I recommend them alone950Toronto, Canada2020-2023I had a great time my first year there, had a great leader that worked with me. This was for a season 2 of a already done series. Organization for new series are quite messy and HR doesn't know how what is required for people to qualify for a leadership role. Some leads abuse their power. Sometimes they get abused themselves because of circumstances. Either take one for the team, or make your team take it for you. I did senior level work without reflected pay as I was still a junior at the time. I was improving quite a lot but then being told I wasn't improving at all was very unmotivating and saddening for me. I almost want to quit drawing. Brown Bag does say they care about health/wellness but after being diagnosed and given doctors note, they still let me go. Not sure if they really cared or didn't want to deal with it any more.

Lots of lovely skillful people, occasional rotten apples in higher positions showing abusive behavior towards production staff with no consequence despite continuous flags to HR. Good salary only if you get into leading positions. Name a high salary expectation on applications because it's very hard to get a decent raise afterwards, and there's a mentality of guilt shaming when negotiating/talking about salaries. An overall problem in Ireland is the rise of rent so Kilkenny isn't as cheap as it was a few years ago and the studio hasn't raised is junior rate for a few years. There is a bit of a disconnect with HR and the productions and if you need any special working needs it can be tricky to get it.

Recent perks are they studio does offer a pension plan. Working hours are 9-5. Habrid working is an option but only in the Kilkenny county area. People I've worked with have all be lovely individuals.

What disappointed me was to see how the studio handled problems that were reported early in the production and never got solved. HR says they are open to listen but in reality nothing gets done. In general the projects are nice and the people I worked with are great, I did learn a lot there, so I would recommend it. BUT the payment is not good for how expensive Ireland is now. If you want to live on your own it's almost impossible to save money. :( I also think they should be more open to let people work fully remote, specially for cases when the contract is short.

Often you'll be at work for 10+ hours a day during crunch, which often you'll go without dinner breaks because you'll be waiting for communication between departments. Crunch usually lasts several months. Artists can work 7 day weeks if the project has been seriously mismanaged. If you like Marvel/DC you'll probably enjoy your time here more. Your experience really is dependent on the team and project you get - but you don't get a say in what you get placed on. Artist handling is often mismanaged and projects go understaffed since there's always multiple projects happening. Also almost always staffed on more than one project so overtime gets overwhelming. It feels like no one except post is held to a schedule, and it is clear that animation is the darling. The projects are aggressively fine, the pipeline is fine. Everything is a mess. It has only gotten worse with remote work/WFH, especially because production staff have issues. Hard to get a clear answer from anyone, lack of communication, remote prod staff make life hard because they don't know what's happening day-to-day.

However, the pay is less than what it should be. Retention is becoming a problem thanks to outsourcing. Quality from vendors is terrible- not because the vendor studios are bad, but because they're not paid enough and are not given near enough time. Poor leadership. Creatively unfulfilling. If you can stick around long enough, there's holiday bonuses. Occasionally Margie tells us we did a good job.

HR covers up employees being sexually assaulted by higher management with payouts and shady NDAs, and HR is friends with the owner and management. Studio hired someone who groomed and sexually harassed new employees for 7-8 years, a team lead who harassed and abused his position of power over the young female employees he hired, and a stalker who I think is still employed there. Studio also hires union busters, and has had an unlawful labor practice lawsuit filed against them and deemed guilty for pushing NDAs intended to stop employees from speaking out negatively against them. Would not recommend ever working there unless management undergoes a complete overhaul.

However the work culture here is so stressful and toxic that I have seen it put artists off the animation industry as a whole, if not quit the creative field altogether. They are also willing to hire the right candidate from outside of Georgia, but you must relocate to secure work, and the moving stipend is $500. Benefits are admittedly solid, Aetna health, dental, vision, and more while you are working. However hiatuses regularly last 1/4 of the year due to the studio failing to stagger the work schedule. Enter at your own risk.

The projects are incredible and the workers are amazing, but the incredibly low pay and sometimes backbreaking work left people exhausted and unable to progress in their fields. In the 4 years that I worked there I saw the average pay remain stagnant while the average workload increased. Supervisors often don't help this culture, with many of them obtaining their roles and setting poor examples by working long, late hours. The studio is very understanding if you're vocal about what is reasonable to expect and is capable of working with its workers, but with how young and inexperienced many of the workers are they struggle to know what they need to communicate and the onus is on management to take steps to improve working conditions before workers need to ask for it. Veteran artists rarely come into the studio any more to meet their younger counterparts, creating a disconnect between the seniors and juniors

For anyone who hasn't worked at Flying Bark, I would recommend it. To anyone working at Flying Bark, I recommend quitting and working elsewhere for some time so you can get a better idea of what you deserve.

Artists in my department are overworked, underpaid, and under appreciated. The supes are programmed to care only about the number of shots completed, no matter what it takes. I’ve witnessed and (personally experienced myself) employees breaking down in front of a supe only for the supe to downplay or straight up ignore it only to redirect the focus back on making sure the shot you’re assigned gets done. It’s an unhealthy environment so please avoid if you care about your sanity. Due to this, they continue to they say that they want to hear your ideas but in reality, they just want execute only their creatively unfulfilling ones. They look down on every existing department except story. It's very insulting that this leadership aren't aware of designers' strength. Lots of WORK, they expect you to OT UNPAID, very short contract (max 3 months), the time frame to finish is 1 day with reviews every other day. Their expectations are to pause your life/miss out to finish their one assignments. Prod/Coord system is so messy, they don't update you when new materials pops up but will continue to blame you when you miss out on this info. HoC once used to exciting projects but currently the path they're on are a bunch of clique-y unprofessional leadership with tons of creatively unfulfilling projects.
