BEFORE THE RACE
5
1. SetupEnter the event name, date, venue, class, promoter, chief referee and permit number (these print on the Results). Check the race settings: qualifying runs (1 or 2), max differential (1.5 s unless the special regulations change it), National Championship (caps the bracket at 32), and bracket size (leave on Auto).
6
2. RosterOne rider per row: bib, last name, first name, team, and Rider Type (Collegiate or Domestic). The start order is drawn automatically. To re-draw, change the Draw Seed number on Setup. Once the start list is posted, add any late registrants with 'Y' in the Late Entry column so they go to the back and nobody else moves. The Event Summary box on the right shows rider counts and bracket size as you go.
7
Start ListThe Start List tab is the printable qualifying start order with the event info at the top. Print it and post it before qualifying.
8
QUALIFYING
9
Qualifying course1-run qualifying: ALL riders race the SAME course (pick Right or Left on Setup) so every time is comparable. 2-run qualifying: each rider does ONE run on EACH side, Right and Left, and is seeded on the combined time (7H4(a)).
10
3. QualifyingRiders appear in start order. Enter run times in seconds (e.g. 32.418). If a rider DNF / DNS / DSQs, pick it from the status dropdown; they're eliminated (5E2(a)(i)). With 2-run qualifying, the seed time is the sum of both runs. If two riders tie, the Note column asks for a coin flip: enter 1 for the winner, 2 for the loser.
11
4. SeedingRead-only. Shows the seed order and the bracket size (Appendix B1). Fastest qualifier rides the slowest qualifier in the first round; extra bracket slots become byes for the top seeds.
12
ELIMINATION ROUNDS
13
5. Round sheetsOnly the rounds your bracket needs are active; the others say NOT USED. Names fill in automatically: you never copy or type names. For each heat, enter each rider's time on Run 1 and Run 2. If a rider jump-starts, misses a gate, or crashes, choose PEN / DNF / DNS in the status column; they get the max differential for that run (5E2(c), 8F4). For a PEN, also pick the reason in the Infraction column. Gap and Penalty are shown in separate columns so it's clear how each rider's total was built.
14
How a heat is decidedEach run, the loser is charged the time gap (capped at the max differential). A rider who wins both runs advances. On a 1–1 split, the smaller total differential advances. A tie on differential goes to the lower combined time, then to the Run 2 winner (5E2(e)–(f)).
15
Judge callsIf neither rider has a clean run, the sheet can't pick the winner and the Note column says so. Put W in that run's Ref W column for the rider the officials award the run to (e.g. the one who went farther, 5E2(e)(iii)). A W in a Ref W column always overrides the times.
16
6. FinalsSmall final (3rd/4th) is Heat 1, big final (1st/2nd) is Heat 2. Semifinal losers and winners drop in automatically.
17
REF-CALLS MODE (NO TIMING)
18
When to use itSet Setup > Timing method to Ref calls when there is no timing system. The ref calls the winner of each run; nothing is timed.
19
SeedingNo timed qualifying. Optional: put a Seed Rank (1 = top) on the Roster from series points or a previous race. Ranked riders seed first, everyone else follows in the random-draw start-list order. Mark DNS / DSQ in Run 1 Status on the Qualifying sheet for anyone who won't race.
20
HeatsFor each run, put W in that run's Ref W column next to the winner. A PEN / DNF / DNS loses the run automatically. A rider who wins Run 1 and Run 2 advances.
21
Run 3 (tiebreak)On a 1-1 split the Heat Result shows Run 3 and the R3 columns open. The higher seed picks a course (enter it in R3 Course on the top row; the other rider gets the other side). Mark the W in Ref W R3. Winner advances.
22
Rules noteA third run on a 1-1 split is a format change from 5E2(e)-(f). 5E2 is written as guidelines, so put it in the special regulations or announce it at the riders' meeting.
23
ResultsSame order as timed (big final, small final, round reached), but within a round riders are ordered by seed instead of qualifying time. No Qual Time column.
24
RESULTS
25
7. ResultsFinal classification per 5E2(i): big final, small final, then by round reached, then by qualifying time. Within a round, DNF ranks ahead of DNS. Riders who completed qualifying but didn't make the bracket follow in qualifying order. Riders who DNF/DNS/DSQ'd in qualifying are listed separately without a place. Put Y in the Roster 'Disciplinary DSQ' column to remove a rider (5E2(j)); everyone below moves up.
26
Provisional resultsUntil every heat is decided, the Results sheet shows a PROVISIONAL banner.
27
Collegiate + domesticMixed fields race together in one bracket. Results show the overall Place and a Coll. Place that ranks only collegiate riders, for conference scoring.
28
PrintingThe Results sheet carries all the event info from Setup (venue, promoter, permit, chief referee, format) and prints only the rows with riders, fit to page width. Print it and post it.
29
ABBREVIATIONS
30
PENPenalty. Elimination rounds only. Use it for a false/jump start, missed gate, not getting both wheels around a gate, changing lanes, interfering with the other rider, or finishing without the bike (8F4). The rider loses that run and is charged the max differential.
31
DNFDid Not Finish. The rider started but didn't complete the run (e.g. crashed out). In qualifying: eliminated. In a heat: loses that run and is charged the max differential.
32
DNSDid Not Start. The rider didn't take the start. In qualifying: eliminated. In a heat: loses that run and is charged the max differential. In the results, DNS ranks behind DNF in the same round.
33
DSQDisqualified. Qualifying only: any 8F4 infraction in qualifying is a DSQ and the rider is eliminated. For a disciplinary DSQ from the whole event, use the Roster column instead (5E2(j)).
34
Ref W R1 / R2 / R3Ref-calls mode: the W marks who won that run. Timed mode: an officials' award that overrides the times.
35
Run 3Ref-calls mode only: the third head-to-head run used to break a 1-1 split. R3 Course = the side the top rider takes.
36
WWin, typed in a Ref W column. Officials award that run to this rider, overriding the times. Used when neither rider had a clean run or for a dead heat.
37
Diff / DifferentialWhat the loser of a run is charged. Total Diff = both runs added up (gaps + penalties); the smaller Total Diff wins the heat.
38
GapR1 Gap / R2 Gap: the time gap between the two riders when both ran clean, capped at the max differential (1.5 s by default).
39
PenaltyR1 Penalty / R2 Penalty (shaded red): the max differential charged because the rider had a PEN, DNF or DNS on that run, or lost it on a judge's call.
40
InfractionWhy a PEN was given (8F4): False start, Missed gate, Wheels inside gate, Changed lanes, Interference, Finished without bike, or Other (you can type your own).
41
Run 1 / Run 2 result: W, L, TW = won the run, L = lost the run, T = dead heat (no differential charged), BYE = no opponent, ? = needs a judge call.
42
ADV / OUTHeat Result. ADV = advances to the next round; ADV (bye) = advanced with no opponent; OUT = eliminated in this round.
43
BYEEmpty bracket slot when there are fewer riders than the bracket size. The top seeds get the byes and advance automatically.
44
TBDTo Be Decided. The heat that feeds this slot hasn't finished yet.
45
SeedQualifying rank. Seed 1 = fastest qualifier. The first round pairs the fastest with the slowest.
46
R64 / R32 / R16 / QF / SFRound of 64, Round of 32, Round of 16, Quarterfinals, Semifinals.
47
Big Final / Small FinalBig final decides 1st and 2nd (semifinal winners). Small final decides 3rd and 4th (semifinal losers).
48
Coll. PlaceCollegiate place: rank among collegiate riders only, skipping domestic riders. Used for conference scoring.
49
Collegiate / DomesticRider Type on the Roster. Collegiate = racing for a school team. Domestic = non-collegiate USA Cycling entry.
50
Right / LeftThe two courses. Riders swap sides between Run 1 and Run 2 in every heat. Use Right/Left no matter what color the course markings are.
51
DS / USACDS = Dual Slalom. USAC = USA Cycling. Rule numbers like 5E2 and 8F4 refer to the USAC Rulebook.
