6/16/2020 18:38:51Festive OvertureOpener, ContestThere are sixteenth note runs in most of the woodwinds . Woodwinds stay in a good range for intonation. Short exposed soli/solos for flute, oboe and alto saxophones. Clarinets are featured with melody in opener. Great for big fanfare sounds. French horns, baritones/euphoniums and tubas have moving lines to bring out. . Trumpets and Trombones have 3 parts. Really great percussion parts! The musicians in the back will stay busy! These parts include: tom-toms(4) great part!, chimes, snare drum, suspended cymbal, bass drum, timpani, crash cymbals, Glockenspiel, Gong, Vibraphone,
Every section will stay busy and engaged during this piece. Great for concepts such as: matching note length, bringing energy to sound, matching dynamics throughout ensemble, and tempo changes. Great opener. Bonus: This piece is based in Shimizu City, Japan. Great for adding some geography lessons into our music!

6/21/2020 16:39:52Festive OvertureOpener, CloserSome moments in the beginning of the piece have some exposed clarinet moments. Some flute embellishment ideas near the end of phrases may be slightly challenging. The brass have some fanfare-esque moments in the first third of the piece that will require some careful articulations. Baritones have some really technical passages near the faster tempo sections.Percussion was really hard to hear in this recording but there seemed to be a few moments of expanded instrumentation. The contrasting styles give great opportunity to work on a variety of technical playing fundamentals with each section.8Skiba, Matthew

6/21/2020 16:40:23Festive OvertureNoveltyReally fast scalular passages. Will take a lot of slow work. 32nd notes at the end even during slow tempo are tricky.Tripple tonguing required. A lot of loud playing required!Very involved percussion! Not to be confused with Shostakovich's Festive Overture. Measure 10 1/4 note triplets vs 16ths is hard to line up. It is military-esk, but not american stereotypical. It is in a doable key.9Baker, Michael

6/21/2020 16:40:29Festive OvertureContest, CloserThere are some technical passages that could prove to be challenging. Such as syncopated 16thsThere will need to be double or triple tonguing used in some of the trumpet parts as well as the trombones The percussion isn't too bad, there is a section with the chimes that would need a solid player with the 8th notesThis is a big piece and would be great for a concert closer or for festival. 6Johnson, Johnathan

6/21/2020 16:40:29Festive OvertureCloserBefore 11, flute and pic are going to have to make sure they are working to stay together and match style. Staggered entrances at 53. Woodwind parts have some pretty wicked runs, that are less scary because of slower tempo. But also scary because they have to be together at that slower tempo. Doodliedoos after 93 in woodwinds. Keep the tempo going. Stay together. Trumpet 1 first note is a high G. Horns have a lot of alto stuff, even some of the faster material. Working to keep that clean will be challenging. Overall brass part not terribly challenging, but some rangie moments.Timpani has plenty to do. Need a good player. Bells player has to be solid to play along with upper woodwinds in 16th note runs. Cool piece. Need woodwinds with great fingers. Brass less so - but need good range.7Webb, Amelia

6/21/2020 16:40:29Festive OvertureChange of Pace, ContestGreat woodwind melody at the beginning: simple, lyrical, nice! Aligning the flurry of notes could be challenging. A lot of "flurry" that could either be fun or challenging for the woodwinds. Excellent fanfare to begin after woodwind intro. Some great lyrical lines as the piece moves on that can be great to balance upper brass and woodwinds. Some good parts, but nothing glaringly difficult that I can tell. Some passing of fast lines between woodwinds and brass would be good for emphasizing listening and pulse. 7Dix, Darren

6/21/2020 16:40:34Festive OvertureContestClarinets begin in the lower part of their range and will need large sounds. Tenor saxophone begins with them and will need to be aware of blending with the clarinets.
Staccato eighth notes will need to work on not covering the melody
woodwinds have long sustained chords in slow section that could be difficult to tune
Euphonium has the melody higher in their range (up to an F)
Trumpet soli section
Trombone soli section
Horns often have the main melody with the euphonium, mostly in the middle of their range
Percussion begin the piece with the only sense of pulse.

There are some very fast 16th note and 32nd note runs in the upper register! The brass parts are nice! There are some demanding french horn sections and some pretty high trombone parts. The percussion parts are well written, but there are extraneous staccatos on the snare 16th notes. This piece is technically demanding in terms of rhythms, dynamics, and technique. 3Dysart, Benjamin

6/21/2020 16:40:50Festive OvertureClosergreat ranges, many moments where you are crossing the break in the first and second clarinet parts, great technical piece for woodwinds. EUPHONIUM TECHNICALITY IS AWESOME, but in all seriousness these parts would be great for a spring concert, after they have built up the dexterity to play consistent sixteenth note lines Not very involved, but there are some great accessory percussion moments. 6/21/2020 16:40:51Festive OvertureContest, CloserClarinets will need to work hard to project in the lower register at the beginning. WW parts are very exposed at the beginning, could present a challenge to weaker players. Sixteenth note runs could be difficult at the faster tempo. Will need strong horns to carry the melody. The brass will need to work hard to not over do the marcato and fanfare sections. Could be difficult to get loud without sacrificing tone. Will need a strong, confident timpanist. There are a few exposed mallet parts that could pose difficulty. 6/21/2020 16:40:53Festive OvertureContest, CloserClarinet soli at the beginning with tenor sax sets up the melody at a mp dynamic. Tuning will need to be a consideration with this as there are large leaps in the melody. The sixteenth notes at m. 28 will need to be rehearsed to line them up. Staggered sixteenth note passages in m. 53 will need to be lined up so they sound seemless. M. 79 has 32nd notes that will need to line up at the slower tempo. There are fast sixteenth note descending lines at m. 98 and 99. F horn and baritone have the countermelody that will need to come through over the long-held woodwind notes. Horns, trombones, and baritones have the melody at m. 53. Baritone goes to high F in this melody. Trumpets and trombones may need to double tongue at m. 98. Timpani, snare drum, bass drum, and chimes set the tempo at the beginning. Chimes have a quarter note triplet in m. 6 following snare's sixteenth notes. Vibraphone has the rhythmic motion at m. 68.There are many stylistic and tempo changes. 9Becker, Vivian

6/21/2020 16:41:51Festive OvertureOpener, Contest, Closer
Some great finger facility moments exist! They're mostly scalar, and are re-articulated on downbeats. Around Measure 53- clarinets keep a running motif going through a written-in stagger breath approach, but that will need to be with each part playing with equality in approach. Some nice lyrical moments for saxophones to speak and perhaps use a bit of vibrato. The technical demand is frequent, while scalar, but it does often cover the entire range of the instrument in one run.
Triple tonguing opportunities exist for trumpets and trombones. French horns will take on important melodic roles without doubling and require some confidence. There are some moments of definite technical facility in the french horns as the create dialogue with the scalar runs in the high woodwinds.
Timpani in particular has some great moments of exposure and technique coming into the allegro tempo. Chimes and bells create important celebratory textures. While the snare helps to contribute to the subdivisions necessary for the woodwinds to stick with.
The opening has some lush, counter-melodic writing. There is great energy through the use of staccato articulations and brilliant brass orchestrations, matched with very energetic flourishes in the woodwinds and horns. Percussion plays a supplemental role, but metallics and cymbals create some crucial textures! 9Campopiano, Shawn

6/21/2020 16:46:26Festive OvertureOpener, CloserThe woodwinds play exciting runs alongside fanfare moments in the brass section. Some of the runs are fast and can be taxing for younger players. It will definitely require a more advanced section to play thorough the piece. The brass gets to play both exciting fanfare sessions as well as strident and melodies. The brass section comes in with syncopated chords. The percussionists play alongside the brass during climactic moments. Tubular chimes and suspended cymbals make arrivals complete. The various parts of the ensemble intertwine well. The ensemble plays through a variety of dynamics and articulations.10Macias, Juanpablo
