7Nature and Fantasy
This unit will act as a transition unit, reviewing poetic techniques to begin with, whilst exploring the Romantic Poets and their attitudes to nature. We will then read and explore the novel ‘Wolf Brother’, exploring the fantasy genre and how nature is used, as well as learning how to write analytical paragraphs. Finally, students will plan and write the opening to their own fantasy novel.
Shakespeare and context
This unit will explore the importance of Shakespeare and introduce the idea of a literary canon. We will read and explore the play ‘The Tempest’, as well as looking at how context is important within literature. We will also explore non-fiction texts, including writing a newspaper article, and continue with our work on how to write analytically about literature texts.
Biography and Autobiography: Exam Skills
This term will review skills in approaching unseen reading texts, focusing on autobiography and biography, building towards independently tackling questions in an exam, followed by writing in the same genre.
Rhetoric: Dragon's Den
This unit will explore rhetorical devices: we will develop our skills in persuading people and our spoken language skills, with a focus on advertising and business persuasion.

8Dystopia
This unit will explore the dystopian genre, beginning with its origins and features of some key dystopian texts. We will then read and explore the novel ‘Hunger Games’, exploring how the dystopian genre is used, as well as developing our skills in writing analytical paragraphs. Finally, students will plan and write their own dystopian story.
Identity and Place
This unit will explore a selection of texts, with its main focus on poetry and non-fiction, looking at how writers explore their identity, express their ideas and the importance of place. We will write in an analytical essay style, and also explore a variety of non-fiction texts and their features.
Travel Texts: Exam Skills
This term will review skills in approaching unseen reading texts, focusing on a variety of different styles of writing about the theme of travel: this will build towards independently tackling questions in an exam, followed by writing in the same genre.
Rhetoric: Battle Cries!
In this unit, we will review the rhetorical skills learnt in year 7 and in the earlier year 8 units, building to writing a dramatic monologue. We will explore a series of different speeches linked to war, including those of politicians, as well as those in Shakespeare’s history plays (with a focus on Henry V). They will also be a focus on developing our spoken language skills..

9The Gothic
This unit will explore the gothic genre, beginning with its origins and features of some key gothic texts. We will then read and explore the short stories ‘The Fall of the House of User’ and ‘The Tell-Tale Heart’, alongside a range of extracts from different gothic novels (including reading The Woman in Black), exploring how the gothic genre is used, as well as developing our skills in writing analytical essays. Finally, students will develop their creative writing skills, describing their own gothic settings.
Protest
This unit will focus on developing our skills in analysing poetry, exploring a selection of poetry as well as writing our own. We will also explore the play ‘The Crucible’ and how the writer and characters protest as well as the theme of witches. There will be a focus on the importance of context in reading literature texts.
Macbeth
We will explore the play ‘Macbeth’ focusing on the plot, character development and key themes, as well as the context, building on from the contextual work in the previous module. This unit will focus on the text as drama, with an emphasis on speaking and listening skills.

Food, Glorious Food!
This term will review and develop skills in nonfiction writing, experimenting with a range of text types and styles related to the theme of food, as well as readiing a selection of literary, literary non-fiction and non-fiction texts about food.
