|2/2/2010 19:58:30||Instructional Technologist||I am in elementary school and basics in reading, writing, math must be learned before student can reach level to discern information meaning. It's brain development - about age 9 - after that, students can have more say in their learning and search for knowledge using internet and making connections to knowledge on their own and in groups.|

There are many things that I feel my students do not need to memorize, but need to know how and where to find the information. However, there are still core bits of information that I feel are essential for my students to memorize (addition and times tables, the names of the provinces (Canada) and their capitals, spelling rules, etc).|

No they don't have to memorise particular information but the act of memorising is in itself a valuable activity.
Students need to learn to deal analytically about the information.

I am simply the guide who creates the initial path and gets them on it. Hopefully, somewhere along the way a spark is ignited that makes them lifelong learners.|

Students need to learn basic knowledge, then from there be able to find out the rest of their answers using critical thinking and sometimes the internet. |2/2/2010 20:14:56||Teacher||The internet has changed the way I assess, rote facts don't really matter...what did the student learn and how can he apply that knowledge. Some memorization is still necessary...basic math , your address, phone numbers... Calculators and computers are still not accessible to all and energy is still an issue. I wonder if we should teach basics, reading, math only up until 3rd grade the go 1:1 and shift to problem solving model total immersed.||How can we power computers in remote areas without electricity? What mobile devices are available?|
|2/2/2010 20:15:20||Teacher||No longer are we just teaching content. The Internet has made content ubiquitous, and it is now our job as educators to teach students how to filter and evaluate content.|

Regardless of how the info is accessed (web, books, etc.) we need to teach how to apply that info, how to connect it to and construct new info.||What should every teacher know skill wise or how to do before entering the classroom?|
