Answer format
4
If you look at the "Answer Key" or "Fast Money Key" sheets, you will see answers in a very particular format:
5
[A[B(E/RAHAM)]+]LINCOLN
6
The game uses a few different rules to validate these answers:
7
(/) - The "group", has several slash-separated texts that the user can enter, example: (A/B/C) will allow "A", "B" or "C", but not "AB", "AC", etc
8
[] - The "optional group", all of these are allowed to be eliminated from the answer, example: A[B(E/RAHAM)] will allow "A", "ABE", or "ABRAHAM"
9
* - The "optional asterisk", ignores any characters in this position, example: "*RAHAM" will allow "RAHAM" or "GRAHAM"
10
+ - The "optional space", this is like a space character, but it does not have to be included in the answer, example: "A+LINCOLN" will allow "ALINCOLN" and "A LINCOLN"
11
abc..- Any lowercase letters are optional, example: SOCKs will allow "SOCK" and "SOCKS"
12
13
There are some characters in answers that do not exist on the keyboard menu in game. These can be ignored.
14
On some particular questions, there are two conflicting answers, for example [HAIR+]BRUSH and [TOOTH+]BRUSH. In these situations the optional group must be entered.
15
In general the game will allow excluding up to (but not including) half the letters in the answer, for answers longer than 3 characters. For example, "SOCK" can be trimmed to "SOC", but not "SO"
16
17
Question selection
18
Whenever a new match begins, a question group will be selected at random from the set.
19
The initial question group is determined by the frame on which you press start on the 'START'-screen after bootup as well as the 'START'-screen after each match is won.
20
Exactly which group you will get depends on your hardware.
21
22
A "Question group" consists of 8 consecutive questions from the Answer Key tab.
23
An example question group is the 'buffered group' for Bizhawk (the group selected if you buffer all inputs at bootup):

Next question selection
40
When you've answered a question, a new question will be selected. The game will pick one of the 8 questions following the question you just answered,
41
As an example, let's say that you are given the question "COLOR FOR A CAR INTERIOR" from the earlier picture. This means that the next question will be one of these:

Fast Money Question selection
57
After each family there is a "Fast Money" segment. In this mode you are given multiple questions in quick succession and must give one answer per question.
58
Which questions you are given against the first family is based on the group of questions you were given at the start of the family match.
59
60
For the question group in the previous examples, you would end up with these questions in fast money:
61
62
63
64
65
66
67
68
69
70
71
It will first ask "NAME THE SEASON YOU MOST LOOK FORWARD TO", and after that "NAME AN EXTRA PEOPLE WANT ON A NEW CAR", and so on.
72
In order to make this easier there is also a "Fast Money Key" sheet tab which presents the Fast Money questions in a way that I feel is easier to read:
73
74
75
76
77
In this view you look up the first Fast Money question, and then answer each value from 'Round 1'.
78
If there is a red number next to the Round 1 answers, this means that you will not reach $200 in one round. You will have to find the best questions to answer in Round 2 to meet the deficit.
