There's no compelling reason to use it, that is, no one I know uses it or cares.

Not enough widespread adoption, Google stopped supporting federation so any potential GChat contacts were lost. Generally use Skype, Hangouts or WhatsApp.

No one else I know uses it. I use Google Hangouts, Facebook Messenger, Signal, and Slack for most messaging.

No one I know uses it. I don't want to build anything on top of it because the presence and service discovery model suits a narrow set of use-cases in my experience.

I use iMessage, Signal, Facebook Messenger because that's what people I communicate with use.

XMPP is not geard toward asynchronous communication. I use blog, reddit, forums, and email instead of instant messaging. For emergency contact, I still use phone calls and SMS.

For better or worse, proprietary centralized systems are unilaterally superior. I prefer iMessage.

I haven't known anyone actively using it in 10+ years.

Poor federation support where it exists, lack of existing use. I use Slack, LINE, Discord, iMessage, Facebook Messenger.

IRC. I'm stuck with whatsapp though, normie friends.
