it is about knowing whether the effort will result in any real benefit. | Traffic can be an issue and it can be difficult to get out of the village onto the main roads. The bottom rec needs regular maintenance. New housing just takes away from the village and doesn't really help address any of the issues. | Reduce speeds. Work on the bottom rec. Refuse the new development.
| 2022-03-02 | Brockholes | HD9 7A | 25 - 34 | female | Community consultation | 4 | I think walking is very good, but I wouldn't feel safe cycling. | 7 | Very good transport into Huddersfield | 4 | I live on Quarry Close where residents have to park on the pavement. I'm concerned about when pavement parking becomes illegal as there is no where else we could park. | 4 | Grassy areas are very churned up due to lack of parking. | 7 | Lots of fields and woodland. Although this will be impacted by the ridiculous housing proposals. | 7 | 5 | Good for a small village, but we miss the post office | 5 | 7 | Yes. NO MORE HOUSES. This is damaging the wildlife and surroundings that make Brockholes special. This includes badgers being disturbed, the mascot of Brockholes. | 4 | I don't go to the pub or have children at the school, so I don't know anyone from socialising within the village. | 4 | It feels like a dormitory town. | 7 | 6 | Yes. I hope the Methodist church is looked after now it is not in use. | 1 | We are never listened to over concerns about house building, despite many residents lodging complaints. | Stop house building. | Refuse planning permission and listen to residents concerns.
| 2022-03-02 | Brockholes | HD9 7E | 25 - 34 | female | 4 | Difficult to walk to the houses at the bottom of Brockholes Lane near the green as there is no pavement there and it is on a blind corner where lots of cars speed around | 6 | 6 | 4 | The bridge on the footpath between the campsite and Luke Lane is in desperate need of a clean up and repainting | 6 | 6 | 5 | A better/bigger/more reliable shop is needed in the village | 6 | 6 | 6 | 6 | 7 | 4 | A few roads are in need of resurfacing and again the bridge near the campsite needs attention | 3 | A pavement extension is needed on Brockholes Lane (it currently ends just before the gate for number 50) to allow safe access to the houses for those in wheelchairs or with prams | Extend the ovement and repaint the bridge
| 2022-03-02 | Brockholes | HD9 7B | 75 and over | male | My wife and I have lived in Brockholes since 1987 and thus we feel our comments relate to 35 years of seeing the changes, some good and others very poor, in this village, with no Post Office now, no road clearance when it snows, no pavements in Birch Park and speeding traffic of delivery vehicles ; with blocked roads due to cars parking and dropping off or picking up school children or mothers standing talking for ages. Pavements blocked with wheely bins and just left on the pavements, causing difficulty for aged people to get past the objects who have a mobility problem. Dogs fouling the streets with no poo bags or bins to deposit such. No Notices on new street lights; about dogs on leads, fouling, picking up dog poo in Birch Park, and when one request a dog owner to do so, the answer is " NO Notices" and further abuse from the same. | 1 | Cars parking on pavements and at junctions where they should not. Cars and vans using the roads like racetracks both at day and night. Cars not slowing down at junctions or stop signs. Aging persons cannot sprinkle grit or salt at the hills and bad corners. ( at entrance to Birch Park ) | 1 | Poor service altogether. | 1 | Too many cars per household and being left in the street or on pavements so causing a greater problem. General lack of thought and some people would park on one's foot if they could get away with it. | 2 | The wheely bins left around make the areas very untidy and grass areas need tending more | 1 | People fly tipping cause a great problem. People throwing garden waste over fences onto railway line. | 2 | I am past the age of "PLAY" | 1 | No Post Office. No glass collection. | 2 | I retired 25 years ago ! ! ! | 1 | Areas are listed for housing but the roads are lacking desperately for such excess building. | 3 | 1 | No comments for this question. | 2 | I had to complain about the roads because of pot holes. This has been resolved but speeding traffic in Brockholes is still a problem A 20 mph speed limit would be helpful. | 2 | No Dog notices on lamp posts. 23 | 2022-03-02 | Brockholes | HD9 7A | 35 - 44 | female | To give opinion of the area in which I live | 4 | There is good walking close by, however the top of Oakes Lane (which is the footpath), is regularly overgrown and slippery underfoot. The field to it's left is very muddy/boggy and would benefit from a better footpath. Whilst off-road cycling is very good in the area, road cycling is not very good as there are no cycle lanes and lots of cars are parked on the roads, making it very narrow and dangerous due to car doors opening. | 5 | Good buses and having the train station local is great, however they are not very regular. | 5 | Busy during school hours, but considerate parking on the whole. Only one place which is safe to cross with children is by Oakes Lane/Brockholes Lane, as has an island in the middle of the road. Oakes Lane between New Mill Road and Brockholes Lane is difficult to pass another car, especially when passing a bus. This is due to the number of parked cars | 6 | Some nice old houses and lots of greenery | 6 | Lots of green space, with beautiful views of Holmfirth and woods | 1 | The steps to the slide feels like it has a rung at the bottom missing. It doesn't seem accessible to young children, or older children who are too big for the small play area, but struggle to get onto the bigger play area. The whole play area needs a revamp and the steps that lead from the park to Brockholes Lane is extremely dangerous, as it leads straight out onto a road, which cars do drive quickly down. There is no fencing around the park, which is dangerous as plenty of exits around the park, all of which lead to a busy road | 1 | A shop that is hardly open, a pub, a takeaway, sandwich shop and a hairdressers. There is nothing else local and requires a drive. | 6 | Due to the industrial estate, there is plenty of opportunities for work and with the buses and train station being so accessible, there are plenty of further opportunities | 3 | New housing built too close to natural habitats. Lots of greenery disappearing | 2 | Every suitable place is a drive away, or reasonable walk. Only one bench at the park, but as the park is not fenced in, not suitable for parents with small children. No cafes etc | 4 | Having recently moved to the area, it is really beautiful, however no real knowledge of Brockholes. The village hall is good for community meetings, and there are more sessions now being organised | 6 | Feel very safe - packages can be left on front doorstep and they are still there when I return. No anti-social behaviour | 4 | General maintenance of drains, the park, footpaths needed and needs to be kept up to date | 3 | First chance I've had to voice my opinions of the area and lived here for over 12 months | - The park - Brockholes Lane - maybe one way or "passing places" - Drainage | - The park - updated equipment. Fencing around the outside of the play park - Brockholes Lane - maybe one way or more "passing places" - Drainage - regular maintenance and cleaning of the roads and drains
| 2022-03-02 | Brockholes | HD9 7a | 35 - 44 | female | received request in the post from local counsellors. | 2 | Moved here a year ago, excited to have countryside to walk 2 dogs in. We still have no idea where the public walks are, where is safe to walk or where is even possible to go and end up walking up and down the main road, and round the running park. Not very exciting for them. The pavements on the main new mill road are so narrow that walking 2 dogs and or pushing a pushchair is frightening and too many cars park blocking the pavement so we have to walk into the road. Walking in this village is not fun. | 1 | dont use it. | 1 | see previous comments. too many people don't use their garage and have too many cars so block the pavements, restricting access. There's no where to park near the local shop (which is in itself a joke). No where to park near post box. | 2 | nothing pretty about Brockholes when you drive through - feels too industrial, even more so with more builders merchants popping up on the side of the road. | 1 | very little open space. 2 parks - 1 with no play equipment at all, nothing to encourage use and the other is poorly light when dark so doesn't feel safe and both have openings onto the main road so can't let dogs off or young children run safely. No other wide open green space that I am aware of. | 1 | 1 | Brockholes offers nothing. Even the local shop is useless as it's never open when needed and is so limited. We did have fish and chip van, now that's no longer allowed to pull up, and we've lost out post office van. | 1 | 4 | don't know | 1 | We hoped to meet new people when moving hear a year ago - I feel totally isolated and despite having a 1 yr old and dogs and therefore getting out and about, have made no new friends as I am not aware of any local groups that would facilitate this (and I have looked). | 1 | I feel it's just a road with a few houses either side. it doesn't feel like a village to me at all. Not compared to the villages I moved here from in Sussex. Im very homesick. | 5 | THere's been a lot of reports of people entering back yards and cars stolen from drives which makes me nervous. I've also seen people entering our front garden and removing things they think are scrap which aren't which I don't like. | 4 | 1 | no outside space, especially for dog walking and kids to play. no sense of community.

| 2022-03-02 | Brockholes | HD9 7B | 55 - 64 | female | 5 | Safe crossing outside school is required, car parking is a hazard at these times. | 5 | I am not aware of any bus connection to the train station. | 4 | School parking is definitely a hazard, especially for children as pedestrians. | 6 | 7 | 4 | Dog faeces is a frequent problem in the recs and footpaths. Adult equipment in the recs may encourage fitness, although with such easy access to the outdoors there really is no excuse. | 5 | As I am fit I can get to Honley or Holmfirth, however for those less fortunate there is very little to support access to services. | 5 | 6 | 4 | 4 | Nothing in the area gives any indication of history or identity. A history board would be a very useful addition and a great community project | 4 | I think social isolation is an issue leading to an insecure feeling. | 5 | Dog faeces. | 6 | Safer parking. Improved access to services. Dog faeces/loose dogs. History Board | History board/school project. Dog warden questionnaire, identify problem owners, education. 27 | 2022-03-02 | Brockholes | HD9 7A | 45 - 54 | male | Community consultation | 4 | I regularly walk with my partner who has a visual disability - the bins from Rock Terrace as it faces onto New Mill Road regularly prove an obstacle and I think these properties should be given other places to store these. | 4 | Generally this is very good however I think it would be good to commission a bus service to the GPs in Holmfirth. | 4 | I can't see the point in introducing a 20mph zone around the school - the area is generally congested due to parked vehicles and I can't ever think of a time when I've driven at more than 20mph up the entire length of Brockholes Lane. | 3 | 4 | The river is a great community asset and I think that more care should be taken of the river banks and the path that runs along them, elements of this aren't well maintained. Badgers are an important part of the fauna of the area and I'm concerned that they've been adversely affected by the housing development on Lancaster Lane and the dumping of large quantities of soil there from the nearby building site. | 4 | 3 | I think the village would benefit from better provision of public transport to the GPs in Holmfirth which serve the majority of the area. | 4 | 4 | 4 | 4 | 4 | 4 | 4 | 1. Inconsiderate people park near the station on the bend to drop off and pick up, facing the oncoming cars with their full lights on. There are too many pot holes on Ridings fields making cars swerve which can be dangerous to other users and damage cars. | 5 | During bad weather the poor state of Brockholes lane going up under the railway bridge means a lot of debris is washed down the lane. The rec in the centre of the village could do with more seating. | 6 | 6 | more facilities in the rec would encourage more children of all ages. | 6 | 6 | 6 | 5 | There is only the village hall offering occasions to meet others, apart from those with school age children. | 6 | There is a sense of belonging, especially when my children were young, I was then more involved,. | 6 | 6 | There are no recycling facilities, the village is usually pretty tidy. The village trust is a productive group. | 5 | Local opinion was canvassed regarding new housing, however I do not think issues regarding the local school and sewerage plant not being able to cope with increased demand was taken into consideration. | Parking around the local school The poor state of Brockholes lane, pot holes etc. Improved recreation facilities on the rec. | Resurface Brockholes lane, higher up. 29 | 2022-03-03 | Brockholes | HD9 7E | 65 - 74 | female | 5 | The pavements could be maintained better. As a cyclist, the number of potholes in our local roads concerns me. | 5 | As a car owner I rarely use public transport, but am aware that as I get older I will be grateful for both bus and train availability. | 5 | Lots of people drive too quickly on local roads e.g. Oakes Avenue - could more signage be used to remind drivers that these are residential areas? | 5 | Not really relevant to Brockholes | 7 | The riverside walk and other local footpaths are appreviated. Even more reminders to dog owners to clean up after their animals would be appreciated. | 5 | There are play areas available, but I've no idea how much they are used. | 5 | We are grateful to have a village shop, pub, school, church and village hall. All other amenities have to travelled to. | 4 | Sorry, no idea | 3 | We need houses which are affordable for the local people who earn local wages. Most of the new houses in the area are not in the reach of first time buyers. We need more town/terraced houses. The local builders must also contribute to the local economy. | 3 | Now that the Methodist church has closed, we have lost the soup lunch, an opportunity for older people to meet. | 5 | Not able to answer this | 5 | Personally I feel quite safe, our area is well lit at night. | 4 | Litter and dog mess are always issues which could be better dealt with. | 3 | Not sure | Better road maintenance Better pavement maintenace Slow down traffic on residential roads | Signage for residential roads Kirklees to act promptly to road maintenance issues
| 2022-03-03 | Brockholes | HD9 7B | 75 and over | female | To find out how things and particularly traffic problems in Brockholes are going to be improved | 1 | Roads and pavements too narrow. Many pavements have over hanging branches. Many obstacles on pavements. Most pavements have raised or uneven slabs which are trip hazards. Hardly any paths in the area for older females to feel they can walk safely free from the stress of falling and assaults. Certainly would never go out on my own after dark | 2 | Bus stops no longer have a timetable attached to the post holding the bus stop sign. Not everyone has a smart phone to check arrivals and departure times. Recently stood for over threequarters of an hour in the pouring rain waiting for a bus from Honley Bridge to Brockholes. As an elderly person having to stand for a long time with no information made me feel very ill. It would help if the local single decker bus went to and from Brockholes station before going up Oakes Avenue. If I have been shopping in Holmfirth or Honley or Meltham I have to have taxi home because I cannot carry my shopping up to Ridings Fields. | 1 | Brockholes J & I School is an accident waiting to happen. The speed of traffic between Brockholes Lane and Farnley Tyas, under the rail bridge, is far too fast. Cars parked on either side of Brockholes Lane causes a bottle neck. This is particularly difficult at school times. Many cars park on the pavement too. Getting out from Brockholes Lane on to the main road is very difficult. Sometimes I cannot see the road because of high vehicles parked outside Rock Cottages so instead of turning right to go to Huddersfield I have to turn left then right into an industrial site and then left towards Huddersfield. The speed limit on main road is far too fast and seems to be ignored. Too many cars vans and lorries parked on the main road on the corner outside local sandwich shop | 1 | The answer to all your questions on page 4 is there is nothing pleasant or attractive about Brockholes village because the traffic is so bad. | 2 | Limited spaces for walks particularly for elderly. Apart from walking through the field off Smithy Place Lane toward Honley there is no where safe for elderly on their own. The field is always muddy and slippery and there are no seats for rest or to admire any views. The only walks I have for a lone elderly person are from Brockholes to Honley on the very busy and noisy main roads. Not at all pleasant | 2 | Village field always very muddy even for youngsters to play in | 2 | There are no amenities in Brockholes except for a pub. There used to be a post office but no more. If nondrivers want a post office you have to use a bus or a train into Holmfirth or Huddersfield. The footpath up to the village hall is full of pot holes and badly lit. Usually a lot of litter in the road in the station area. | 3 | 4 | 1 | 2 | 1 | Its not a safe place for the elderly because of the traffic. I never go out at night because it doesn't feel safe. Having had a car stolen from this road recently does cause concern. | 2 | No park or gardens facilities. Not enough refuse storage. Too far to the local tips. | 2 | How can we change things for the better or even keep things on an even keel when we have to continually object to the application to build 150 houses off Smithy Place Lane and Woodhead Road. This land is a greenfield site, If it is built on it is lost for ever. Every time planning application is refused the contractors apply again. We feel bullied by the construction company. 150 houses would mean an increase of approximately 300 cars. The roads and lanes are too narrow for the traffic we already have The local school is full and cannot even take the children who live here. The medical centres and dentistry is full. The drains in the village and particularly on the main road are not able to cope now when there has been an excess of rain. | TRAFFIC. 32 | 2022-03-03 | Brockholes | hd97e | 35 - 44 | male | Requested to via post | 5 | Brockholes has some excellent public footpaths. I do not cycle so cannot comment on this regard. The footpaths do suffer from dog-waste and dogpoo bag bins are always empty. Enforcement in this area needs to be undertaken. | 4 | I do not use public transport. | 4 | Parking in the various estates in the area is plentiful but the main road through Brockholes, especially along Rock Terrace and further up past River Holme Mews suffers from those parking on the road. Whilst in most cases this is unavoidable, re-painting the white line of the road centre to one side, to clearly indicate where cars should place themselves on the road would help. | 7 | Brockholes is a visually appealing area and has a good range of buildings construction over a broad period of time, as well as many open green spaces and natural features. | 6 | Within a few hundred metres of my home there are fields or woods which have footpaths going through them. | 5 | There is only one play area that I am aware of in the area; Brockholes Rec. This is generally quite well kept although it is a number of years since any investment has been made in the play equipment. I would hope that, if the prospective new-build development goes ahead, provision is made for a new play area in that development as part of the S106 requirements. | 4 | Whilst Brockholes is only a small village it has most things you could need; pub, shop, takeaway and petrol station. For anything that is missing, you have Honley close by or Holmfirth. | 5 | I have worked at a company in Honley for almost 20 years, so cannot comment specifically if Brockholes has any prospective employers. That being said, the advent of 'agile' working will no doubt improve the chance of those looking for work in the area. | 6 | I think the area has a good range of housing from shared ownership or registered provider houses to large detached houses and barns. I am concerned about the increased level of traffic in the area if the new-build proposal goes ahead and the additional strain this will put on Brockholes school. | 4 | I've lived in Brockholes for over 10 years and still haven't ventured into the Rock pub. I much prefer going into Honley or Holmfirth. We do use the Brockholes rec during Summer to meet other families and friends. I do feel this is a hugely under-used space and Summer fetes etc could be put on here quite easily. | 6 | Brockholes is an excellent place to live, the small FB groups sharing information on crime, lost belongings etc only goes to enforce this. | 5 | My family and I regularly walk around the area at all times of the year and don't feel unsafe. I have never seen any instances of crime personally. I am aware that car break-ins and thefts do occur but sadly this is not an issue of the area and is something in the Uk we have to simply accept. | 5 | Generally yes, buildings are well cared for and there is rarely any vacant house for a small period of time. Local footpaths would benefit from cleaning and weeding regularly. Dogmess is a particular problem on all the paths going to the school which is quite frankly disgusting and should be addressed. | 5 | Dogmess - common place, especially around school paths Road markings via the main road to segregate parked and moving cars Make better use of the Rec Clean and maintain footpaths | Investment needs making in these areas - dog enforcement and maintenance teams.

The bottom play ground on the field also could do with additional play equipment as my toddler cannot assess any of the equipment. | 5 | Tend to have to visit holmfirth or honley for food and shops. | 5 | 6 | 4 | There is no toddler group in the village and we have the space to do this with having churches and village halls. | 5 | 5 | The only crime we have experienced is at night people may go around and check car doors are locked. | 6 | 4

Many routes are flat and smooth therefore meeting demands for everyone. | 6 | Very frequent and reliable. Lots of bus stops meaning never have to walk far to your closest one. Affordable. | 4 | Never seem to be much traffic. Not much queuing. However, sometimes it can be difficult to get past due to insufficient parking on roadside houses therefore meaning they are having to park on road causing cars having to give way to oncoming traffic. | 6 | Passing through the area is always pleasant. A range of traditional and modern houses make it aesthetically pleasing. | 5 | Reasonable amount of green space such as field and parks ext. Natural green space is attractive and not badly affected by excessive noise or poor air quality. | 5 | Green fields for children to play. Places for leisure are accessible and within reasonable distance. Good education in the village with Brockholes Junior and Infant School. St Georges Church takes into account everyone with religious beliefs. | 5 | Fairly good amount of job opportunities for local people. Many different opportunities for local businesses to start up and grow. | 6 | Housing is definitely a positive feature of the village. 36 | 2022-03-06 | Brockholes | HD9 7A | 65 - 74 | female | 4 | I don't cycle but I don't think there are good quality routes for cyclists | 7 | 4 | Parking for the local primary school and increasingly for the train station can make things difficult for residents and for pedestrians. Future planning applications should take this into account | 5 | mostly. The environment on Oakes Avenue could do with improvement. And the rec off Oakes Avenue could be improved | 6 | there are lots of easily accessible walks. Opening up a riverside walk to Holmfirth would be great | 6 | the rec at the bottom of the village is fit for purpose. More could be made of the top rec off Oakes Avenue | 4 | Brockholes is limited in its amenities with a shop, a pub and a village hall. The closure of the post office and one of the local churches is likely to have had more of an impact on the older age group. Amenities for learning? More could be made of the local school and the village hall to encourage adult learning | 4 | Haven't got enough information on this | 5 | the housing in Brockholes has grown organically so there is a good range of types of housing. For instant kids cannot cross anywhere safely into Brockholes park. For cycling I would say it’s not safe at all as the roads are not wide enough for cars let alone bikes. | 3 | There is a train connection but not enough parking for people to access the train | 1 | Often dangerous situations around the local school as parents park inconsiderate and dangerous. This is unsafe for walking on the pavements but also for other drivers getting past. There is not enough parking at the train station and cars park on the street in front of residents houses on ridings fields and sometimes for weeks on end when going on holiday leaving their cars. 38 | 2022-03-06 | Brockholes | HD97B | 65 - 74 | female | 5 | Lots of off road paths, but some would benefit from having some work done to make them less waterlogged and muddy. Unfortunate building more houses will affect some of these routes. | 7 | We have a train station which is very convenient, I drive so I don’t use the busses. | 3 | Parking around the school area is very congested and makes it dangerous for pedestrians and other drivers as people are very inconsiderate as to where they park. Also it is very congested up by the train station with people parking up and going on the train, sonetim so leaving their cars for days, this makes it awkward to get into our drives. | 4 | Yes but planned building of more houses is going to spoil the area. | 4 | We can for the moment but some of the nice areas have been given planning permission to build houses which is appalling. | 5 | Could do with improvements | 5 | Could do with a bigger shop sticking more things, we only have a little paper shop or the garage half way to Honley. | 5 | We are only a small area, but would think it’s much the same as any small community. | 7 | 5 | Not really, only a pub and bowling club. There is a village hall which occasionally has something going on. | 6 | 5 | We have had quite a lot of car thefts and burgers recently. | 6 | 4 | People have had serious objection to building taking place in lovely field with wildlife such as deer, owls, bats, badgers and birds of prey, we objected but they are going ahead anyway. | Stop building more houses, the schools and roads won’t be able to cope and sort the parking out around the school and train station, better play equipment for the kids in the playground. | Stop giving planning permission for building, traffic wardens to police yellow lines down by the hairdressers and police to sort parking by the school.
| 2022-03-07 | Brockholes | HD9 7E | 55 - 64 | male | Because I care about the place I live | 5 | Walking is fine particularly in the beautiful countryside we have. Cycling is a bit tough because f the hills and dangerous because of traffic and the the lack of protected cycle lanes, | 6 | The train service is really valued but subject to cancellations due to lack of drivers. My youngest son uses the buses more and he finds them really good for getting in and out of Huddersfield and Holmfirth. We need better trains with tables and all with USB charging ports and wifi. | 5 | We live opposite the school so at certain times it can be tricky with no off road parking but there's not a lot the council can do about that. I'm annoyed by pavement parking which is not good for people with buggies on Brockholes Lane. The main issue is on the main road where exiting onto Woodhead Rd is difficult sometimes meaning you have to pull out quite a way to see if it is safe to make a turn | 6 | I don't use the park at all but it is a good facility to have. The countryside and walks are spectacular. I'm irritated by the "private land keep out" signs outside nearby woods that people have walked in for years before the signage went up. | 7 | We are blessed. We thought we know the area well before lockdown but during lockdown we got to know the area really well and discovered new walks nearby. There is a really good walking route into town from Brockholes which takes about an hour and 20 minutes with great views across the valley, through Stirley Farm and Newsome into town with only a bit of road walking. | 5 | My recreation is walking and that is pretty good. Holmfirth has the tennis club and cricket club. Brockholes has a bowling club and of course the running club so well provided for I guess | 4 | Lived in Brockholes 23 years but never really got to love The Rock as a place to drink or eat but then Holmfirth or Huddersfield has better alternatives. Honley Practice is a good doctors and he Honly Dentists are good also. Just the one shop in Brockholes but I never need to use it, School was great for our kids but they are all grown up now | 4 | There are local businesses in Brockholes but then apart from the units across woodhead rd it is not really a business hub | 4 | Difficult to say. The same issues in Brockholes probably mirror the rest of the country House prices too high, no security for private tenants, not enough social housing | 5 | village Hall, Churches pub | 7 | I love living in Brockholes. Very peaceful | 6 | Occasional crime issues arise | 5 | Drains and gutters could do with more regular maintenance | 4 | I know all the local Kirklees Cllrs but then I am a Cllr myself. | Traffic calming on Brockholes Lane Clearing the drains Traffic calming on Woodhead Rd | Traffic calming on Woodhead Rd
| 2022-03-07 | Brockholes | HD9 7B | 25 - 34 | female | I was invited to do so | 6 | Walking is fairly easy, less so with young children but that’s mainly due to the just main road through the village | 4 | I cannot comment on bus services as I don’t use them, but it is handy to have the train station in the village. I used it to commute to work (now work from home) and found it to be okay. If I had an important meeting I would drive instead as I couldn’t fully rely on the service and when it failed it failed miserably - trains breaking down and the next one would be an hour away. | 5 | Driving near the school at drop off time is tricky and parking is not easy but other than that I cannot complain about parking. It may be useful for Rock Terrace to have designated parking to free up the main road as that can be a bottle neck. | 4 | There isn’t a village centre as such and there is a high number of industrial buildings which are not attractive to look at. There are attractive buildings such as the church though. | 7 | We are lucky to live near the campsite and there are some lovely walk through the woods. I am not aware of other footpaths in the area though. | 6 | There is a decent park in Brockholes that the kids like to use. | 5 | There aren’t many amenities in Brockholes - really just a pub, church, corner shop and sandwich shop, but we can access other amenities in Honley and Holmfirth. | 4 | I don’t know to be honest- I couldn’t find my type of work around here but there are businesses nearby so some people work here. | 6 | There is a good selection of houses of different sizes. The prices are higher than can be found in other areas of Huddersfield but that reflects the desirability of the area. | 3 | I don’t know of anywhere to meet people in Brockholes. I believe there used to be a parent and baby group at the village hall but I don’t know if that is still going. | 6 | I feel I belong in Brockholes having lived in the area for nearly 5 years. The people and friendly and I have had nothing but good experiences with the place and people. | 6 | I feel safe here and think it is a place people would look out for you. The missing score is that I don’t feel the main road is particularly safe for children as it is busy with a fairly narrow pavement and cars drive close to the pavement. | 5 | The spaces seem to be well cared for but there doesn’t appear to have been any major investment recently in public spaces. | 4 | I haven’t needed to do so so it would be difficult to comment. Lots of local issues are discussed on the Holmfirth Community social media sites and I feel I could get help or an answer from there. | Road maintenance could be better, but that is the case across Kirklees. More parking in the village would be useful and could free up some of the roads for traffic to move better. | Investment from Kirklees. Acquisition or allocation of land for parking?
| 2022-03-07 | Brockholes | HD9 7A | 55 - 64 | female | Community consultation | 3 | Walking is relatively easy to do for the able-bodied, however, the area is on a hill and therefore has many steep climbs. Some roads are narrow, and do not have continuous pavements, which is dangerous. Some roads are crowded with parked cars, especially Brockholes Lane, which creates difficulty of access for pedestrians, especially parents with small children. The roads have not been built with cyclists in mind. Due to obstructed lines of sight on junctions and bends, cycling is quite a dangerous activity. | 6 | Close access to a railway station was one of the main reasons we moved to the village. My son is a student at Barnsley College and I prefer to take the train and leave my car at home whenever possible. The railway station is a key asset of Brockholes, although unfortunately parking is an issue for people living outside the immediate area. Trains are modern, with toilets on board. The ticketing system is very convenient. The bus routes are good, but the fares are expensive. | 2 | Traffic and lack of parking areas present significant issues for the village. Brockholes Lane is always blocked at the start where it connects to New Mill Road, with delivery vans always parked on double yellow lines, as there are no alternatives for them. Lack of parking for the school means that during school run hours, there are cars all the way up Brockholes Lane, as well as Oakes Lane. There is no parking near the train station, as the land was sold for housing development some years ago. There are dangerous areas where traffic emerges to turn on to New Mill road, where visibility of oncoming traffic is a problem. | 4 | The village is very attractive, with the recreation ground at the centre of the village. It is well used, mostly in the summer, but is very muddy in winter. The Methodist Church is an imposing building that should be protected, now that the church itself has closed. | 5 | Brockholes has direct access to a network of footpaths that lead to woods and open countryside. Some of the land is privately owned and not well maintained. The trees are being strangled by rampant ivy. The natural spaces are home to a wide variety of wildlife including deer, birds, foxes and of course badgers. It is important to protect this wildlife, which is something that local people appreciate and are proud of. Improvements could be made in terms of signposting of footpaths and information about circular routes for walkers. These areas are not easily accessible for people with mobility issues. | 5 | The recreation ground at the centre of the village is a great asset, it is used by a wide range of people of all ages. My teenage children like to play rounders in the summer. There is a play area, and football posts which are frequently in use and appreciated by local families. There is also a smaller area off Oakes Avenue, but this is probably more likely to be used by residents within the immediate vicinity. | 4 | Brockholes village has a pub, small grocery shop, hairdresser, takeaway and mortgage broker. The post office closed about 2 years ago, which is a shame. In days gone by, there were more facilities and shops available to the community - their loss is a shame for the community. It would be nice if these things would make a comeback, so that residents could have the opportunity to shop locally. The demise of the Methodist Church represents an opportunity to create facilities that would benefit the local community. I hope it is not sold and turned into residential accommodation, or a carpet outlet. It would be great to be able to access funding to reimagine the space as for example: rehearsal space; theatre; coffee bar; post office; village shop; art gallery; a space for playgroups, youth club or yoga class - several functions could be accommodated within this space. | 4 | There are several industrial areas close by, and only a few small businesses within the village, providing limited opportunities for local employment. | 5 | There is a good balance of housing types within the area, from very large detached properties, to Victorian terraced houses providing accommodation at pretty much every level, including privately owned, council owned and private rental properties. There are several areas where bungalows predominate so that retired people with mobility issues are able to stay within the community. Of greater concern is the proposed development off Smithy Place, which will impact traffic circulation in that area due to problems of access. | 2 | There are not really many facilities for social interaction. The pub, the remaining church and the village hall are currently the main facilities available. | 4 | There is quite a strong sense of identity within the village. Stories and photographs are regularly shared on social media, mostly relating to families that have lived in the are for several generations and have witnessed significant changes. The village trust (BVT) organises regular events that celebrate particular aspects of local history, and they should be supported by Kirklees and the parish council to continue to do this. | 4 | Personal safety is not too much of an issue, I am not aware of any violent crimes taking place in the area. However theft of trade vehicles has very recently presented a serious issue. | 5 | Generally speaking, Brockholes is quite clean and tidy. However, dog mess is an issue frequently mentioned on local social media sites. The BVT organises regular litter picks and always recoups very large amounts, so this is an area for improvement. One street in particular, Oakes Avenue, has a reputation locally for being unkempt, with large items of unwanted furniture and rubbish in the street and people's front gardens. | 3 | I think there is a degree of apathy among the local community when it comes to decision making. There are many local residents who volunteer and run initiatives, but they are in the minority. I think that this could be addressed through modern means of communication, such as social media, and it requires an imaginative approach in order to engage people and hold their attention. | *. Traffic management is probably the top priority in order to improve the local environment. *. Protect and enhance the Methodist Church, which is a major asset for the village. It could be put to great use, through funding and imaginative initiatives that could serve the community. https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2021/dec/31/churches-banks-serve-beer-community-legacy *. Enhancing footpaths and signage to provide better access to outdoor natural spaces * Prevention of crime, perpetrated by people from outside the area | *. Access to funding. Appointing professional project managers to implement imaginative ideas drawn from the community. *. Plenty of woodland but accessibility difficult because of steep hillside and narrow footpaths. | 4 | 4 | Post office very much missed | 4 | 3 | No sheltered housing. 43 | 2022-03-08 | Brockholes | HD9 7B | 65 - 74 | male | community consultation | 5 | Walking is very good here. Cycling has vitually no provision but given the geography I have no idea how this could be improved. | 6 | Public transport seems to be well organised but I seldom use it | 5 | Very few traffic issues in Brockholes, although persuading more people to walk their children to and from school would be a benefit. Griting is frequently required in winter and is always carried out promptly. Making the triangle around the green one way would make Brockholes Lane safer. Repairing the numerous potholes would be good. | 4 | Brockholes is not the prettiest of villages, the lack of a centre or focal point does not help. Maybe some public art? | 7 | Varios walks available from Brockholes, along the river, by the railway to Thurstonland, through the woods to Honley or Hall Ing | 5 | Plenty of open space, the recreation ground and woodlands. Not so much for the teenagers. | 4 | Not many facilities in Brockholes, a trip to Holmfirth is usually required | 5 | Quite a lot of businesses in the area for a small village | 5 | New house planning has few affordable options and little to attract older people to downsize. Older people do not want starter homes. | 4 | 4 | Brockholes does not have the same sense of identity as Honley or Holmfirth | 6 | 6 | 5 | This helps | Trying to engender a better sense of community, maybe a fete on the recreation ground Resurfacing some of the worst roads would give a better feel to the village | stated on previous question

| 2022-03-09 | Brockholes | HD97A | 65 - 74 | male | To complete questionnaire | 4 | I cannot comment about the ease of cycling as I don't cycle. There are some good pavements and footpaths. The zebra crossing and the pelican crossing are good. I often walk through Smithy Place and for part of Smithy Place Lane there is no footpath and this is a very hazardous road for both drivers and walkers alike. It was a point I made as part of my objections to the proposed house building off Robinson Lane. | 5 | I am fortunate in being able to drive and my comment and rating must be taken in this context. I have a senior concessionary bus pass and do use public transport from time to time including the 314 and 316 which runs through the village centre as well as the minibuses to Holmfirth and Meltham. I have a senior railcard and use the train regularly for trips to Huddersfield and beyond. The train can be late and recently there have been cancellations due to driver shortages which makes planning difficult if you have deadlines to meet. | 1 | Again my rating and comments should be taken in context. I live across from the village school and traffic and parking are both very problematic as a consequence. My home is on Wood Farm Lane which is unadopted and therefore provides access only to the properties on it. It is regularly used however, particularly at the start and end of the school day for turning, waiting and parking. I am unaffected by the turning issues but I know neighbours have their drives used for turning regularly. Brockholes Lane is used for parking throughout the day by both residents and visitors. This makes access from and to Wood Farm Lane very difficult. For most of its length Brockholes Lane is effectively a single track road due to all the parked cars. Cars often park on the blind corner outside numbers 52, 54,56 and 58 which adds to the danger for all users of the road. The accident involving the runaway vehicle that smashed through the wall of one home on the corner and demolished part of property (thankfully by good fortune none of the properties occupants were hurt physically) should serve as a warning of the danger of this corner. | 4 | The local 'recks' are nice greens spaces. I have noticed an increase in the amount of dog dirt on local pavements around the village. There has been a reported increase in the number of people owning a dog and it could be that those leaving dog mess make up a small minority of local dog owners. I am not able to understand the mentality of dog owners who pick up and bag their dog's dirt then leave the plastic bag in a variety of places nearby rather than disposing of it in suitable way. | 6 | For a rural village I think we have access to some nice green spaces. | 5 | I don't really expect that many of such opportunities in such a small village. There are activities at the Village Hall some of which I have attended and enjoyed particularly the illustrated talks by a variety of speakers organised by the Village Hall Committee. I no longer have young children needing to play so it is for others to comment in this regard. | 4 | No I need to travel beyond the village for some of these things but I would expect to do so. A small village like Brockholes can't, in my opinion, be expected to have all the facilities you list. The Rock is a nice friendly pub which I frequent from time to time. I prefer eating and drinking as opposed to just drinking so while they do serve food there at certain times of the year the Travellers Rest provides for my needs in this regard. | 4 | I am retired but was fortunate to be able to work locally for most of my working life. There are employment opportunities within the village but I am unable really to comment on this area of questioning so take my 4 rating as a neutral. | 2 | In common with many areas what is needed is affordable housing which is only available to first time buyers. The new development on Lancaster Lane house properties starting a prices above £500,000. While these are apparently selling they are not within the price range of most young people who may want to live and buy property in the area. House builders can make more money selling more expensive properties. | 4 | The Village Hall is a good place for meeting and the Rock Inn should you so desire. The Anglican Church still holds services but the Methodist Church has closed. | 6 | I have lived in Brockholes for nearly 45 years and feel I belong here. There are resources available for people who are interested in finding more about it's history. There have been a number of events which have helped in this regard. | 4 | The perception of this is a very personal thing. Someone I know recently had their car taken from outside their home so their perception of crime in the arae is very different to mine. | 4 | This varies. My own property would benefit from some maintenance. | 4 | People can access their Parish Councillor or any of our Kirklees Councillors if they want to raise issues. | Local parking problems, dog fouling, lack of affordable housing. | I suspect none as attempts have been made to improve these in the past. Sometime there is a short term improvement re parking. The school tries it's best but they cannot even provide sufficient on site parking to accommodate the staff employed at the school and the pre-school. It was possible more on-site parking would help. I think the dog poo bag dispensers were useful but these don't seem to be refilled anymore for whatever reason. I saw an empty one recently with a bag filled with dog poo just pushed into the place where the bags are kept. A speed limit outside the school and parking restrictions on the corner I have mentioned may help. Nationally an increase in the number of avoidable houses that builders are compelled to build as part of their developments. I am hestitant to suggest speed bumps as the various potholes on the roads aleady shake my car and me enough. They may help however.
| 2022-03-09 | Brockholes | HD9 7E | 45 - 54 | female | Request | 6 | No cycling routes close by. | 1 | Very expensive for a family or young people to travel. I like travelling on public transport. However, it is expensive and unreliable. This includes buses and trains. The buses tend to only cater for the elderly as too expensive for youngsters. It is appalling that it is cheaper for my family to get a taxi to Holmfirth or Wakefield instead of using public transport. Buses and the Huddersfield bus station often feels unsafe due to anti social behaviour. The train platforms on the Penistone line have been extended to cope with trains with 3 carriages. However, only 2 carriages are the norm. Even when large events such as football are happening. The trains are overcrowded with limited seating. The trains often break down. I don't feel that we need more frequent trains. Just more reliable with more carriages. It would appear that we receive older trains from elsewhere. Parking for the railway station in Brockholes is an issue. And would become more so if we had an increased number of trains. In the South of the country there are cheaper fares on a weekend. At present there are limited incentives for people to travel by public transport. Young people have to pay out a disproportionate amount of their income on public transport when in low paid employment or traineeships. | 1 | I live close to the school and at peak times it is very unsafe due to the volume of traffic and the lack of parking. The train station can also cause issues with parking. Residents own too many cars for onstreet parking. The vehicles are getting larger causing more issues. Planning permission for new build 78a resulted in the loss of x2 on street parking places to enable a further drive way. It is very difficult to exit Brockholes due to the junctions with poor visibility and the volume of traffic on the main road. This will continue to increase as more housing is built. Traffic calming measures would be appreciated. 20 mph zone at the school. Creation of additional parking for those working at the school. A drop off zone for parents with adults to collect the children to reduce congestion. Permit parking on Brockholes lane with 1 car allowed per household. | 6 | Many positive features such as the rec and the village hall and the train station. The walks along the river and to Thurstonland | 6 | Natural space is good. With a great variety of fields and woodland to explore. Due to the terrain some places will be difficult to access for some with limited mobility. Negatives: - Increase in litter in natural spaces over the past two years. - Negative impact of mountain bikers on local paths travelling at speed and taking walkers by suprise. Also difficult to pass on single track paths, such as by the railway. | 6 | The village would benefit from an increased sense of local community. More events such as a gala perhaps using the rec. Youth clubs and fitness activities for all abilities using the village hall. | 7 | Access to amenities are poor. This is increased if you do not drive. Most things such as G.P. chemist and fitness centres are in Honley or Holmfirth and transport is expensive. The village hall could be utalised more. | 4 | I don't feel that there are opportunities for local buisnesses to start up and grow. Job opportunities appear to be limited to low paid work with people commuting for higher paid work. | 1 | Rented housing is expensive and in undesirable locations. Lack of modest affordable housing. Very difficult for young people to save and buy in the area. New developments appear to focus on large family properties without the infrastructure to support. Lack of consideration for housing for single people. Too much building in local fields reducing the amount of green spaces. | 4 | The village hall is under utalised by the whole community. There is a lack of mixing. | 5 | I feel connected to neighbours but not particulary part of the community. I am not really aware of any local groups. Brockholes does not appear that diverse. | 5 | I generally feel safe at home and out. Sometimes property crime appears to increase. | 5 | I am not aware of a local residents organisation. Recycling facilities involve travelling in a car. | 1 | I am not aware of any groups that are interested in listening to residents. I am concerned by the increase in building and the traffic. It is ruining the environment and safety of the residents. | Improved and affordable public transport. Traffic reduction. Affordable suitable housing for young /single and couples. | Cheaper transport for all. Improved prospect of reliability of buses and trains. 3 carraiges on the train. Consideration for car parking for commuters. Incentives to travel such as reduced charges on the weekend. Although there are a variety of passes they are expensive and confusing re when they can be used. Reduced rates for young people on low incomes. Transport costs are too high a proportion of limited income. Cheap flat rates as in London would be great. A drop off zone for driving parents. This could be arranged voluntarily or by the school staff or both. They could collect the children and walk a group of children to the school. Perhaps outside the methodist church. 20mph limit outside the school. Parking permits for 1 car per household in areas where onstreet parking is required. Currently and in future issues re charging electric vehicles. Encourage builders to build dwellings suitable for smaller households. Support young people to access affordable properties in the area. Consider alternatives to traditional building for accommodation.

Please note I am a walker and horse rider not a cyclist - why were horse riders not included in the question? | 6 | More frequent or more capacity on trains at busy times would be good. | 6 | Too much traffic on smithy place lane (which has no pavements and is narrow with blind bends). No nearby better alternatives for cross valley travel | 7 | 7 | 6 | 6 | 3 | 6 | 5 | a lack of non licensed social space in Brockholes, a cafe would be nice | 6 | 6 | 5 | pretty good overall but a recycling centre in the village would be good | 4 | Had good experience of dialog with councillors and MP but otherwise not. | Conservation of our green space, encourage woodland and farmland to be used for farming and forestry, to provide sustainable jobs and preserve the local environment. | Support and assist small local businesses such as forestry, all farming and small holderings, and low impact businesses cider making, bee keeping etc

| 2022-03-10 | Brockholes | HD9 7B | 65 - 74 | female | Related to community consultation. | 2 | Certain footpaths are neglected - even along the main road. I often try to walk along the road to the Spar shop from the centre of Brockholes and find some parts of the pavement difficult and potentially hazardous. The section from JTD to Spar is rutted soil/mud and slopes so that keeping your footing is not easy. The areas around JTD are also not easy to walk on and there is an area at the turn into Silver Birches which is often waterlogged - forcing me to have to walk in the road. I have to confess that I would not attempt this walk if it was icy. Another issue (which may be beyond the ambit of what Kirklees can do) is pavement parking where cars are parked wholly or partially blocking the pavement making it hazardous for pedestrians who are often forced to walk in the road. Finally, Smithy Place Lane is quite difficult to walk along safely as there is no pavement for pedestrians and cars often drive down there very fast. | 4 | Difficult to comment on this as I have avoided public transport as much as possible in recent years. However, I would like more trains on the Penistone line in both directions once things get back to "normal". | 3 | Please maintain the roads to an acceptable standard they are not at the moment. Parking at Brockholes station has always been an issue but not during the pandemic. I fear that people moving to new housing developments will drive rather than walk to the station if they are in a hurry rather than using the opportunity for a healthy stroll up the steep hill in the morning as part of their exercise regime! Another issue (which may be beyond the ambit of what Kirklees can do) is pavement parking where cars are parked wholly or partially blocking the pavement making it hazardous for pedestrians who are often forced to walk in the road. Some people do drive too fast in the village off the main road which can be dangerous when children are coming out of school. This is also the case on Smithy Place Lane. Parking on the main road close to the 2 junctions causes problems with cars frequently parking on double yellow lines. Parking near the school can cause problems for residents at the start and end of the school day. | 4 | The village hall is well maintained and provides a good facility for residents to use. Road surfaces are very poorly maintained and need attention. It can be hard to use certain areas in inclement weather e.g. Brockholes Lane when the drains are blocked. | 6 | There are some nice walks in the area by the river and through the woods. Sometimes, there are problems with discarded rubbish which spoil things. Footpath signs not always as clear as they could be. | 5 | I don't think that there is enough provision for young adults in the Village. Additionally there are no groups for the elderly. The recreation areas offer good open spaces for children to run around but they might have to avoid rubbish left in the area. | 5 | Shopping is limited in the village. We have a small village shop and a local Spar garage along the road. Generally sufficient for our needs. Classes and groups run in the Village Hall for health and relaxation. Post Office provision is a major problem. | 4 | I think that there seems to be a lot of small firms in the valley but I am not sure about how they operate. Perhaps we should have an event in the Village Hall to advertise what is available locally and to enable firms to advertise what they do. | 4 | Sadly, it seems that housing developments are driven by profit motives rather than housing needs. It would be useful if priority was given to smaller properties including bungalows which might enable more people to stay in the area. At the moment, new developments tend to be larger properties. There is rented accommodation available which is a help for the community. | 6 | The Village Hall is a useful space for the community to use. It is used by people of all ages but it would be nice if more people were involved in promoting and organising its use. The new boules court should also provide more scope for recreation. There is also the Neiley Pavilion and nearby cricket clubs. Our local pubs are also an important social amenity. | 5 | I think that Brockholes has always struggled with its identity as it falls between Honley and Holmfirth - neither of which completely include Brockholes in events. I do like living here as the people are friendly and I think that most care about the area. It would be good if we could keep our identity of separation from the other villages. | 6 | I do feel safe here but I find the street lighting on side roads quite poor which makes me more hesitant to go out at night on my own. | 4 | Recycling facilities are not easily available to people without cars. I do hope that Kirklees is going to improve its general policy in this area. Generally green, grey and brown bin collections are very well organised although I don't find the reporting system for missed collections very helpful or responsive. I am aware of the problem of dog mess and must admit that this would mean that I might avoid walking in badly lit areas in the evening! It must also cause problems for families trying to use the recreation areas. There isn't an effective association for local residents - the main function of the Brockholes Village Trust is to run the village hall for the benefit of residents and so perhaps another group could be formed. | 4 | I do not feel involved in the decision making processes on issues such as planning or how money is spent in the area as much as I might like. I know that I can make comments on planning proposals but generally feel that very little weight is given to the views of local people and that asking for comments is merely a "tick box" aspect of the process. On other local issues, I tend to put up with things rather than complain! Perhaps we need a local group which might meet to consider local issues and to make suggestions to the Council. | Making the area a safe and pleasant place to live for people of all ages and backgrounds. Making sure that the facilities in the area are well maintained. Encouraging people (including myself) to be proactive rather than reactive. | This is difficult because I am not sure what actions would be possible! Certainly more money spent on maintaining roads/pavements in the area. Perhaps applying a speed limit in the area near the school. More checks by the Council on rubbish discarded in the area.
| 2022-03-10 | Brockholes | HD9 7B | 65 - 74 | male | Chair of Village Trust and interested resident | 3 | Good public footpath network for recreational walking Very poor for safe cycling routes, especially along valley to Huddersfield & Holmfirth Unacceptable use of public footpaths by recreational cyclists. Surfaces become impassable and for older people especially, some sections become difficult and potentially dangerous because of damage caused. Need barriers to restrict illegal use. Limited maintenance leading to poor signage on some local paths (within 3 mile radius) and along main roads where footpaths are narrow eg Brockholes to Honley. | 4 | Decent choice and frequency of buses. Poor (if any) development strategy and plan for improving rail services and parking facilities for those who drive to Brockholes station in order to commute. No timetables at bus stops. Why? Not everyone has a mobile phone or timetable app. This disadvantages sector of population, especially older groups as well as recreational walkers using bus service to return to base. No cycle storage at station to promote active travel/ use of public transport | 4 | Abuse of parking restrictions on main road, particularly at entrance to Brockholes Lane. Requires regular enforcement to prevent potential hazards in exiting side streets. Need for traffic calming on Brockholes Lane, especially on section past school - rumble strips + 20mph needed. Introduction of one way system up Brockholes Lane should be investigated, costed and consulted upon. The housing proposal by Miller Homes must be refused due to inability to provide safe pedestrian access into the village. | 3 | Listed boundary marker, Rock Terrace. One of 4 Grade 2 listed buildings/structures in Brockholes. Requires painting and the lettering highlighting. Legal responsibility of KC (Highways) to maintain. Over 15 years of dialogue with local ward members and highway officers. Small effort needed to restore. Leaving as is makes it vulnerable. | 3 | Miller Homes proposals will result in loss of a key natural asset and restrict wildlife along river corridor. Biodiversity Net Gain policy adopted by Council should be applied and closely monitored if development ever approved. Similar monitoring required for controversial sites of River Holme View, currently being developed. | 5 | 5 | 5 | 4 | There will be little relationship between proposed housing off Woodhead Road and the community in general if current proposals are approved as a result of poor pedestrian links and reliance on private transport. | 6 | 5 | 5 | 3 | Long term issue regarding riverside path and legal ownership. Requires positive action by KC to acquire land from Crown to prevent fly tipping and encroachment from adjacent housing. Poor management of drainage issues further up Brockholes Lane. Long-raised issue of totally blocked drains and failure by Council to adequately deal with problem. No local recycling facility. | 5 | Previous response to questionnaire indicate several areas where KC officer response has been limited over a long period of time. The long protests regarding the allocation of housing land which were subsequently ignored in approval of the LDF and the more recent approval of planning applications has resulted in a range of issues currently frustrating both the community and the developers, highlighting the fact that some issues should have been considered at a much earlier stage. | Refusal of Miller Homes as no footway possible. Drainage improvements/unblocking on Brockholes Lane Restriction of bikes on local footpaths Traffic calming on Brockholes Lane and enforcement at junction with New Mill Road Restoration of listed boundary marker
| 2022-03-10 | Brockholes | HD9 7B | 55 - 64 | female | 4 | I don't cycle but walk with my dog a lot. There are plenty areas to walk around the village that are both attractive and accessable and also not close to the roads. Some require work done on the pathways which are collapsing due to the river. This is probably not safe. The cyclists are ploughing up the walkways with their off road bikes. They are rude, abusive and pushy and my dog is scared to death of them. I don't think they should be allowed on the narrow wood and riverside walks as they ruin the paths. They ride in gangs on the roads blocking up the narrow roads as well. Since the Tour de France came here we have been invaded by cyclists who totally ignore the highway code and do what they like. Trying to pass 25 cyclists going slowly and chatting on a narrow road makes motorists angry and take risks. They need more purely cyclist routes. They also don't ride in the cycle lanes even when they are there! | 6 | Brockholes is well served by train and bus links. There is a lack of parking by the station and it's annoying to have people park outside your house and over your drive. I live by the station. The roads are in poor condition due to the cars up there and the markings need redone. People really could walk easily from the village but they are just lazy. Both bus and trains are quite expensive but that is due to the cost of running these in this time. | 2 | There are too many cars and traffic is bad around the school area. Parking on the pavements is really bad for mums with kids and prams. The roads are not able to provide for multiple car parking and there is nowhere for residents either. It's an old village with narrow roads and there is nothing can be done really. People should walk to school if they live in the village but they just don't. The school parking needs policed at in and out times. We don't need calming measure as that would make the road even worse for residents. If you live here accept that the roads are narrow and that isn't going to change. | 5 | Brockholes is a pretty village and well looked after by most. Living here means you accept it as the village it is and learn to live with it's quirks. The building plans for hundreds of houses however is not OK. It's making the valley one huge conglumerate and means the village is losing it's identity. It also can't support that number of extra people and the wildlife is vanishing under the diggers. | 5 | The natural spaces are vanishing rabidly as the builders more in and dig up the valley and take up the space where wildlife thrives. | 5 | There are things for the younger age group. Teenagers are uncontrolled and vandalise a lot of the facilities. I have witnessed this. I don't have young children anymore so can't really comment | 3 | There is little in the way of facilities and amenities in the near vicinity of Brockholes however there is plenty within 5 miles which support everything I need. This may not be ideal for everyone if they don't drive however there is public transport | 4 | It's a village so most of those statements don't apply. I'm retired now but always travelled to work outside the village. | 4 | It's an expensive area so I doubt it caters for everyone. Only people who would want a specific lifestyle would move here. They should stop building in this area and respect the greenspace - all the villages along the valley are merging in to one and losing their unique identity. We don't have the infrastructure to support hundreds of extra houses and residents | 4 | There are plenty opportunities if wanted for social contact. It's up to people to choose if they want to use them. People are friendly and do mix quite a lot. | 5 | I moved her 27 years ago from Scotland but I do think Brockholes has a strong identity. Everyone seems very accepting of different members of the community. There are quite a few social events in the village hall which are well attended. A lot of people have however moved here but they do respect the local history and are equally involved in events like remembrance day. | 4 | I don't feel that safe out at night. I see evidence of burglary and vandalism a lot. There is no police presence at all ever here and we get too many people creeping around at night looking at peoples homes. There are too many cold callers around and they can be abusive when told you don't want anything. There can be issues with people on the train station. There is a lot of littering and a lot of dog mess around. | 5 | The area is reasonably well cared for. The roads however are in poor condition with potholes and blocked drains. It's hard to clean the road sides due to so many parked cars. There is a lot of litter but we do have a wonderful chap who comes twice a week to clean the streets. He deserves a medal. There is a lot of dog mess around and it is disgusting that people don't clear up. A few more fines are needed to hammer the message home. Recycling and waste collection is reliable however you need to travel to recycle glass. I don't think there is a residents association | 4 | I don't really feel able to comment on this as I don't know. | Stop the building of houses in the villages. The greenspaces need to be kept. Improve the road conditions Tackle the dog mess problems Have more policing of the local areas so people feel safe. Maintain the walkways and ban cyclists from using the narrow footpaths | self explanatory
| 2022-03-10 | Brockholes | HD9 7E | 55 - 64 | male | Resident interest | 3 | A616 very busy, poor pedestrian crossing positions, parking on Rock Terrace is creating very dangerous conditions. | 7 | Rail, bus and taxis are good in this area | 1 | no dedicated parking areas, Rock Terrace A616 street parking obscures both Oakes Lane and Brockholes Lane junctions. School time vehicles park up Oakes Lane which has just moved the problem | 4 | The park behind Rock Terrace is a lovely green space. However; entrances on the Brockholes Lane side are not easy to use for young children. | 7 | Local woods and nature trails easily accessible. | 6 | Two parks are good. | 6 | Holmfirth and Honley have GP and Dental practices and restaurants. Three pub/restaurants in the village. However; new build estates are planned to begin immenantly between Brockholes and Honley and the school places are limited throughout the valley. Traffic will increase, further compounding safety and parking. | 3 | Mainly hospitality jobs. Commuting is necessary, which attracts many people from around the country. | 4 | Not much "affordable" family homes. | 3 | Limited access to church and village halls. Outdoor spaces good, but not conducive to meeting "new" people.. No regular indoor facilities for kids I am aware of. e.g. youth clubs. Holmfirth has many facilities which are near. | 7 | Both my wife and I were born in the Holme Valley hospital. We have lived in thge valley all our lives and have many friends and family here. Including school friends fro 44 years ago. Good community spirit generally. | 7 | We were burgled 3 years ago, but not made us feel unsafe. | 7 | Some properties owned by the council on Okes Avenue have poorly/un-maintained gardens. Otherwise, a good area to live. | 4 | I do feel that residents concerns on planning desisions are not given enough credance. | Road safety improvements by lack of off street parking on the A616. Pressure on services, roads. e.g. school places increased traffic from new estates. Better facilities for Youth. | Double yellow lines at junctions on A616 for 20 metres, controlled school drop off zones. Ensure developers are forced to provide additional school places and road funding, commensurate to the population increase anticipated. This would also include funding for youth services.
| 2022-03-10 | Brockholes | HD97A | 45 - 54 | female | Community consultation | 5 | There are plenty of footpaths and lanes all around but some aren’t very well maintained. | 4 | The single track train on the Pennistone line can cause massive delays, but it is still brilliant to have a local train station. Also the Pennistone line is rather pleasant for its smallness and friendly community feel among passengers and in stations. More investment / improvement of it would make the whole area a lot more appealing. | 1 | I live on Smithy Place Lane which is a perfectly lovely country lane when it’s quiet, but it is all too often ruined by being used as a rat-run between the Woodhead Road and New Mill Road during rush hour each morning and evening. It is such a shame when beautiful, small rural lanes that are such a signature feature of this valley are over-used by heavy traffic. | 6 | Brockholes is generally a lovely and picturesque place though the local shop and some of the businesses on New Mill Road overshadow the beauty of the landscape and old buildings with a rather industrial look and feel. Getting around is easy though and it feels very safe and welcoming. | 7 | This is one thing Brockholes has plenty of at the moment and that is a large part of why I moved here. I sincerely hope it stays that way, and that we can avoid a push for mass residential development in this area. | 6 | 2 | There are practically no amenities in Brockholes itself but we are near enough to many to get by. It was very sad to lose our local post office a few years ago, and our corner shop isn’t great. | 3 | This village is an odd mix of residential and industrial. The local building trade retailers and stone and paving merchants seem to doing well enough but that has little to do with my day to day life. | 7 | There is a perfect mix here of smaller less expensive homes and huge, impressive farm houses here. I personally prefer the older buildings and find some of the newer local developments not terribly in keeping with the look and feel of the valley, but that’s just me. | 7 | I joined the village trust my first year here. We many not have a lot of shared spaces to hang about in in this small village, but we find a way to meet up and chat. | 6 | 7 | 4 | There seem to be spaces along the river path where ne’er-do-wells go to litter / fly tip, which is tragic in such an otherwise lovely setting. The village Trust do what we can to organise regular litter picks but more could and should be done. | 6 | I would hate to see the development plans for 146 houses on the field adjacent to Woodhead Road be approved. This would totally spoil our lovely small community and destroy an invaluable wildlife corridor. | Planners should reject the proposal for quite such a huge development (application number 2021/62/92206/W) in such a small village. Fewer houses with more wild space retained space seems like the only sensible approach to development here.
| 2022-03-11 | Brockholes | HD9 7E | 65 - 74 | female | 4 | There are many and varied footpaths around Brockholes for those who like to walk. Shopping and essential services are generally accessed by car because of the distances involved. Cycling is an option for those who are fit enough to cope with the challenging topography and busy roads - vehicular traffic normally takes priority, there is little provision for cyclists. | 3 | Bus services are reasonably regular during the day but more restricted at night. Routes are limited so it is difficult to move quickly and easily between the valleys. Very few stops have shelters, service provision is not always clearly available. The Penistone line is useful to get to Huddersfield or travel towards Sheffield but facilities for cyclists are limited at stations and on trains, parking is extremely limited at local stations. Bus fares are comparatively higher than train fares. | 4 | Cars take priority in this semi rural area, traffic has increased hugely in recent years, particularly in relation to new development in areas poorly served by public transport. On-road parking can be limited because roads are narrow and many older properties do not have garages. Around Brockholes Primary school, parking and pedestrian safety is a problem at the start and end of the school day. There are no traffic calming measures in Brockholes. | 4 | There are many beautiful wild areas and patches of woodland around Brockholes. Local recreation areas are well used but have limited facilities and are not always well maintained. | 5 | For the able bodied, there are many attractive walks in and around Brockholes, including along the River Holme. However, many footpaths are inaccessible for those with limited mobility or pushchairs. There is only limited seating available on most routes. Litter has increased in recent years. Footpaths are not always well maintained by landowners and some popular routes are increasingly used by cyclists. | 3 | There are two recreation areas in Brockholes though the park off Oakes Avenue is less accessible to the rest of the village. The rec in the village centre has limited facilities and can often be marred by litter and dog poo. Access to/from Brockholes Lane does not always feel safe as the steps emerge directly on to the road with limited visibility for pedestrians and road users. There are no obvious facilities for children and teenagers in the village though sports clubs, gyms and other activities can be found in Honley, Thongsbridge and Holmfirth, a short drive away. A limited number of activities take place at Brockholes Village Hall . | 2 | Brockholes lies between larger villages and the town of Holmfirth. It has few facilities for leisure, education, shopping etc, these are accessed elsewhere. | 5 | As far as I am aware, the majority of people commute to other areas for work. | 3 | There seem to be very few properties either for sale or for rent available in the price bracket which can be afforded by younger people. Too many developments in recent years have been permitted where 3-4-5 bedrooms are the norm, reducing the variety and availability of properties for first time buyers and young single people. | 4 | There are limited spaces for people to meet in Brockholes: two local pubs, St George’s Church and the Village Hall. The new boules court at the village hall is a welcome addition. The village hall is used by pre/after school club, for some regular groups and classes, as well as occasional talks and events organised by the Village Trust. Additional funding to enable hall maintenance and improvement would be welcome and valuable and would help to ensure continued community use. | 3 | Although I have lived in Brockholes for over 25 years, I know relatively few residents apart from my immediate neighbours. The village has been expanded by housing developments which tend to feel separate to each other and as many people work outside the immediate area, there are relatively few opportunities to connect. | 5 | I feel safe when out alone in the village or surrounding counrtyside | 4 | Parks could be better maintained, litter and dog poo create problems. Recycling facilities are available in neighbouring villages. There is no residents association. | 3 | There are a number of community groups in neighbouring villages or in Holmfirth, eg River Holme Connections, the food bank at Thongsbridge, but noe specifically in Brockholes. The opinions of local people seem to be largely ignored when decisions are taken which will significantly affect the future of the villlage, particularly with regard to planning and development. | Ensure local residents are informed about, involved in and have their opinions listened to with regard to local planning and new developments. Improve maintenance of and support for local facilities in order to develop a greater sense of community. Improve road safety near the park and the school by reducing the speed limit, and introducing simple traffic calming measures eg rumble strips or humps to slow vehicles, or extending the parking restrictions at peak times. | Action has to come from Kirklees Council.
| 2022-03-11 | Brockholes | HD9 7A | 45 - 54 | male | As a Brockholes resident wanted to take part | 5 | Spoilt for choice as far as walking is concerned, but cycling is a different story. There is very little (official) off road, and the roads can be very busy, coupled with the on-road parking, it can feel unsafe. | 7 | 5 | see answer to question 1 | 2 | The village green could be great, but it does little to promote being used | 7 | surrounded by countryside (at the moment) | 3 | Village green - but it isn't really attractive for encouraging children to play | 2 | 2 (not great) pubs, 2 expensive shops, Fantastic sandwich shop and the takeaway next door isn't bad. But I would not say that Brockholes meets my needs | 4 | It depends on what you are looking for. Pesonally, I have to travel over 50 miles each way for good quality work. | 7 | 5 | 1 | 6 | 6 | 5 | This is a good start | Sense of community needs improving
| 2022-03-12 | Brockholes | HD9 7A | 75 and over | female | 4 | I used to walk in woods and fields in brockholes now I have difficulty walking period.... | 4 | I seldom use public transport as I have a car | 1 | Literally there is very little room for improvement in brockholes! | 4 | 4 | Not much seating, fields and trees are lovely, good variety of birds and there are grey squirrels where I live, downside the very close oak trees leave a deposit on my stone flags which makes them very slippery in wet conditions | 5 | Good space for children behind rock terrace. Has the boules court taken off? Popular bowls green by travellers rest.... | 3 | Can we have our post office back! At Neily sports could there be bottle banks beside the other facilities for charities. | 4 | Being a long time retired this doesn't affect me much | 4 | Don't know | 3 | Brockholes methodist where I used to meet people has closed.the village hall holds monthly events, just started after a long break due to covid, . | 4 | 3 | There is a footpath at the bottom of my garden, I like fresh air when in bed but feel a bit vulnerable 're going to sleep with the window open, nevertheless I do so... | 5 | Litter yes, dog mess in the field where I look onto. Some people pick up, most don't. Could the glass collection system be brought back. Grey and green bin collections work well. | 5 | Don't know how to be listened to particularly, but not particularly bothered by this fact, brockholes works well for my needs generally. | Post office., bottle bank a free gardener to occasionally attend to my paving stones | Honley has a post office in a shop , I know this would be difficult in brockholes, having just the one shop. Bottle bank is easy.
| 2022-03-12 | Brockholes | HD97E | 45 - 54 | male | Community Consultation | 1 | Pavements along New Mill Rd are often blocked by parked cars and there are no dedicated cycle paths in the area. The area around the school is chaotic at pick-up/drop-off times with parents parking on pavements and blocking residents' drives. | 2 | The local train service is excellent, but doesn't run frequently enough. Additional services at peak times would be helpful - if you miss the train due to a connection problem at Hudds, then you have to wait an hour. There is no parking for cars/bikes at the station. The station is well maintained but basic. | 1 | Parking is an issue on New Mill Road and Brockholes Lane. Cars regularly block pavements in both locations and parents park inconsiderately. Residents on Brockholes Lane park opposite their homes, creating issues for residents on the other side of the road. Dedicated station parking would really help too. The road speed outside the Primary School is too fast. Coming down Brockholes Lane from Farnley Tyas, the road is Nation Speed limit and this does not change to 30 until after the junction for Ridings Fields. This means that cars are regularly going too fast as they approach the school. This should be a 20 mph area, with something in place to slow traffic coming down the hill before the rail bridge. | 3 | There is very little public space apart from the Recreation Ground. It would be nice to have more tree planting at the roadside. The New Mill Road part of Brocholes lack character and could feel more like a village centre. There is no sense of arrival in Brockholes. It looks like a few houses at the side of a road. | 7 | Local walks, woodlands, public footpaths etc provide excellent opportunities for recreational walking etc. | 2 | Apart from the park in the Rec there's not really anything else. | 1 | There is very little in the way of amenities - it's poor especially since the post office closed. Apart from the pub there is nowhere to socialise and meet people. The shooting club ruins every Saturday afternoon. It's impossible to enjoy your own garden, or the local landscape with guns firing every few seconds. It's incredibly disruptive and oppressive. | 2 | I think most people commute. There's little work in the local area. The rail services should recognise this by adding additional services at peak times. | 3 | Most of the housing is at the smaller end, with little variety. Proposed new homes are boxy and not designed with the local area in mind. | 2 | I am not aware of anything that brings the community together. | 6 | I think the Holme Valley has a strong sense of identity and community. I'm not sure that Brockholes offers anything beyond this but I'm not sure this really matters. | 5 | There is no police presence unless they're trying to catch people speeding, but I don't generally feel unsafe. | 1 | Road sweeping and pavement cleaning is minimal. The leaves are often left at the side of roads, blocking drains and creating slip hazards. There are dog-fouling issues. The council don't appear to do very much at all. Signs are dirty and there's a general feeling of neglect. I'm not aware of any residents associate or active council presence. There are no recycling facilities so I have to take bottles and glass to New Mill or the supermarket. | 1 | No. There is no feedback mechanism. The Council don't appear to listen or care to residents in the Holme Valley. | Get rid of the shooting club, or at least allow residents some Saturdays in the spring/summer to enjoy their gardens and local environment. Increase road/pavement cleaning to reduce leave litter/dog mess. Slow down the traffic on Brockholes Lane especially coming down the hill. Create a sense of place on New Mill Road so people know where they are, otherwise it's just somewhere you drive through. | Improved consideration from the council to take action around the shooting club and to improve cleaning/environmental services. Introduce a 20 mph zone around the school, slowing traffic from before the railway bridge coming down the hill.
| 2022-03-13 | Brockholes | Hd9 7e | 35 - 44 | female | Community consultation. | 3 | There are some under lit roads near where I live, for example Smithy Place, which makes it difficult and dangerous to walk around (especially in the dark) There are also roads without pavements, or where pavements see partially blocked by obstacles such as parked cars The main road (New Mill Road) is really difficult for cycling as traffic is heavy and there is no cycle lane | 2 | Trains are only once per hour; they are often late and get stuck due to the single track Buses are not regular enough and don’t run to time Public transport needs a lot of improvement Buses are better once you get past Honley, as there are lots more buses on this route | 3 | Lots of cottages so people don’t have drives / access to off street parking The traffic on New Milk Road is terrible, especially at school times It’s very difficult and dangerous for my daughter to cross this road to get over to Honley High School - there needs to be more crossings I often queue for a long time just to get out of my road I’m really worried about the proposed new housing development on Smithy Place, as the traffic will get even worse | 4 | The woods are wonderful and the park is nice On the downside, the aren’t many green spaces left and this is sad There is nothing distinctive about Brockholes that sets it apart it makes it memorable | 4 | River area and woods are great and the park is OK Lots of green space is being built on, which is sad | 2 | Small park area for kids to run around, but often has a problem with dog poo Other than the park, there’s nothing else for people to do in the area and we have to travel into Holmfirth, Huddersfield or further afield for leisure | 2 | There is one shop which is often close and is unreliable There is one takeaway, so no other options The pub is friendly There are no other amenities- or they’ve been removed. There are GP surgeries (as far as I’m aware), the post office has been shut down, there is nowhere to buy groceries that is reasonably priced and reliable, there are no nurseries. Apart from the pub, there is nowhere to meet friends and eat - especially for children and young people. The primary school is generally good. | 2 | There are no / hardly any opportunities for work here | 2 | Hardly any homes available; when one comes on the market for rent or to buy, it goes straight away. Homes are not affordable and prices are still going up. | 1 | Apart from the pub, there is nowhere to meet people / rescue social isolation I have struggled with this since I moved here | 2 | There is nothing specific they identifies Brockholes I don’t feel part of the community Some people are welcoming, however many people have viewed our families as ‘in comers’ and we haven’t felt welcomed | 3 | I always felt quite safe here until I was assaulted in the woods 2 years ago Since there, it has been difficult to feel safe out on my own (and for me to feel my daughter is safe) More lighting would help with this | 5 | Most building and spaces look generally well cared for, thank you | 2 | Lighting and safer streets Reduction in traffic / traffic control and safer crossings More areas / places for people to meet More social opportunities, especially for children and young people Something interesting to identify Brockholes | As per last question
| 2022-03-14 | Brockholes | HD9 7B | 55 - 64 | female | Scanned copy | 4 | 4 | 4 | Parking down Brockholes Lane is difficult at school times making it difficult to drive up and down. Trying to get out onto the main road is a nightmare from both ends of Rock cottages and Rock Terrace. You take your life in your hands | 5 | 4 | Both of the wooded areas are difficult to navigate - due to poorly kept footpaths. The walk along the railway line, is boggy nine months of the year | 3 | The recreation ground is average. Again, troubled with being boggy a lot of the time. As with most places, there is nothing for older children / teenagers | 4 | We are lucky to have Holmfirth so close with its swimming pool, skate park and shops. The library and shops are good in Honley. In Brockoles itself the shop is poor | 5 | The job Facebook page for Holmfirth is really good. It also covers surrounding areas too | 5 | Housing is varied in Brockholes most of it is well looked after, but some areas on certain roads are looking scruffy. The roads and grass kerbs are in a poor state. I think if people are making large repairs/improvements to their property it should have a time limit to put it back to looking presentable | 5 | We are lucky to have the village hall but feel we could benefit from recreation ground been semi-creaked into a small park | 5 | Brockholes has always been a welcoming friendly place to live. I do feel that of late lots of traditions have been lost e.g. carnival, local events at Village Hall | 5 | Brockholes is generally safe, but in particular the path from Rightox Road up to the Ridings is poorly lit and poorly maintained | 4 | Dog mess is a problem. Bins need emptying more often. The wheelie bins often look unsightly, particularly on the front of Rock Terrace | 3
| 2022-03-14 | Brockholes | HD97E | 45 - 54 | male | Living in Brockholes with my partner and young daughter for the past 5 years. Our young daughter attends Brockholes C of E primary. My partner's mother has also moved to the area to be close to us. | 3 | Generally there are lots of great places to walk and cycle. Though I am concerned about the dangers for pedestrians on Smithy Place Lane. It is steep, there are dangerous bends, and many vehicles use it as a 'rat-run'. There is no pavement on either side, and vehicles regularly drive too fast. I believe it should have a 20 mph speed limit, at the very least. Also the path along the river needs some upkeep, after the recent heavy rains, it is eroded underneath, and I think the path may collapse at certain points, which could be dangerous. | 5 | I use buses and trains, and generally these are fine. | 5 | 4 | 4 | We are lucky to have the river, Hagg Wood & Cliff Wood. I'm grateful to have these lovely places right on our doorstep. I am concerned about the proposed housing development at Smithy Place which will destroy a lot of green space and wildlife. | 4 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 5 | 5 | 1. I am concerned about the dangers for pedestrians on Smithy Place Lane. It is steep, there are dangerous bends, and many vehicles use it as a 'rat-run'. There is no pavement on either side, and vehicles regularly drive too fast. I believe it should have a 20 mph speed limit, at the very least. 2. Also, at the junction with Woodhead Road, the foliage at the corner is not trimmed often enough, resulting in poor visibility of oncoming traffic for vehicles pulling out onto the main road. I am concerned there will be a dreadful accident. 3. The river side path is in need of upkeep, after the heavy rains. | 1. Speed limit on Smithy Place Lane... possibly with a speed sensing flashing sign? 2. Regularly trim foliage at corner of Smithy Place Lane and Woodhead Road. 3. 62 | 2022-03-14 | Brockholes | HD9 7B | 65 - 74 | female | Take part in the future of the area | 5 | Plenty of walks but get very overgrown sometimes through lack of foot traffic which can be because the path becomes less accessible - vicious circle! | 4 | Dont use public transport at the moment | 2 | No car parks in the area and all parking has to be on the roads. A lot of properties are older with no driveways and roads gets very congested | 6 | Very pretty area and generally looks good. | 6 | 4 | There are a couple of well maintained childrens playgrounds but no tennis courts or football fields etc - have to go out of the area for those | 4 | Brockholes is a very small centre no not much selection of shops and amenities. Have to go out of the village for most amentities as very limited | 4 | I dont know | 4 | Good range of private and rental houses for all price ranges. Some rental areas very scruffy | 3 | Very few apart from functions and the village hall or church and if youa re not involved with these, then very little going on to my knowledge | 4 | Brockholes is small and there is no true centre to feel part of | 6 | 5 | Roads are terrible - full of potholes but nearly everywhere like that. | 2 | not involved but happy with that | Potholes need filling in Better maintance on walking routes | Local groups could organise an event to prune bushes overgrowing on footpaths The council needs to catch up on filling in potholes as can be dangerous

| 2022-03-14 | Brockholes | HD9 7B | 75 and over | male | Scanned paper copy - postal return | 5 | There are enough footpaths and routes to schools/bus stops/shops. The paths are not particularly well maintained. There are nice walks close to the village. I don't understand why cyclists should be given preference over cars, as long as vehicles give due consideration to cyclists. | 4 | I do not use public transport a great deal. It is probably just about adequate. The small buses could be better timetabled to link with the trains. | 3 | The ever increasing numbers of cars in Brockholes and the Holme Valley is starting to cause problems. The number of housing developments means more cars. The 2 building supply merchants at Honley Bridge and Brockholes with their heavy delivery vehicles is causing problems. Kirklees Council seem oblivious to this and the situation will get worse. | 4 | Unfortunately Brockholes village is not particularly attractive (post industrial). The verges on Oakes Avenue are a disgrace. Thankfully the surrounding countryside is pleasant. | 5 | There is plenty of natural space surrounding Brockholes. The main Rec is probably underused. | 6 | 3 | The village hall is probably underused. | 4 | Brockholes is really a dormitory village with most people travelling to work. | 5 | There is a broad range of housing in the village. Recent developments have not been particularly attractive. | 3 | Like I said before, the village hall is underused. The 2 pubs provide a limited opportunity for social contact. | 2 | In my opinion the village does not have much of an identity. | 4 | 3 | Brockholes is in parts a scruffy village | 3 | It is all well and good having Independent Councillors but their influence is limited. Verges on Oakes Avenue churned up due to bad parking, look awful | 1 | Little done to maintain natural spaces infact to the contrary, lots of natural space being built on! No bat boxes etc | 3 | Park but gets water logged and little for children | 3 | Local facilities barely non existent but locally Honley is pretty good | 3 | Some local economy though commercial properties along main road are very unsightly and ugly and poor impact on environment | 2 | No social housing yet lots of big houses being built. Huge housing development with no matching local facilities and decimation of local natural Spaces | 3 | Very little in Brockholes. More in Honley and Holmfirth | 4 | Positive identity based on local environment | 5 | Yes would say it is a safe place though never see police officers | 3 | Yes generally though state of verges along Oakes Avenue is v poor. The back path/road to the caravan site is also not accessible | 4 | Train stations would be upgraded | 1 | It is essential that speeding is controlled through Brockholes and on the way out, up the hill towards New Mill (A616) Traffic both ways is appalling between two camera zones. Someone will be killed if not addressed. There should be controls on large wagons/lorries using the village as a short cut to the motorway | 5 | Positive - A pretty village where local businesses make considerable effort to work together at Christmas etc Negative - The new businesses tend to attract the large trucks/lorries making the A616 more hazardous. Many large vehicles seem to use the village as a short cut to the motorway | 4 | Natural spaces are not accessible for those with disabilities e.g. wheel chairs / rollators. No seating in the woods and no access for those with disabilities in many areas of the village | 4 | See earlier comments (retired, often use a rollator) | 2 | Very poor facilities, one local shop. Needs a community cafe and organisation meeting communal needs | 5 | Good local businesses | 4 | In general good housing stock. Will be a problem for accessing the A616 when all the new houses are built near the caravan site | 2 | Very poor (places to meet others rarely accessed) | 4 | Could be considerably improved | 3 | Roads are safe due to speeding on the A616. The path along the wood needs patrolling at night (cyclists/pedestrians in the dark with torches?) | 4 | The condition of the trees in the wood along the riverbank needs safety checks. Cars parked across drives in front of bins put out for collection and parked on bends | 5 | 4 | The building / construction work continues at he present route with housing, natural space will be at a premium | 4 | No facilities at all for teenagers | 3 | Facilities are limited, two takeaways and one general shop with very limited supplies | 1 | Very few opportunities in the village or the valley | 2 | There is very limited housing available for different sizes of household. Most new builds are at least 4 bedroom properties at sky high purchase costs. Young families and young people just cannot afford these properties. The village and others in the valley will suffer in the future as young people leave the area. The promises made by builders of cheaper properties in their planning applications - never materialise | 5 | The village hall very good, with a variety of community uses. The methodist church has now closed down | 4 | The older people in the village still feel connected to older neighbours and friends. As with modern family life the village community as such has gone. The village is viewed positively as seen by how easily properties for sale are snapped up almost immediately | 5 | The only route in the village that does not feel safe is the 'duck hole' . As light on there has been out of action for over 2 years despite repeated requests, no action has been taken to date. The grass verges need removing to allow for much needed additional parking. This will also make the road more attractive as at present cars are parked on them, turning everything to mud | 4 | 1 | Parking on Oakes Avenue is very difficult. The grass verges take up too much parking space and make it difficult for emergency services / buses etc to navigate the road. Removal of the verges would create much needed parking | 4 | Apart from the grass verges on Oakes Ave already mentioned. Paths are narrow along main road, which has become very busy and increasingly difficult to cross as there are only two crossings in the centre but none between there and Luke Lane or centre to Honley. There appears to be no consideration for wheelchair users | 4 | Fares are expensive for the service that is provided | 1 | People struggle to compete against vehicles. Very few drivers show any consideration to pedestrians. With the volume of traffic passing through on the constant increase, this is only getting worse. If you walk along the New Mill Road at busy times of the day, the vehicle fumes catch your breath. The constant drone of traffic noise starts at approx 6.30am | 2 | There is too much housing development on green space. This is having a severe impact on wildlife and birds. Also the cost of the houses which are being built are too expensive for young local people to purchase | 1 | There is only limited natural space available in Brockholes. The park and play area is not maintained to a very high standard. All other open spaces are being covered with houses. The Riverside walk is not well maintained and the river is full of rubbish. | 1 | Very poor, no access for wheel chair users, only limited safe areas for children to play | 1 | What facilities and amenities | 3 | Limited | 1 | There are no new affordable homes being built in Brockholes. The latest on New Mill Road has a starting price for houses at over £530k and exceeding £700k. There is a second site just along from this but again it doesn't appear to have lower price properties included in its development. As old people pass on, it appears that developers prefer to demolish their homes and developed land to maximum no of expensive homes where possible | 4 | Limited opportuntities | 4 | We have limited contact with others. We make contact with others mostly when we are walking our dog | 4 | We feel safe in our home but we are very cautious after dark. We find a lot of cans, rubbish and broken bottles on the footpaths near our home which have been thrown from passing vehicles | 4 | Park and play area is not very well maintained. Needs to be permit parking only on Brockholes lane, will only get worse if the train station is renamed to Brockholes and Holmfirth attracting more people along with those awful houses to be built near Hagg Wood which will put further pressure on public transport. Also its only a bit nit picking but school drop of time some people just dont realise cant park on yellow zigzags. Taxi drivers worst offenders, they need repainting and regular patrols by PCSOs and the council CCTV van at school drop and pick up times. | 6 | Brockholes is a lovely place to live which is completely separate from Honley, Holmfirth Oldfield etc. There are nice green spaces between them and it needs to stay that way. No need to build more houses on green belt (or what is perceived to be green belt). The buildings, houses are quite nice. Apart from horrible ones built on riding fields. The new takeaway Marios sign looks terrible and out of keeping with the area and the local shop at bottom of Brockholes Lane needs a revamp, maybe council money to incentivize them to update the outside and inside. The new industrial units are not in keeping with area and could potentially become new Lockwood.. which we do not want. | 7 | Woods and walking all around. Looks like something out of Deighton or Moldgreen. | 4 | Dont have anything to say on this | 7 | Yes there is plenty of housing. Theres no need to fill the coffers of the property developers. I like whats happening in Holmebridge making use of the disused Mill. That is property development. Not building on greenbelt/percevied greenbelt land. | 7 | 6 | 7 | No issues in area. Just be careful building more houses and having areas that start to get run down with 'broken window' theory. So making sure things area repaired. People in Brockholes pay through nose in council tax and want to see issues solved quickly. | 6 | Little bit of dog mess here and there, probably no worse than anywhere else. Oakes Avenue doesnt look great but free housing means you dont look after stuff. Doesnt seem to be any ASB. The park at neiley fields and bottom of brockholes lane seem well kept. | 6 | Doing this means you are looking for our opinion so thats fine, whether you listen or not is another question. | Dont bother with 20mph zone outside school. Where will they park? As limited parking near station as cars now parking on Ridings Fields which is a narrow road. Most of the people on this road are elderly retired people that need access most of the day | 1 | Footpaths by station covered in moss and ivy and leaves left to rot can become slippery and dangerous when wet. Wall knocked down by a car by Travellers Rest pub, New Mill Road a few years ago and still not repaired. Makes it look like people don't care where they live - example vegetation and trees covering road signs and also footpaths in places. A good example is the old Honley Council offices. Another example is the hill down to Meltham Mills from Honley, trees over hanging restricting the width of the road and none of the pot holes are repaired to good standard | 5 | 4 | Dog dirt is a big problem in Brockholes. Not all dog owners clean up after their pets. We think we have got some good independent group of councillors for the Holme Vallley North Ward who are doing the best they can on all matters that affect the area they represent | 4 | 4 | As we are in our seventies we can't comment on this | 4 | 7 | Brockholes are limited to what they can provide as it's a small village | 7 | 4 | 4 | 4 | Our local councillors do their best in Brockholes but do the councillors listen in Huddersfield, we doubt it. When exiting Brockholes cars parked block the view to the right, making the entry to New Mill Road hazardous. 86 | 2022-03-18 | Brockholes | HD9 7E | 65 - 74 | male | Not sure what this means | 4 | Cycling on the road and off road are reasonable. The main reasons cycling is difficult is the terrain. | 1 | The price of public transport is high and at the whim of private companies. A system that limits cost as in London and Manchester would improve things. | 5 | There is reasonable parking. | 2 | The area is being ruined by the number of houses that are being built or where planners are seeking planning permission. | 3 | Yes we can now but planning applications if granted would make this situation much worse | 6 | Fine | 1 | Schools are full and there is a shortage of places for Dental treatment. Waits for appointments are long. Builders are applying to build houses when there are not sufficient facilities in the area for them. Disgracefully they are trying to avoid there contribution. | 5 | Ok | 1 | The housing doesn’t meet local need. Builders are only interested in building detached houses to maximise profit. They do all in their power to avoid building starter homes. | 6 | Village pub and village hall provide a range of social activities | 2 | Brockholes was a lovely village with a great community this is being trashed with the amount of recent houses being allowed. It will be appalling if planning permission is given to allow the big estate effectively making Honley and Brockholes one village with no separation. A disgrace. | 7 | Nice area. | 6 | Fine | 1 | The villagers have absolutely no say in what building is allowed. All that counts is allowing building companies to basically build where they want and destroy the area. A disgrace. | Bring in a system that restricts building and the destruction of wildlife habitats. Where planning permission is given , give it to build affordable housing and houses for rent. Stop our villages from being joined together by excess building just for profit. Make the builders build on brown field sites in town. | A sensible planning system that cared about people not just profit.
| 2022-03-18 | Brockholes | Hd9 7b | 55 - 64 | male | 3 | Most roads are reasonably suitable for cycling. However congestion with motorised vehicles is problematic | 4 | Buses are mediocre and expensive, however the train is decent | 1 | Far too much parking everywhere on roads causing problems. Significant reduction in free parking and massive increase in chargeable parking costs would be a good start. Public green areas are generally in reasonable condition, attractive and useful | 6 | We are fortunate to live in an attractive semi rural area | 5 | Reasonable availability | 4 | Mixed bag very locally, but a little further afield and services are reasonable | 3 | Within Brockholes directly there are some workplaces but there are more available a little further afield | 5 | Decent mix of housing, although maybe emphasis is higher on more expensive housing | 5 | 6 | Brockholes is clinging on to some sense of identity despite the closer and closer links to Honley. As a long term resident (from birth) I do generally feel I belong | 7 | Have always felt safe here | 5 | 3 | Get rid of cars and other motorised vehicles | No pavement parking at all. 90 | 2022-03-19 | Brockholes | HD9 7E | 25 - 34 | female | Community consultation | 7 | Our family regularly use the public footpath to walk the dog and travel to neighbouring villages. They are usually very well maintained. | 3 | The buses seem okay although we don’t need to use them anymore. We often have guests stay over that rely on the train service. This year the trains have been terrible with last minute cancellations. My guests travel back to Huddersfield or York and have to pay for tickets on the app before boarding so they end up paying for a service that isn’t running. | 4 | Schools will always have parking issues, that happens everywhere. I do wonder if a shuttle drop off/collection service could exist so that the playing field car park or harriers car park could be used. The train station also attracts a lot of cars. Neighbouring villagers park in brockholes all day then commute to Leeds/Sheffield. Extra parking for Alexander’s sandwich shop is also needed but I don’t know how these issues could be fixed. There’s simply no room. I’m also concerned about all the new houses being built and the impact. | 7 | Generally seems clean and well presented. The Rock Inn put a lot of effort in to making the main road look lovely. | 7 | The fields and woodlands with public footpaths is partly the reason we moved here. The natural spaces we have are great. | 6 | Another things that’s great here - my only difficulty is trying to get a pram into the playground. I understand why the barriers are there but it will be impossible for me to use the playground on my own with more than 1 child. | 7 | We have some great services within walking distance. I am concerned about the impact of all the new developments on our facilities and environment. | 7 | The location provides good connections to city’s so there’s plenty opportunity local and further a field. | 2 | The older homes provide some smaller cheaper dwellings but I am concerned that new developments may be of a lower quality and too big and expensive. | 7 | Green spaces and the village hall do great things for this. | 7 | The village hall helps a lot with this. | 5 | I feel safe 80% of the time. We’ve had annual issues with burglaries around Christmas but this is definitely getting worse each year. They no longer seem to wait for winter or nighttime. There has been one off events that have impacted how safe I feel with someone trying to abduct a teenager as well as the lady from the newsagents being mugged. There’s also a total lack of regard for people waiting at the zebra crossing and I did witness a child get knocked over. I’ve stood there with a giant breed dog and a baby strapped to my back and literally waves at the passing cars and 8 have gone past before letting me cross. The pelican crossing has been a great addition. I would be interested in financially contributing to a cctv system that records the cars entering/leaving brockholes and other oaks avenue if it meant we could start catching and putting off some of these criminals. | 5 | We have a fly-tipping issue on the corner up brockholes Lane where it turns towards Thurstonland. Our rubbish collectors also let the area down. This week they left a bag of rubbish from multiple houses on the floor next to the bin. Our bin was only a small bit open. They could at least put the bag back in the black bin after they’ve emptied it instead of risking them being split open and spreading rubbish around the village. Our neighbour is a household of 5 and really struggle with only one bin. They now have a huge backlog of rubbish down the side of there path which spreads litter into gardens etc. I am very concerned from and environmental health perspective. | 6 | Councillors do listen and act as much as possible on feedback. It’s so sad the see the government overturn their hard work and go against what locals want. | Rubbish collections are the biggest issue impacting our area. We also spend more and receive less services than neighbouring councils. In Calderdale my parents pay a lot less but have a variety of recycling containers and are able to recycle glass. | New waste contracts that puts locals needs first.
| 2022-03-20 | Brockholes | HD9 7B | 65 - 74 | male | Community Consultation | 1 | There are footpaths but not all are clearly marked. In some cases both walking and cycling seem positively dangerous with narrow lanes used as rat runs e.g., Brockholes Lane and Smithy Place. Also the pavement from Brockholes to the Spar garage is very narrow and in parts very badly surfaced. Car parking on pavements has become an additional problem, as well as school run traffic. This is especially so on Brockholes Lane near the school, with parking even on the bend. The upper end of Brockholes Lane and Smithy Place are also extremely dangerous in winter, when snow lingers and black ice forms. | 2 | Bus services are fairly frequent, but train service is only hourly and not entirely reliable. Toilets, secure parking and cycle storage are not provided either at the railway station or in the village. It is difficult to comment on quality and maintenance since I have not used public transport since the start of the pandemic. Previously I have had the impression that vehicles were older stock, and that this area had not kept pace with other regions. | 2 | On certain narrow roads it is unclear as to who has priority, traffic or pedestrians. Smithy Place and the upper reaches of Brockholes Lane are two instances. Since I am away from the main road I cannot comment on noise and air quality. Access to the main road from Steep Riding is however a constant problem. Parking on the main road obscures the view and access is therefore frequently dangerous. Traffic through the centre of the village, between the speed cameras at either end is often too fast. It is also too fast both up and down Brockholes Lane especially beyond the railway bridge. Unless you consider the pelican crossing to be traffic calming, there are no traffic calming measures on any roads within the village or on the main road. The parking of cars along the main road in the village, along Brockholes Lane and on Steep Ridings Field has become a hazard. Parking half on the pavements has become more recently an extra hazard for pedestrians. | 2 | The village green/recreation area is pleasant to look on, but dog litter remains a problem! The village hall, Methodist chapel and pre - 19th C houses overlooking the green add to the attractiveness of this area, and come as a surprise once having left the main road. The toll bar and pack horse bridge, as well as the earlier buildings on the main road are are also attractive. However, Rock Terrace is overpowering and the industrial estate opposite this is most unattractive! Not only do the units clash with the older buildings but the walling along the pavement has in places been robbed of its top stones. The trees originally planted for screening are inadequate and have become diminished. I rarely venture out once it is dark since I do not feel entirely safe. There are occasional visits to the village hall for meetings, but the approach is poorly lit and the nearby church yard is a pool of darkness. Empty cans and bottles testify to its use for other purposes. | 2 | The surrounding fields and woodland are especially attractive. Access is by way of the narrow lanes already mentioned in terms of traffic and parking, and by footpaths. Robinson's Lane is especially attractive as a tree lined old coaching route past old houses and through meadow land. It also provides grand views of the surrounding hillsides. Unfortunately, that area has been allocated for a considerable housing development. As a consequence what was good for historic associations, views, mature trees, wildlife, clean air and walks to take this all in will soon be destroyed. Elsewhere Brockholes Lane above the railway bridge is spoilt by its use as a rat run. traffic get stuck and have to squeeze past each other. Each day someone drives along it at an excessive speed. I use it regularly for walking but have to back into the hedge, and remain constantly alert. There is also considerable litter tossed out of vehicle windows. I have also encountered a discarded fridge, rotary clothes line, chunks of tarmac and broken paving as well as discarded black bags with litter along this lane. The side drains are also blocked in the upper reaches which causes flooding on this road in excessive rain with stone and mud washed down into the village. The blocked drains also cause water to erode gulleys at the side of the lane. Despite occasional repairs the problem repeats itself because the cause is not addressed. | 1 | I do not feel qualified to provide any comment. However, I am not aware of any facilities for teenagers. | 1 | There is no library/learning centre. Shopping is extremely limited due to the size of the village store, and requires driving to Honley or walking along the main road to a small Spar garage. There is a rifle club and a bowling green which caters for a niche market. The village hall has recently acquired a small boules court which is in its early stage of being developed. At the present time its use is very low key. The village hall is used by some providers, but most people living in the village rarely use it. Possibly this is because it has become a commuter village, with people staying in after work or else going elsewhere for their recreation etc. The post office was closed down. A postal van is sent as an alternative and comes only once a week, and currently parks up by the bowling green on the edge of the village, which is not convenient for older people to walk to. | 7 | I am retired. There are various small businesses within the village and larger trades businesses along the road approaching the village from Honley. Indeed it seems as if the villages have now merged! However, I am not aware of how many jobs in all of these are filled by local people. It would be interesting to know. Since the area is already linked by ribbon development to Honley, and an increasing number of open spaces have been filled in the last forty years, I would not wish for more green field or re-designated green belt land to be used. | 7 | No. Some housing on the main road as you approach the village was built in the mid 20th C and is out of keeping with brick build and cement rendering. More recent housing has been squashed into former brownfield sites. the latest additions are housing over £500,000 which do not cater for local inhabitants, but seem more appropriate for commuters from elsewhere. Planned housing around Robinson's Lane seems to be a disaster in the making. See previous comments on loss of green spaces. The problem is that if I say that local needs are not being met with sufficient affordable housing, then that gives planners and the council a green light to seek more green spaces, whereas if they had used what was previously available as brownfield land predominantly for affordable housing then this issue would have been addressed. Consequently I feel that we have gone beyond being able to meet a balanced housing supply. | 3 | There are two public houses, a village hall run by a small dedicated number of trustees, a village green, a Methodist chapel now closed and a C. of E. church, as well as a primary school. There is some usage of these. | 2 | I feel I belong but I am aware that I do not know the vast majority of people living on the varoius estates built since the 1970's. The village hall is under-utilized by the community and there seems little identifiable village identity. Interestingly the village remembrance day attracts only a handful of people. | 3 | I am extremely wary about being out late at night. I keep my doors locked even in the daytime. My estate is quiet but incidents happen which are reported in local blogs. | 4 | Dog dirt is a problem and also litter discarded along lanes. Recycling facilities are outside the village and require driving to. | 1 | I feel that objections to housing development schemes and business schemes in this area are a waste of time. I feel that Planners have too much control and over-ride voters concerns, and that many council representatives are ineffective. Consultations are I suspect a token gesture. | Listen to voters and act accordingly. Protect our green spaces and stop nibbling away at this land. Do more to enhance the environment ecologically. Bring in greater controls and perhaps learn from the neighbouring National Park. Do not turn this area into a Commuter Zone even though this might mean less council tax revenue. Do do something about the roads in this area. They have become an embarrassment. Clean up the litter and stop fly tipping. | That's your job.

Bad sight lines when coming out of Brockholes Lane junctions (two junctions) vehicles parked too near junctions. The present access routes to this area are DANGEROUS AND NEED REVIEWING | 5 | Brilliant walks along the river and by the railway you can walk to Thurstonland from here on two different routes, both path need some maintenance though. The walk from Riding Fields over the railway this path is slippery in places and needs extensive re-modelling. We have badger, foxes, owls, bats and deer to name but a few who live in the woods around Brockholes | 2 | The recreation ground is mainly for children. Installing adult exercise equipment might encourage more people to visit | 1 | We had a coop, greengrocers etc. Now we have only a convenience store, hair dresses, take away and mortgage office where the post office was. The doctors etc are in Holmfirth and Honley the village hall could be put to better use. We used to have guides, brownies, WI etc now we only have the after school club in the main hall. The end room could be use for groups, knit and natter, art classes etc. | 4 | With people working from home more and commuting to other towns, though there are new opportunities with several new businesses setting up along New Mill Road. | 1 | NO we need more first time buyer homes if any at all. | 1 | No not any more. The village had a carnival and old forks treat and used the village hall more. | 7 | Definately yes. I lived here for nearly 50 years and love it. Great school, nice community. We are a village and would like to stay so not joint to Honley by a new housing development | 5 | Until recently I've felt very safe but recently there have been a number of car theft's and people knocking on doors etc. | 4 | The recreation ground is well maintained. The area on the left as you go up Brockholes Lane (just before the school) could do with a upgrade and a planting scene( but not parks and gardens) perhaps veg and herbs like holmfirth | 3 | Not any more but I have done in the past but have lots of ideas how to make Brockholes Better. More could be done for the older people in the village by more activities And perhaps a Mother and toddler group which we used to have. | Non of this has mention the roads around Brockholes. If a one way system around the recreation group was made life would be so much easier. With traffic parked along the my the terrace house it gets very difficult to pass . Also 20 a hour speed limit through the village and into the village its self would be great. The new pelican crossing took for ever to be done but its a great improvement. People not parking on pavements especially around the school. Also all the white lines around the village need renewing . | Not a lot the Highways department could implement these asap
| 2022-03-03 | Brockholes | HD9 7B | 65 - 74 | female | Conversation at drop-in | 5 | Good walking routes, not aware of cycling. There is more on-street walking rather than footpaths. | 6 | Public transport is good with buses and the train service | 1 | School drop-off and pick-up times are a nightmare | 4 | In parts, the main road is not great to walk and the nature of the terrain is street parking | 6 | We have a campsite and recreation ground | 3 | There is a play area central to the whole village though the village has grown so it could be improved | 5 | The village hall is a good facility | 4 | There are good opportunities for work locally, that is the price for the volume of traffic | 3 | No, more housing is needed | 4 | There isn't much of a range - pub, village hall, school and bowling club | 2 | I do feel like I belong though I think it could be a lot better | 4 | Yes I have lived here for 35 years | 3 | Spaces, Rec, bowling club are all well looked after | 2 | No there has been a lot of change for the community | Increased housing is needed and parking issues need addressing | Stop building houses!
| 2022-03-03 | Brockholes | HD9 7B | 65 - 74 | female | Drop-in conversation | 3 | Not a good cycling system, it needs investment to create links for cycling. Public footpaths need improving and access can be difficult. | 4 | The train station was an attraction to the area. But 2 tracks have been reduced to one. So it is not as efficient as it used to be. The buses are okay. They are only along the bottom road and not into the village. | 1 | Cars park both sides of the roads and on the bend. School times are a nightmare. Heavily congested parking. The volume of traffic to and from Farnley Tyas is a rat run and badly eroded in places, it is difficult for traffic to pass. | 4 | Its not unattractive but there is not a lot here. The not a lot is what attracts some people. The caravan site is a positive asset. It brings large footfall to the area. | 5 | There are good long walks from the doorstep. Lots of good natural space that is accessible nearby. We need to protect and value the natural spaces. | 2 | There is petangue by the village hall and Brockholes bowling club. There is not a lot for recreation. | 1 | No. There is no GP or dentist. One small shop, one pub, one good school, no post office | 4 | No score given, put average score. The train enables access to work in Sheffield and Leeds. There is a local hub for businesses but I can't tell if local people are employed there | 4 | There is a good range of different housing; owned, social, private (majority is privately owned) | 2 | There used to be more activities on the green that brought people to the village centre. Could that happen again? Health and safety barriers. Could the methodist church building be a youth club? There is nowhere for young people to hang out. Good volunteers try to put things on in the village hall. The methodist church is closing. | 5 | I have good neighbours. People on the road know each other. The church congregation is depleting and there are less activities, Covid has had a bad impact. A lot of people have lived here a long time. | 3 | There is no Police presence, I never see the Police. There is no sense of anyone monitoring safety. A car was stolen on the road recently and a house damaged. There is a big divide between the haves and the have nots. A community Police presence would be helpful. | 4 | The railway station is attractive. Volunteers put a lot of effort into the village hall. There is a good school. The park needs improving and could enhance the village. | 1 | No. Planning is going ahead despite objections. My personal experience of Planning is that I did not feel listened to. 99 | 2022-03-05 | Brockholes | HD9 7E | 25 - 34 | male | Drop-in conversation. 2 people - one female same age | 5 | It is generally easy to walk around the village. There is no pavement outside our front gate and the bend is blind up to the school, making it dangerous when pushing a pram. Cars come round the bend at high speed. There is a lot of pavement parking on the main road (by woollen factory, marble place and sandwich shop). | 4 | Average score given as not scored - Don't use public transport | 2 | Cars, vans and lorries speed down into the village - to the Green, round it and adjacent lane. We are surprised the speed limit is 30 mph in a residential area. In Leeds the speed limit is 20 mph in residential areas. Parking is not an issue, and not at school times either. | 5 | Litter wise it is good but there is a lot of dog mess. There is a sign to deter it at the bottom entrance to the Green. The waste bins could be more attractive. The bridge by the campsite needs a good clean. | 7 | Though we might lose Smithy Fields to housing development which is a concern | 7 | The bottom Rec is good | 5 | We are lacking a good village shop. We have one but opening times are infrequent, it is "never open" it is "woeful". The petrol station has a useful shop. There are no baby groups or places for families to go to in Huddersfield or Holmfirth. It would be good to have something at the village hall. There is a pre-school for toddlers in the village. GP in Holmfirth and pubs, takeaways. | 7 | Work in Calderdale - its easy to travel to | 4 | There is a good mix of homes | 5 | We moved here in 2020 and have missed out. There is the village hall, pub and church. There is a lot going on at the village hall. | 6 | Yes Brockholes does have a distinct identity, people know it as an entity and talk about it. People are friendly and welcoming | 6 | Yes, dog fouling is an issue | 6 | 7 | Since moving here we have met our local councillors. We have seen the neighbourhood plan and engagement by Holme Valley parish council but it was very complicated so we did not feel that informed or that we could make a contribution. | A pavement on Brockholes Lane or lower the speed of vehicles coming round the bend. Reduce traffic speeds in the village - alot of young people walk around the village and to the Rec
| 2022-03-08 | Brockholes | HD9 7 | 65 - 74 | male | Drop-in conversation | 2 | Road verges and surfaces are not good for cycling on. Speed of traffic makes cycling difficult. There is a bottle neck/ pinch point by the pelican. Signage is ok. New Mill Road towards Honley the pavement is narrow by the petrol station. The pavement is narrow by the Travellers Rest - a kerb only making waking dangerous. | 6 | Yes the small bus connects well with Thurstonland and the main road. Buses are regular and go up to the hospital. On request the small busses go to Glossop for the day. The train service is good | 4 | Traffic does not slow down as it approaches the main road from the village. Parking on pavements makes it dangerous for walkers - on the main road. | 5 | The Kirklees street sweeper comes every week - the streets are clean and tidy. There are flowers and a Christmas tree provided by Kirklees Council. There is fly tipping in the local woods and on Miry Lane. | 7 | Very good, there are a lot of good paths. A footpath along the river at Smithy Place would be good. The River Holme Connections ranger is to do some work on it and a new ranger will be appointed soon | 6 | Similar improvements to the Rec here as at Meltham Pleasure Grounds would be good. Getting rid of the fences and some natural play is an improvement. | 5 | It would be good if the mobile post office that operates from the bowling club could come into the village hall. It would make it more convenient for people | 6 | i am retired. The small industrial units by the Rock are thriving | 4 | The 4 bed development at Smithy Place is not needed in the village - they are detached houses with no gardens. We need more starter homes, homes for older people and work units. | 6 | With the Smithy Place development we will lose the fields and dog walking space - people meet a lot that way. We are just coming out a lockdown. The Christmas craft fair was good. People in the village are on local Facebook sites. | 5 | Yes Brockholes is distinct from Honley. They are 2 communities. There is a lot of heritage at Smithy Place - Toll Bar and industrial archaeology. The village is liner but it has its own identity | 7 | Yes there is some crime from outside the area from time to time but it does feel safe from within the village | 4 | There are 1-2 neglected properties. Public spaces are well maintained. The circular path could do with some maintenance on the bottom Rec. The road adjacent has a few potholes. The riverside walk could do with a top up of gravel - it is a lovely walk but gets muddy | 7 | I have lived here for 20 years and know how to access information and how decisions are made | A one-way traffic system around the Rec and a "20 is plenty" speed limit |
