Event: Cambridge Winter Head – rowing race

The Winter Head is an annual rowing event run on the Cam organised by the committee of the Cantabrigian Rowing Club. The Club Safety Advisor is on this committee.

Marshalls

A team of volunteer marshals is organised by a Race Committee Chair, based at race HQ on Stourbridge Common. Marshalls are in communication with each other by radio. A list is also held of mobile phone numbers as a second line of communication.

Depending on the location of each marshal, they will be issued with yellow tabard, radio, loudhailer, foil blanket, location details (for instructing emergency services).

Instructions are issued for the following:

to competitors: race instructions, outlining circulation patterns and details of the course, welfare policy

to marshals: a briefing on circulation patterns and race timetable, together with a start order listing the crews.

to drivers of towing vehicles: notes on use of Stourbridge Common

The course

The course is as used for most races on the Cam, starting from the A14 bridge and going 2500m upstream to Stourbridge Common. This allows sufficient area for turning and holding crews before the start of each division. Numbered posts provide markers for each crew to position themselves.

Use of public space

Race HQ is based on Stourbridge Common, which is hired from Cambridge City Council. A statement of intent and a risk assessment accompany the hire agreement.

The towpath can be used by bank parties to follow crews. This is outside the scope of control of the race organisers, but it should be observed that the towpath is wide and bank parties are usually a single cyclist.

Signs are placed at the beginning and end of the course to indicate to other towpath users that an event is in progress. The Cam Conservators are responsible for the waterway, and other river users are notified via a diary of events. River users usually know to contact the race organisers ahead of the day if they require navigation through the event. This can then be coordinated to minimise disruption.
