| Question Details | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
| # | Question | Asker Name | Answer
| 1 | What about inducer regarding NPSH test ? | Philippe ROGER | Yes the inducer would definitely be installed on the impeller when doing an NPSH test.
| 2 | Can we have some information regarding reduced speed testing for VS6 pumps (especially for MRT). Some customers don't accept MRT with reduced speed | Mahendra Devda | This situation will usually only occur if you are testing with the job motor. If testing with a test-shop motor you can select whatever motor size you need to cover testing on water. An MRT is considered to be a test of only the pump not of the complete drive train. If testing with the job motor then there are 3 options 1- Carry out the MRTat reduced speed 2- Carry out the MRT with a destaged pump 3- Carry out the MRT at Min Flow (or whatever flow does not overload the motor)
| 3 | What is the difference in test method and difference is acceptance criteria between G1, G 2.5 , G 6.3 Balancing | Shri Shri | I suggest you download / buy a copy of ISO 21940
| 4 | No issue for 45min webinar. English is my second language. | Philippe ROGER | Thankyou for the feedback
| 5 | Hi Smith, longer sessions are better to go through the examples in detail. | Ooi Keong Sim | Thankyou for the feedback
| 6 | Is it frequent to observe wear marks on casing wear-rings after a performance test? Would you accept is during visual inspection after test; why? | Laurent MICHEL | It is uncommon but possible. Possibly damage caused during assembly. Possibly on a multistage BB3/4/5 pump with 10 or more stages the stationary pump might have rested lightly on its wear rings. Depending on the extent of the wear marks maybe a clean up will be acceptable. If the "touching" is more pronounced then a complete tear-down inspection and retest might be called for.
| 7 | I noticed that the youtube links that are generated from these presentation are rated 18+ so I can't access these links (not signed in at youtube). Could this age requirement please be dropped | diederik Ross | LOL!! Clearly my videos contain adult content!! I will speak to Marketing who upload these videos.
| 8 | In Mech run test, do we measure any other parameter other than bearing housing oil temperature rise.? | Shri Shri | You might want to monitor bearing vibration from time to time as well as checking the flow head and power readings.
| 9 | Simon, thank you very much for a very interesting session! | Gennady Amusiev | My pleasure. Thankyou for attending
| 10 | If there is no acceptance criteria for charpy impact at low temperature. Is there any reference that could be followed in order to know the obtain results in the certificates are acceptable ? | Monica Sanz | Not that I am aware of. The ASTM or DIN Material specification is the reference document. Customers may wish to modify that acceptance criterion in collaboration with the pump supplier. The biggest problem is actually controlling the temperature when carrying out the test. A small sample will quickly warm up to room temperature when taken out of the cooling medium and installed in the test apparatus.
| 11 | Please explain again about 3 options of mechanical run test Can mech Run test be combined with performance test? Can the customer specifies all 3 options or combinations like option 1+2, 1+3 or 2+3? Difference 8.3.4.2.1 and 8.3.4.2.2. is not so clear.. | Gennady Amusiev | 1- Extend the performance test for say 30 minutes. This will normally be free of charge. 2- Carry out the performance test (say 30 minutes) and leave the pump running until 4 hours have passed 3- Run the pump until bearing temperature has stabilised (may take as long as 4 hours) then commence the performance test and the 4 hour run test (may take 8 hours) I have known it happen that the pump was started up at 6.00 in the morning, the customer inspector arrived at 9.00 am; the performance test was carried out; and the inspector accepted that the pump had been running since 6.00am so it passed the 4 hour run test.
| 12 | Hi,My name is Adrin,Thanks for training me and guiding me in right direction.my question is During balancing of multistage pump is impellers and other rotating parts are balanced separately and again assembled balanced as a rotor assembly | Adrin Sequeira | Yes. Each impeller is individually dynamically balanced then the assembled rotor is dynamically balanced.
| 13 | The duration of the presentation is very good. It is just sometimes difficult to follow because of the speed, when trying to read the slide and listen at the same time, but his can be solved by looking through the slides after the presentation) | Gennady Amusiev | Yes I admit some of the slides are very "wordy" which is difficult to take in while I am presenting. I considered leaving more time to digest the slide but then the session would last 90 minutes instead of 60! I recommend you re-run the slide show at your leisure to read the detail from the slides
| 14 | VS6 pump are always supplied with CAN. So, why cant we do proper NPSH test with job CAN if it is just a 3 or4 meter CAN.? | Shri Shri | Most manufacturers' test stands are not set up with a suitable hole in the ground to accommodate the suction can. There are a few that can do so and in those cases your suggestion is a good one. For the rest of us, assembling the 1st stage impeller (with inducer if used) and installing it in the vacuum supperssion tank is the answer. The benefit of this is that you are genuinely NPSH testing the 1st stage impeller.
| 15 | Nowadays, we push for use of variable speed machines using e-motors VFD driven. What about testing for these variable speed machines ? | Philippe ROGER | Most major pump manufacturers will have VFDs in their test stands and so will test pumps at the contract speed. A complete unit test will be carried out with the contract motor but not usually the contract VFD itself. The testshop VFD would be used.
| 16 | Hello Simon! I prefer longer, more detailed sessions. | Nicoleta Radulescu | Thankyou for the feedback
| 17 | Another question: if the customer requires a different test acceptance criteria than API/ISO and wants us to use some local national standards instead, would this be an extra cost? | Gennady Amusiev | Yes this can be accommodated and can be agreed on a case by case basis. It might be an extra cost if the standard is more restricting than API.
| 18 | For me, 1h total sessions are not too long and better to fit on the agenda, rather than serveral smaller sessions. I am English non-native speaker, but the sessions are followed pretty good (some help with the subtitles). | Maria Luisa Velasco González | Thankyou for the feedback
| 19 | if the pump is going to work with a different fluid that water, is the manufacturer going to incluide two curves in the performance report or only the one done with water and then it can be recalculated by the customer? | Monsif Ahlik Amara | The performance curve will be corrected for the SG of the fluid the pump will be handling in the field. So you will normally only get the one curve. Generally only the power curve is affected by this. If there is a viscosity correction then there will be two curves - the water curve and the viscous curve.
| 20 | When testing a pump connected to a VLT (Variable Frequency Drive), what key parameters and checks should you perform before and during the test run? | Ajay Goswami | No special measures are required when testing with a VFD.
| 21 | Can we do the disassemble of the pump after the mechanical run test? | Khaled Al Ali | Yes you can do either a partial or a full disassembly of the pump after the test. A partial disassembly is most common. So on an OH2 or BB2 pump you partially remove the "pullout assembly" from the case so you can see if the wear rings have "touched". This needs to be done anyway in order to spray the internals with rust inhibitor. On a BB1 or BB3 pump you can remove the upper case half and be able to inspect the rotor in situ. A full tear down inspection is not encouraged as the successful test has shown that the pump works and has been properly assembled. Arguably after a complete tear down and reassembly you would need another test to prove the re-assembly is good!
| 22 | Thank you for usefull training, During MRT Test, is it possible to measure critical speeds for pump bending (flexion) and twist (Torsion). | MEZENNER Ahmed | What you might be able to do might be to increase the pump speed while monitoring the vibration. Vibration will rise when a critical speed is approached. Obviously this will be on a case to case basis and, as it is usual to design a 20% separation between running speed and any critical speed, increasing speed by 20% may not be advisable or even possible.
| 23 | In extension to my earlier query for reduced speed testing, do we have any other way to test if customer don't accept MRT with reduced speed for light hydrocarbon applications (SG<0.5). FYI, customer is accepting FAT with reduced speed but not MRT | Mahendra Devda | This situation will usually only occur if you are testing with the job motor.
| 24 | what'your advise when we get performance test result on local test bench is different with test result on factory? is it can be from installation local test bench | Rizki Rajab Priangan | No two test stands are identical and it is to be expected that tests on two different test stands will be subtly different. The layout of the test loops will be different, losses different, can you be sure of the calibration of the instrumentation? How significant are the differences?
| 25 | During performance (load) testing, what parameters must be recorded? | Ajay Goswami | I suggest you download Short Couse 43 from the RP website where I covered Pump Performance Testing in detail
| 26 | Shall we alwayes the 4 hours mechanical running test requested by API ? or can we do less time (2 hours for example) ? | Walid OUTALEB | Mechanical run tests are OPTIONAL not REQUIRED. So you can have as long a MRT as you wish. 30 minutes, 2 hours, 4 hours, 8 hours…..it's up to you.
| 27 | As per API latest edition test points specified in API 610 some times client requests for 5 points in such cases should we follow API guidelines or client | Adrin Sequeira | If the customer understands that API requires 9 points and he is happy with 5 points then as long as you have that in writing you should be OK to follow the customer request.
| 28 | Is OH6 pumps needs to be balanced at G1 grade? | Adrin Sequeira | I asked this of Kirit Domadiyah who works for Sundyne Pumps He advises that it is G2.5

| Question Details | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
| # | Question | Asker Name | Answer
| 29 | Does Table 14 extent of examination refer to number of welds or length of welds? | Anonymous Attendee | Every weld to be inspected with LPE or MPE full length of every weld. Where 5% RXE is specified this would be at the Inspector's discretion.
| 30 | Why do some specifications require the impeller to be both statically and dynamically balanced? Doesn’t dynamic balancing already provide a higher level of precision? | Anonymous Attendee | For impellers and other wide rotating parts, static balancing is a crucial preliminary step for several reasons. - Identifies gross imbalance: Static balancing uses a simple fixture, like knife edges, to quickly identify and correct major unevenness in mass distribution. - Creates a stable baseline: A statically balanced impeller has its center of gravity aligned with its rotational axis, providing a stable foundation for the more complex dynamic process. -Addresses fundamental issues: A part can be statically balanced but still have a "couple unbalance," or wobble, at high speeds. However, an object cannot be dynamically balanced without first achieving static balance.
| 31 | Residual unbalance test also is a way of checking the calibration of the balancing machine. | Chris Valcourt | Thank you for your comment.
| 32 | How do I know what the permissible unbalance and rest unbalance are? | Anonymous Attendee | Pump vendor would calculate it and tell you, if necessary showing where it comes from
| 33 | Is the crack required to be repaired in the presence of the inspector? Reza hassanzadeh aghdam | Reza Hassanzadehaghdam | No. Nobody but the welder is normally allowed in the weld bay. Inspector would inspect the weld and the NDE of that weld afterit is welded.
| 34 | Where does the 32 Bar (465 psi)for 300# flange rating process pumps for >80% MAWP come from? A bit confused by that | Anonymous Attendee | API 610 6.3.5 says the minimum Casing Pressure Rating (MAWP) shall be 40 Bar at 38C. Per Table 14 Class 2 Inspection is required if calculated MAWP (shutoff head plus 10% plus maximum syction pressure at max SG) is equal or more than 80% of 40 Bar - which is 32 Bar.
| 35 | Whats your recommendation about H points in the ITP for customer? | Anonymous Attendee | It really depends on the criticality of the service. For a service water pump, possibly only final inspection. For a critical service pump in high temperature high pressure hazardous service you may want the full range of inspections and interventions
| 36 | Is Ultrasonic testing ever used for welds, or only castings? | Woodrow Lorenz | Depends on the accessibility for the probe.
| 37 | Are there any “specialty” tests to check a rotor vertically? | Roberto Carmona | I assume you mean for complete rotor balancing? Not to my knowledge.
| 38 | After replacing the rotor, does the entire pump need a CUT? | Alexandre Coccia de Souza | I assume you mean mechanical run test rather than Complete Unit Test? If a rotor has been removed and reassembled there is an argument that it ought to be retested to be sure the reassembly has been properly carried out. This is why we normally recommend only a partial disassembly. On an OH2 or BB2 pump this would involve removing the "pullout assembly" from the case so you can see if the wear rings have "touched". This needs to be done anyway in order to spray the internals with rust inhibitor. On a BB1 or BB3 pump you can remove the upper case half and be able to inspect the rotor in situ. In both these cases the rotor itself is undisturbed so a retest would not be necessary
| 39 | We came across a requirement of "Electrical Unbalance Test" for the multistage pump rotor? What & how it is done ? | Anonymous Attendee | Never heard of an “electric unbalance test”. The only term which comes to my mind is the “electrical runout test” for non-contacting displacement probes when sleeve bearings are used.
| 40 | For BB3 pumps, is it typical to test the balance with the pump half coupling installed on the pump shaft? Is the balance of the total drivetrain (pump, coupling, and motor) ever tested? Or only the motor and pump balanced separately? | Anonymous Attendee | Yes that is the normal practice. Pump half coupling installed on the pump rotor during balancing; motor half coupling on the motor rotor during balancing. It is not possible to balance the whole drive train as an assembly.
| 41 | Whether 'PMI with identification of carbon content can be carried out with normal PMI machine in house or it can be carried out externally with additional machine? | 2 | No. PMI machines do not recognise carbon.
| 42 | If a volute casting design applies ASMES Secc VIII Div.1, does the Hydrotesting is witnessed by an ASME Autorized Inspector? Does the volute casting requires U stamp per ASME or not neccesary? | Oliver Valadez | No. You can apply ASME VIII design standards and codes without requiring a U Stamp or ASME Inspection. The Buyer might specify it(perhaps in a high pressure high temperature critical service), in which case it would be necessary. To get an ASME U-Stamp, manufacturers must implement a quality assurance program that aligns with the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, meet stringent material and welder qualification standards, and submit to design reviews and on-site inspections by ASME and their authorized inspection agency. The process requires meticulous documentation, adherence to specific design calculations and material specifications, and registration with the National Board for new construction. This certification demonstrates a manufacturer's capability to design and construct unfired pressure vessels to rigorous quality standards.

| 44 | Thanks! | Alexandre Coccia de Souza | My pleasure.
| 45 | God bless you! | Alexandre Coccia de Souza | Thank you.
| 46 | You missed the very 1st question. | Anonymous Attendee | See Q29. I missed it in the live session but picked it up here.
| 47 | Thanks for sharing Sulzer impressive testing capabilities. Need to give them a try! | Anonymous Attendee | I try not to make these sessions solely an advertisement for RP. They are intended to be educational first and foremost.

| 54 | Mr. Simon I think 45 min to an hour is good; as technical persons I’m sure we’d prefer content over convenience. Complex subject can maybe be broken into smaller sessions | Roberto Carmona | Thankyou for the feedback
| 55 | I think 45 minutes- 1 hour sessions are better. No problem with English language speaking. Just speks little bit fast. Best regards | Oliver Valadez | Thankyou for the feedback. Yes I am aware I sometimes speak too fast. Something I am working on. I get overexcited at what I am doing. A bit sad really!!
