What is the AAT training? The Auricular Acu-Technician (AAT) Training for non-acupuncturistsThe Auricular Acu-Technician (AAT) Training for licensed or registered acupuncturists.
3
What is the AAT training?AAT training is a 30-hour weekend training split between self-study and in-person training. Trainees must complete practice treatments on 40 ears during supervised clinical hours following didactic portion of training. Trainees need to attend at least 2 of these practice sessions, but may attend more at no additional cost. Additional clinical hours provided to comply with state law, if necessary. There will be a quiz on the self-study portion of the course material. All requirements must be completed within one year from date of training in order to receive certificate. Complete a 14 unit CEU via POCA's online classes. Read material, take and pass quiz to become "certified". L.Ac's who wish to practice and document 5NP are invited to the monthly supervision calls.

Curricular content:In person curriculum includes: safety, clean needling technique, ear anatomy, point location and indications for 5-needle protocol and clinical practice. Classroom and take-home study materials include: neuroscience of trauma, root causes of addiction, harm reduction, trauma-informed care, history of auricular acupuncture in the US, state regulations for practicing ear acupuncture.Self-study online course curriculum includes: neuroscience of trauma, social and structural determinants of of addiction, harm reduction, trauma-informed care, history of auricular acupuncture in the US, state regulations for practicing ear acupuncture, 5NP location, applications, and implementation, review of safety and clean needling technique.

When do I practice needling?5-needle protocol (5NP) location and needling practice is part of weekend training, but trainees must attend at least 2 additional clinical practice sessions within a year. Additional supervision/mentorship for Auricular Acu-Techs setting up clinics is available; speak to your trainer about this.L.Ac's have many options for practicing 5NP if it is new to them: in their practice, offering free or low-cost ear clinics, partnering with a community organization to host an ear clinic, etc.
6
7
Is the training all you need to get a certificate? An AAT certificate of completion requires that trainees complete the didactic portion (classoom and self-study, must pass quiz) plus auricular acupuncture practice treatments on 40 ears within a year. Trainees for whom there is no nearby clinical practice sessions may be able to arrange alternative supervision for the clinical portion. This should be discussed with trainer prior to registering. yes, if active POCA member at the time of training
8
How much does this cost?Affordable training for AAT is a priority, our goal is to cover the cost of the training, paying trainers, supervisors and mentors for their time. Materials/supplies, a training manual and a POCA membership are included in the cost of the training. Cost for trainings is set by the trainers and may vary depending on facility costs. Our goal is to keep the weekend course plus several options for in person clinical supervision sessions affordable. Scholarships may be available. *Additional in-person supervision hours, may be charged as a separate fee, (e.g. post-POCAfest AAT training). Materials fee is included in registration fee. $75 for the online CEU course.
9
Do I have to be a POCA member to do this training? Part of your tuition goes to a one-year POCA membership. After that it's up to you if you want to renew, but hopefully you will! There's so many benefits to being a POCA member including access to support/supervision for trainees and AATs.You don't have to be a POCA member to take the L.Ac. CEU course for CEU credits and receive a certificate, but you will be required to be a POCA member in order to begin the process of becoming a trainer. Requiring POCA membership before beginning the process of becoming a trainer is to ensure that trainees will have access to online mentorship, and to be able use the discussion forums, and wikis and to help contribute to the POCA knowledge commons.
10
Can I really practice 5NP ?Depending on where you live (link to state laws)Yes- as a licensed acupuncturist you do not need separate license to practice 5NP.

What are the requirements for being a clinical supervisor?Clinical supervisors must be either employees of a POCA clinic or have completed the AAT training. They also need to be POCA members.
20
What if I already have a certificate from NADA? Can I still become a POCA AAT Trainer?Yes! We'd love that. You can get an AAT certificate via either of the tracks above and then start the process to become a trainer. You don't have to complete clinical practice to receive your certificate. If you choose to complete the online CEU instead of an in-person training, you must email the Ear Circle at allears@pocacoop.com and be a POCA member in order to get a non-L.Ac. AAT certificate.
21
How do I become an AAT trainer? In order to become an AAT trainer, you must: 1. Get an AAT Certificate of Completion through either of the processes described above and be a POCA member. 2. Co-teach 2 other AAT trainings with a trainer mentor. 3. Complete online training for trainers (available soon!) and 4. submit an application to become a trainer to the POCA Ear Circle. Contact the Ear Circle at allears@pocacoop.com to get connected with a trainer-mentor. Application available at https://drive.google.com/file/d/1mMnrudxuq-7gM6FOAltaeCWmp3_c0Ssl/view
22
What are the expectations of AAT trainers?AAT trainers agree to maintain POCA membership and to facilitate one of the monthly supervision calls each year. Trainers must lead one training per year to maintain active registration, and will need to re-apply to become a trainer if they go longer than that without training. All AAT trainings must be listed on POCA website with price listed or the Ear Circle must be alerted if the training is not open to the public. Trainers pay POCA $50 per training (as well as trainee membership fees when necessary) in order to have trainees received AAT certificates from POCA. AAT trainers must submit post training surveys from each trainee and the Ear Circle may plan an evaluation with a trainer depending on the content of the surveys.
23
What is POCA's role in trainings?POCA's continuing education unit or CEU Maven prepares and submits paperwork so that acupuncturists can receive credits for this training. For non-acupuncturist trainees, POCA issues and tracks certificates, and offers a range of member benefits to trainees and AATs including a discussion forum with hundreds of acupuncturist and patient/community members. Trainers must submit a $50 administrative fee to POCA for each training.
24
Does POCA collect fees/tuition for AAT trainings? No, trainers collect these fees and pay a fee to POCA.
