How often do you join building events?
Rate the frequency of building events (jobs) so far in 2023. From last years survey, the build team agreed to aim for 1 job per week.

Between Jan & June 2022 there were 27 jobs
Between Jan and 14th May 2023 there were 70 jobs. That's an average of ~4 per week.
What would make you more likely to join in with building on MCME?
Rate the large build day events run in 2022 and 2023 so far. From last years survey, the build team agreed to aim for 2 build days a year.

For those who can't remember, these are the past build days:
2022 - The Anduin between Marble Hill & Pelargir
2022 - The fishing villages at the Isen Estuary
2023 - Agar build day
2023 - Moria West build day
What kind of build days would you like to see in future?
How would you like new projects and revamps to be chosen?
What do you think of the ratio of new projects to revamps on MCME (currently 1:6)?
Rate both building progress & quality improvements on the server since July 2022. Consider the number of completed projects, how long they took, whether they were new or revamps, and the overall quality of the build.
Note: for the purposes of this survey, progress is being defined as something entirely new being added to the server that was not there before e.g. Isen Fishing village, Beorn's House etc.

What parts of the feedback from the community do you think were used well from last years survey?
What parts of the feedback from the community do you think were not used well from last years survey?
Would you want to be involved in decisions on what projects get built?
Do you know where to go to find info on how to apply for ranks (Guide, Artist, Foreman, Manager, Designer) or team roles (Media Team, Video Team, Music Team etc)?
Are there any ranks/roles you feel are particularly effective/ineffective? Please give an explanation with your answer.

By requirement. New projects create interest and continue valuable server progress towards our goal. Revamps should only be undertaken if absolutely necessary, and as such must be compared across all other projects completed or otherwise. In-progress projects should take priority.

On one hand placeholders provide a sneak peak at a how a project could turn out, however may set expectations too early before the actual project has started.

I think placeholders are fine because then there can be something for new players to look at, and even if it isn't to the standards of builds today, it will be better than a lot of older locations we have currently, like almost all of Eriador.

Separation of Valar roles. It just highlights some valar roles are clearly not fit for purpose and the reshuffle has been designed only to prolonge the term of current valar.
Designer role has no accountability, seems to be a role for years rather than a specific project.
Manager does not communicate well, 2/3 of this team in my opinion do not meet requirements to be a manager, little communication outside of team.
Guide needs to bring back activity checks.
Slim down the entire team, remove all inactive members.
Be transparent with the community, there needs to be a more easily accesible point of contact for staff as the majority are showing offline on discord so new players simply do not know they exist.
Less revamps, more new projects, purge inactive people, keep the standard of events high, reduce the job count, be more transparent with team and commoners, increase plater retention through New Player Hub. I hope this year some of the survey gets taken on board.

No. If you're going to spend time and manpower while the server has it available, spend it on something you have reason to believe you'll be happy keeping for a long time. This placeholder talk likely wouldn't be happening in the first place if builds and revamps people actually wanted and asked for were being built.
The quality of the builds is very good, probably never better in MCME's history. The amount of jobs now available is staggering, and I've only heard good things about the build days. The things Staff have chosen to focus on building, however, leave many members of the server incredulous. The idea that places like Linhir and Agar/Udul needed revamps enough to prioritize them over newer builds or locations known better to the average LotR fan is as laughable as the idea that revamps count as progress. Much of this debacle can be blamed on the everlasting Forest Update, and that's certainly what many builders and Staff have claimed. Clearly, however, this update has taken too long to justify the time builders have practically wasted on filler projects. It would've been better, I imagine, to simply continue building new builds as usual to be simply updated later, should an update be necessary, with the Forest Update's release.
I would also like to point out the discrepancy between the lengths of some projects. The East Gate revamp, West Gate revamp, Cair Andros revamp, and Gladden Fields Revamp all feel overdue and slow-moving. Projects like Linhir, A&U, and Anorien (finally...) are all, by comparison, going at a pace that feels reasonable, and, in some cases, even better.
While it is true that many factors, some uncontrollable, can contribute to a slow project, the sheer ratio of inactive/slow-moving projects to paced ones is leaving a lot to be desired.
Hopefully, this feedback will, if anything, at least give some higher up an idea of a Commoner's outlook on the current state of the MCME as a project.
Rarely20-30 mins30-45 mins
If PvP counts (it isn't covered by the mini-games badge), it's a favorite. Hide and Seek if PvP doesn't count.
Since MCME doesn't generally have as many players as it used to in, say, 2021 or early 2022, perhaps we need a mini-game or two that are well-suited for fewer players? I haven't any ideas, admittedly, but it's food for thought.
A new parkour maze event like in 2020. Wouldn't take builders to build it, just Guides and Commoners in FreeBuild.
Not if they don't have the audience for them. To go further, I'd go as far as to say Ring Hunt, for me at least, has felt stale for years.
Just more creativity involved from the host to make things interesting and different.
To elaborate on my previous point, right now, PvP games don't feel special, as they're just the usual PvP we've had since 2020 when the PvP server came back online. Hey, if you like it, that's fine, but why not spice things up from time to time with entities or splash potions? Just a thought.
Anything but textures specifically for an unwanted revamp. Maybe Elven for Grey Havens? Mordor textures (unless those have been made and are locked unnecessarily behind a "Forest" Update)?
Locations on the Fellowship path and particularly large locations should be prioritized. No opinion beyond that.
No pings, but especially if the video in question is literally just a short. That's ridiculous. At that point, don't even announce it.

The Media Winners feel like a lottery. Picking a couple of screenshots from a month's worth of content guarantees vast amounts of good shots will be left out. At times, it feels like it's purposefully trying to only show off a single shot person, and only rarely two. While that can make sense given the constraints on how many shots are being shown, it also feels like it takes away from a person who truly earned having more than one or two shots showcased. Due to all this, I simply don't take the Media Winners seriously anymore.
The screenshotting culture is very important to MCME both historically and I dare say at present. If you aren't going to do the screenshotters the service they deserve of truly showing the best shots the month had to offer from the best screenshotters this community has to offer, I believe I can safely say that I will not stick around much longer in the screenshots channels.

It would be nice to have more explanation given for projects that are put on hold or otherwise going very slowly.

The events and some project feedback seemed to have been listened to. The feedback on the texture development updates in the Times was used.
On the other hand, the revamp to new build ratio, arguably one of the most critical talking points and aspects of that poll, has only felt like its gotten worse over time. Make no mistake, that's a massive misstep.
10Yes
I'd like to go out of my way to praise the rank system on MCME. It's been refined over the ~13 years the server's been around, and it shows. I haven't a single complaint for a particular role/rank. We can call people out as being less than active enough to warrant having the rank, but the ranks themselves are excellent. The application processes, though... that's a different story.
Maybe the Guides should have some more responsibility with their role? Just to play devil's advocate. If the Guides are all being checked from time to time to ensure their activity is reasonable, then the current system is all well and good for them.
More unique and bigger videos from the Video Team, please. A short hardly feels like a worthy replacement for a proper video, but if that's all the manpower allows for, oh well.
I'd frankly appreciate an apology from the people behind the decision to do such a large texture update once the update's out.
The server could benefit from some entities, even if they aren't interactive custom ones.
Music Team content feels like its slowed. It's not a big deal, but it's strange how nothing's been said about that.
Give Stephen a medal for all his hard work and for this survey, for Heaven's sake. And make it a better medal than "Best Guide" this time.

Its nice to see structure building like houses and stuff. Much more interesting building then roads and blockmixing.
Community as a whole vote on like half a dozen projects they might like to see (potentially chosen from bart's initial list) every 6 months. When a project is finished and designers are thinking about what to do next, they should take extreme suggestion from those voted on projects.
15
If it is an acceptable quality, yea. If someone puts in the time and effort to create something like Cirith Ungol or other small build just in freebuild and it holds up to current build standards, what hurts to add it to the map? Whoever ends up leading a real Cirith Ungol project or something can delete the placeholder just as quickly or even use the placeholder and just update it to what they want. People shouldn't really be going around building placeholder to have them as placeholders, but people have inspiration and the dedication to build something like that at times.

guide :/ they pretty dead right now. There is practically nothing they do right now that others don't also do. I don't necessarily think they need to be the only ones doing those things, tours, minigames, events, helping in chat, etc, but they need to be exceling and leading in those fields. Eg. this survey shouldn't be done by a commoner. The Guide purpose is to provide links in the community, and they're not doing that anymore than just a normal, much less stephen-level, commoner.
Should be more strict with team inactivity, especially guide/staff. Team needs to suck up to losing access to a few channels if they know they dont do anything or won't be able to for a few months. its honestly not that hard to come back and ask the respective head valar for what they need to do to get the rank back, which very often isnt hard unless you've been gone for a long time. 15What are holder builds?
We only have limited ressources and time to spend on projects. Theres only two ways we can even hope of finishing the servers builds within our lifetime: Either we maximise the efficieny of our ressources or we maximise the ressources themselfs (more builders). So in general i dont see any use in revamps exept if these builds activly make the reputation of our server worse, becouse what actually makes the reputation of our server worse IS A CERTAIN LACK OF MORDOR!!!
Also, this idea of reincarnating MCME Build School is an amazing opportunity that cant be missed. A lot of people tell me their problem with getting artist is mostly a craftsmenship problem. Even if theyre quite good builders with rp v they have no confidence whatsoever for building on MCME. Why is that? Cuz they are unprepared. Give them a chance to learn our build styles from the pros and very soon we'll have twice the amount of builders ready.

I think they are quick a dirty ways to get everyone excited for an area but for places like Minas Morgul being a placeholder for years now is a little misleading, or distracting. I like them as they fill out the space but may get in the way.
An open Forum for how soon to be projects may look like Harad (for example), bringing the community in to outline the style and organise what we would expect could get more people overall involved in the process and building. From what I see now it is three people with a firm idea from the get go making it all behind the scenes which is fine but would be interesting to open it up.

The staff (mainly the Valar) should start to act more like the staff of a community server, instead of just proclaiming it and then acting in an opposite way. They could start by not deciding to keep a lot of things secret, but communicating it to the wider server. This is a Minecraft server for crying out loud, not a company or state. If the staff doesn't know how to do that, they should employ someone who knows who to lead and communicate properly
Yes2
I didn't really see staff (again mainly the Valar) taking anything from the survey. It seemed to me they went ''that is nice dear'' when they received it and continued on their merry ways. Most of the slight improvements happened in my eyes because of effort of individuals, like the foremen stepping up the amount of jobs or some of designers trying to organise more build days.

It would only be logical to me to ask the community to vote, within a selection. I think we should have a main axis of building, like the anduin river, and spread out from there in ithilien, in rohan etc. So there is less of a disconnect.

Sometimes I don't get the distinction between foremen and artists. To me foremen are just artists who do a bit more planning and supervision, as far as I see things. More jobs with Ayla

Jobs that include building structures instead of just blockmixing them (e.g. when running a wall job let people create the walls themselves instead of giving them finished walls and telling them to just swap out blocks.).

jobs that are more integrated (building multiple steps of a project in a given area instead of one singular task over a big area, e.g. when doing a street job not only blockmixing the street, but also including steps for vegetation and detailing for example).

Both of these ideas could make jobs less repetitive and give people a bigger sense of accomplishment.
i understand that running jobs this way can take more preparation, be more difficult and may also take more cleanup time afterwards, but i think this way people will learn more about the building process on MCME, join jobs more often, and be more motivated.
9
Creating villages or parts of villages from a certain base to relative completion. Possible maybe in the Gladden Fields, Moria and in the Old Pukel Land.
The community should at least be involved in the process, but otherwise both projects and revamps should focus on the Fellowship path and well known areas for now.
36
If a placeholder exists, it should stay on the map, or even be pasted in if it hasn’t bern already. But no official resources should be spent on creating new ones.
Too many projects at once: The build team is currently spread out over too many projects, leading to stagnation in a lot of them and loss of motivation. Building alone in a project is less fun than building with others.

Create build days for builders: invite builders for build days at a given project, where everyone helps out and people build together. This needs less preparation than jobs, can include more advanced tasks, and increase progress and motivation with people building together and helping each other.

Advertise plots more openly: The job boards in the Times are a good first step, regularly mentioning them in commoner chat also helps.

Guides currently are extremely ineffective due to them being held back by an inactive head guide.
allow more crossover between ranks. A rank should signify the main role of a player on the server, but not limit them. If a guide wants to build they should be able to apply for a building badge (in the same way an artist applicant would have to) without having to give up being guide. Especially because guides don’t have as many things to actively do on the server outside of events.
The same should of course go the other way, a builder should be able to apply for guide roles without having to step down from artist (With the minigames and tour badge that option already exists for the most part though).
Potentially removing the manager and designer roles could help stop people from unnecessarily clinging onto their ranks an would reduce the information barrier within the community.

If the placeholders are at a high quality standard like Minas Morgul, i don't see any problem with it. Rather it would feel a lot more interesting for adventures exploring the major lore locations and actually seeing something.
In my opinion the problem isn't revamps per se, but what kind of revamps. Revamps that completely transform a previously boring/unfinished area (Agar Udul, Gladden Fields, Anorien) are completely fine and add a lot to the server. Revamps to areas that were already fine/ relatively fleshed out compared to some other locations on the server (Linhir, Cair Andros) or add little new things (Anduin) feel a bit unnecessary.

A mix: terrain work (fix up older landscapes), vegetating new area and improving old areas, house/structure building. With a bit of careful planning, these should very much accelerate progress on projects.
3 new projects to 1 revamp. There's a massive imbalance and has been for some time. Choose projects either through popular vote if you can't be bothered to come up with a building plan, or create an actual long term plan for server progression then share it with everyone, then have little side projects chosen by vote. I'd prefer the latter.
14
It's not a question of should: MCME already does, just very inconsistently. Anyone who tells me we don't do placeholders needs to immediately go and delete Minas Morgul, because it's sat there proving you wrong. Given that clearly won't happen: we obviously do have placeholders. So It'd be nice to have some elsewhere that are relatively low effort to build. Given MCME's propensity to revamp things it'll satisfy people later on when the placeholders are replaced/upgraded when that area is started.

Large scale terrain pieces like Erebor, Mt Doom or Mirkwood are obviously not suited to being placeholders as they require far too much time and effort to complete. Smaller structures such as Beorn's House, or Rhosgobel could easily be placeholders with minimal effort. It'd make some of the empty areas of the server at least have something of interest. Also gives skilled people who don't want to work on yet another revamp something new to do.
Always do more new projects than revamps, then MCME might actually progress rather than stagnate.

Projects really need to be planned more carefully. Far too many get started, have building done and then have to be restarted because of disagreements over style, layout etc. This wastes time, effort and kills motivation to do things. Do something like this:

1.Research (lore, terrain, cultural groups/races),
2. Planning (concepts, scaled models),
3. Review of concepts and planning by team/staff,
4. Project post creation and recruitment of project staff/team
5. Full scale planning and terrain base terrain creation (terrain world or plotworld).
6. Review by team/staff.
7. Terrain development and building of base structures.
8. Transfer project to mainworld once there is enough to see
9. Complete project within timespan

Please stop putting partly started projects on main map, particularly for revamps. It makes the map look messy, spoils the experience for new people (particularly on the fellowship path) and is generally a disorganised and poor way to do things. Do preliminary building for revamps in plotworld. Replacing a revamp area with 5% of the new version is not an effective, or desireable way of doing a project.

Building/Artist school (including voxel/world edit workshops)
Yes, though these would likely require input from the wider community. I'd advocate for running these as seasonal events: e.g. runs for a Semester and then has a break
Generally the amount of events seem to have improved from the previous year: nice work and thank you people who run events.

Make a public calendar for events for the year (probably include in the back of The Times) so people know what's coming up in the next few weeks/months.
Geology update - need to take some of the rock blocks out of Rp D (which are much more varied) and put them in Rp H.

5
De-couple texture development from the building process. Far too many people have used "we're waiting on textures" as an excuse not to build something. Either have texture people put deadlines for releases so building can be planned accordingly (I don't really think this is realistic), or have the builders suck it up and build with what they've got. I don't think it's fair to pressure the texture team with "we can't build because you won't give us stuff". It's a poor excuse.
Simply don't have time sorry
Minas Morgul would be a cool location to get music. So would Rauros/Amon Hen/Nen Hithoel (the lake)
@everyone5105
Excellent work from the Times Team over the last year: the new format is really good and the project updates really help with knowing what's going on building wise.

MCME has a bit of a habit of keeping secrets when it really doesn't need to. Sure, it's nice to have surprises from time to time, but if something is being planned for the future: showcase it. It'll boost enthusiasm and dispel the perception that MCME is stagnating because it does nothing new. Keeping stuff secret because "it might not happen" is basically a poor excuse to escape from the responsibility of making that thing happen.

Create a "Jobs and Plots" board/channel/infographic where it's clear what building opportunities there are for people on MCME. Or have a dedicated channel in discord for this.
Yes5
The number of building jobs skyrocketed, so that was a huge improvement. We get regular updates on project progress, texture development etc which is really good.
The message of "we don't want more revamps" was largely ignored or given flimsy excuses by some on the build team. Then more revamps started that weren't even very popular. Basically it sent the message of "community build server ignores its community to do what a select few people want". Really not a good look to have. People are worried about player retention: this is one of the reasons why MCME doesn't keep people. If you're not going to value them, they won't stick around.

New Player World hasn't been sorted out despite desperately needing it. This is another thing that would massively improve quality of life for new players.

9Yes
Effective
I honestly think we're very lucky to have Eriol as head developer. Same for the rest of the development team who have definitely worked hard to improve MCME. There are some standout people on pretty much every team really, who clearly work very hard and have a passion for making MCME successful, fun and enjoyable. I'll name-drop Mershy, Ayla and Human as a few other examples.

Ineffective
"All who gain power are afraid to lose it, even the..." Equally, there are clearly people who cling onto ranks when they really should have stepped down because they're not doing the role effectively. Again, I can probably apply that statement to individuals on every rank. I won't name-drop these. I honestly don't see the point of having a rank if you're not doing anything with it.

One of the most ineffective things I can apply to individuals on every single rank is being able to do things within a meaningful time-frame. Tasks, projects etc take far too long in certain cases.
Clearly define what it is Foremen are meant to do. Is their main purpose to run small areas of larger projects? Is it just to run jobs and plots? Is it both of these? It's not entirely clear at the moment. Some people do one of these, others do the other...

Make Foreman (or something between Foreman and Designer) the default "experienced" building rank, and have designers as the people leading projects. When their project finishes, they become the default experienced builder rank again.

Move away from the idea that "you're a good builder, you'll be good at leading this project". It's obviously not the case: just because you're a good artist, does not mean you'll be a good designer. The ability to build and to lead something effectively are two entirely separate things.

Clearly define how Guides are different from badge holders: what are their responsibilities/obligations. Some do very little, some do lots. Are they just experienced people who'll run events from time to time?

Improve accountability for rank holders. If someone has a rank, they've chosen to have an obligation to MCME and its community. If they're not fulfilling that obligation, they shouldn't have the rank. Simple as that. The position being voluntary does not excuse people from the responsibility. Yes, real life happens, and people need a break, which is absolutely fine. But if they're away for 4 months and aren't doing anything, then they clearly aren't able to carry out the role. Some people have had the ranks and the privileges that came with it and had zero accountability to the rest of the community. Holding some people to a standard and not others simply isn't fair and creates a culture of resentment.
Make every project have a Co-Lead who isn't staff on another project. Then if the main lead is absent, the project can continue.
I cannot emphasize this enough: do new projects.

Some people are naturally good at some things and not others. Keep making opportunities to learn from each other.

OftenJust right8
Make sure there is a solid plan for a project before doing anything, picking projects doesnt really work as it also depends on someone needing to run it.
47
Depends on the context. Black Gate was for an event for the server showcasing newer resourcepack concepts, but we would then have a slippery slope of making everywhere a placeholder. Erebor, Goblin Cave, Lindon, Barad Dur countless projects that could have something but always depends on the context. Mostly, it is resourcepack, we dont have the means to make barad dur as an example.

I think focus should be on finishing off existing projects and then let the build team discuss and organize where to allocate recourses
59
Not. It is a very slippery slope; we can start with who should make the placeholders? If it is the builder team then we would be directing builders of actual projects and progress, should we then say that the commoners are the ones to make placeholders? Why should the commoners be the once? The placeholders will very obviously be of important or lore locations stuff that all the artists and builders want to build and then we just give that out to random commoner that have never put in the same amount of effort and just get it given to them on a silver platter? That is really unfair for the people that have actually put in the effort of being a builder. And then it is the problem with quality, yes you could argue that it shouldn't need to be of the highest quality so should artist and builders then go over and improve the placeholder? Well then we end up allocating builders to placeholders regardless. But not the nice part just the fixing and polishing something they themselves wanted to build.

There is also the problem with if we start using placeholders it could postpone the actually projects from starting as we may be satisfied with keeping a placeholder in the mean time. There would also be the problem with people getting attach to the placeholder so that when we get over to make the real project there people will start complain that we are destroying something that they worked on.
We need more builder applicants, and less people deterring people from applying.

artist apps should be less bureaucratic, there's a reason we only have like 3 active apps right now. One is Izaro who's determination alone should merit him getting at this point, one is Jaeger, who is so young he probably won't get it for who knows how long. Finally there is Max, no idea how that one is going. But at this rate the well is going to dry up.

I'm not much of a builder, can't do MCME style or scale, so unless someone figures out how to make automatic block mixing a thing, I'm unlikely to be of much help.
7I really don't know.
I'm going to be controversial here: New projects should be started on if the Team agrees that there's enough to start it. Revamps should require a vote, preferably using a Google form like this, on whether it should start. After all - While revamps can make things look "better" when they're done, when they're in progress, they look like a mess.
37
Yes, you should. It's easier to tell the new people asking about places, "Sorry, it's currently a placeholder until we get a proper resource pack," than it is to say, "Sorry, but hobbit builds are coming after LOTR builds are done. We're waiting on Mordor, it's only been "X" years that we've been waiting." Plus, it at least makes "visible progress" if there's a placeholder, and then later on, the placeholder gets updated with the real thing. Right now, there's a lot of empty map space where things normally should go.
Basically, my only problem is that I can't build at the needed level to be helpful. I know you're not one for "commoner only" events, but... I'd be 100% behind the idea of a "Build School" that aims to teach us non-builders HOW to build.

I don't really do PvP, I'm just a moving target for most people and a boat-anchor for my team.
Werewolf and Lore Quizzes.
Not really. I'd love more variety, but I know coding new things takes time and someone has to come up with ideas for those new things.
I mean, I'd love to see a hidden Spleef arena tucked inside one of the mountains. Keeps the visual identity of the MCME world intact, but gives us something else to do. Could even probably be given a slight Dwarven themed spin. No, I don't know how it could be done. Ice Boat Racing might be fun, but we'd need to find a place to run a race track that doesn't disrupt the rest of MCME.
I like the idea of the Ring Hunt, but I think the big thing is, there has to be a rule in place keeping it to Tolkien lore. After all, it's hard enough finding the ring when it has lore that could be looked up. For example, I had no issue with the ring hunt where it was tucked away in Goblin Town. I knew where it had to be, I just couldn't find Goblin Town because there's no warp point (or the auto-fill on warp points was broken following the 1.19.4 update so I couldn't find the warp point), so I couldn't look even though I knew where it had to be. Some of the others, however, that involved puzzles that didn't go with Tolkien or server lore, were basically impossible. I think having it run every-other-month might also make it more exciting for people, rather than it being a monthly event.
Basically, more event variety. After all, I can't do the races because I'm not fast enough with sprint jumping, I suck at parkour, I'm okay at hiding but terrible at seeking, I don't know enough to play the GeoGuessr, so I rely on the once-in-a-while Werewolf and the occasional Lore Quiz that pops up.
I know it's probably not possible, but being able to join Lore Quizzes from "other worlds" would be nice. I know they're hosted on Main for the adventurers, but sometimes I'm adventuring in Moria, or I'm working on something in Freebuild, and having to put down what I'm doing for 10 minutes (at best) of fun is often a pain.
Mordor. Let's be honest - We all want to be able to walk from Bilbo and Frodo's house to Mount Doom. At that point, you might need to have some rings laying around, or spawn one in new player inventories (and offer us old players one as well) so we can make THE journey.
7
I'd love to see it be faster, but people can only work so fast on something that is a hobby.
Between having no artistic talent and red/green (green weak) colorblindness, yeah, there's significant barriers keeping me out of texturing, and there's no way to really make that any easier.
I'm assuming "all of them" is not a suitable option? Fine. All the areas along the Fellowship Path should have music. Fangorn Forest in particular - it's easy to get spun around and lost in there, and at least a musical theme might make the experience less of a pain.
I'm basically suggesting "another Role" but also saying that pinging everyone causes alert fatigue. I have events pings on, so when I hear that notification, I'm at least looking to see whether there's a tour or a major game to play. Showing up to find it's "just" a video (no offense to the video team - they're great, but not what I came looking for) makes me just a little bit disappointed. I showed up hoping for a cool tour of some place I may not have been to. Splitting event pings between Events/Tours and PVP helped a lot. Having a separate ping for those wanting to be alerted to videos would be great.
I mean... I don't use most social media, so, nope, no ideas.
48
It'd be a huge pain, but I'd love a text-only transcript of the MCME Times to go alongside the digital magazine format. Sometimes I just want to casually scroll down and read the entire thing, and sometimes I'm interested in looking at the pictures too.
7
The current level of communication is okay. We hear when new jobs start about what kind of job it's likely to be, so someone who expected to do a little wall building or some block mixing doesn't get dragged into terrain smoothing by accident. I'd love more "advanced notice" of new, potentially interesting projects. After all, while I'm not much of a builder, knowing where to be to watch from a safe distance might be nice.

Hey, half the time I can't remember what I had for dinner last night, let alone what was discussed last year. I can only assume that things have been used well.
Like the above statement, I can also assume that small details got overlooked in the process.
8Yes
Not really. Guides give tours, Artists texture things, Foremen run build jobs, Designers come up with the cool builds, and Managers keep things running. The various "Teams" do their jobs well.
Not really. I mean, I'd love to be able to place my own boats without having to pay for it, but giving every commoner that ability might not be wise, and while I'd support the idea of a "Wanderer" rank (Commoner with the ability to place boats in specific areas of Mainworld, applied for on the Forum, voted in by those on Team, and requiring you've been a commoner for at least a year), I know it won't happen.
Not really sure what I could mention that'd improve any of it.
Well, everything's better with cookies, right? Sorry, gotta be the snarky person here.

However I feel that communications between the staff and the team has been very good recently. I think we should be encouraging people to contact staff or valar if they have concerns because some people may be scared of contacting us.

The staff and valar both had very good discussions about the whole survey and things that mcme could improve.
There were several questions which produced 'wants' that were not realistic or achievable. The next question in this survey could produce a similar problem - I expect people will want to be involved in discussions about what gets built however this is just not possible to give people what they want in this regard. What gets built depends on what staff are motivated to do and what textures are available.

I think it would be good to use placeholders on MCME. We don't really use them at the moment, but it makes some places look way emptier than they should be because we're doing revamps instead of those new projects. So I think it would be good to have at least something there, for example Erebor. A lot of new people join expecting to see Erebor. It would be very nice to have a placeholder there so that new players wouldn't immediately get disappointed and maybe even ending up leaving because we don't have their favourite location.

For Ring Hunt, I think the host would have to be a bit outgoing and remind people that they are allowed and encouraged to reach out about wanting to make clues for the hunt. Melkor did a wonderful job of it, it was sad to see Ring Hunt go after he left.
With Lore Hour, I liked how it was previously where it was run for about an hour once a week (if I remember correctly).
We should have a bit more events going weekly or monthly, and not just have a bunch during the big events like the Summer, Anniversary or Winter Events. These could be Ring Hunt, Lore Hour, Reading Hour (don't remember whether that ended or not), Movie Time or something else we might come up with.
As if. It has been going faster now, but I doubt it'll be completed anytime soon. But I would like to see better textures for the heads in the head inventory as many are very outdated. It would also be nice to do more for Mordor and fix up rp R in a way where it would look better, but you wouldn't need to rebuild everything for it to work.
9
It would be nice if we got more updates on the development. I know we get some from the Times from time to time (what a mouthful), but it would be nice if it was a monthly/bi-monthly thing.

Staff should be more open about what they're doing/planning with the rest of the Team. It is a really bad sign and fact that some Commoners know way more than half of Team because Staff doesn't bring it down to Team but to certain Commoners. It also kind of leaves us in the dark, and can be quite confusing at times.

The Build Days and Jobs, the rest was neglected by the Vala/Staff.
Everything else8Yes
When having a quite inactive Head Guide it is difficult to be one too, which is why I think there are a few Guides who are less active. To hold the rank up, there should be a motivating and active leader who is there for the Team. No hate to Smaug, he is a great Guide, I just feel like his life is maybe a bit too busy for it at the moment.
I would like the way of demotion of Artists to change, as it is now it is biased and unjustified. One example I have is Jonatanknalle's demotion. He was demoted out of the blue, and when he asked why, he was told that he hadn't been active the last month, hence the demotion. But he had been active, and had actually built in Linhir for Swe a few days before, he had also been working on Linhir in Freebuild (which was said wouldn't count cause it wasn't on Main World or in Moria).
Not only was this a very biased and straight up mean demotion, it also made a good builder and one of the nicest people on our server not want to be a part of Team anymore.
People shouldn't keep their ranks because they are well liked/old members. People shouldn't be demoted because they aren't liked by a Staff member or a Valar. Staff and Valar should be so up in their own asses.
Nope, you're doing great Stephen!

I think that there should be more focus, ie, the builders all focus on one area and all the jobs go to that place, rather than everyone being spread out. Also, setting up specific times when there will be jobs, so like you know a week in advance, theres going to be a job on Friday at 3 eastern, that would be awesome. then people can lan ahead to make time for jobs, boosting job participation and allowing progression much faster than before.

for certain areas i think it would be nice to have a placeholder, not too big but something there with signs clarifying that it's a placeholder and not the official thing. However there is danger looming with this approach. people might develop the mentality of "well, if i already started, why don't i continue?". This would stretch the available amount of people building on project out too much.
burn out often happens when individuals of the build team are overly excited to get things done or to be productive. it would be an idea to know which projects people are working on and through this possibly be able to identify when someone is running into burn out and prevent it.

I don't have any answer for this question and the next, but i'd like to point out: seeing the things that was happening in the BoM commoner project: what people vote for and want to see happen, is not necessarily what they want to help with or support. you might just end up doing things you didn't want to do, which others did want to do but just don't care to help you with.

I would give commoner more perks to make it feel more rewarding and less like being a glorified adventurer. something people see as a goal to strife for.
i don't feel like going back, though i felt being lead by quite some questions to have to answer in a certain way while a lot of the things from my point of view are more nuanced and need better clarification. a simple positive or negative question doesn't cut it. but a neutral how or a why question would probably be better.

placeholders are meaningless and a waste of time but can be interesting
while build quality is up, it feels wasted, leaving the fellowship path to suffer. I still believe this server should be as movie screen-accurate as possible with those designs being the most iconic. We need a new hobbiton, bree, rivendell, and helm's deep at the very least, and minas tirith could use some work too I feel.

Have a team member or staff member check in every once in a while on how Commoner Projects are going. It's tricky sometimes to keep a project going with only a couple people that work on it every once in a while, and having a team/staff member to help out with plans or just getting people to know about the project could really help out.

I feel like there should be a place where general info for becoming a Guide or Artist can be found. For example, guides need access to a LOT of info on the server, but there doesn't seem to be one dedicated place where everything can be found. I've started working on something that could be used in that manner because I wanna retry for guide at some point, but I would like that to be something that all wannabe guides/artists can access (specifically those roles because after that you're already well enough asserted in the community that you feel comfortable to ask almost anyone for help)
Love the server, don't think there's anything else to say though. Tried to keep this as constructive as possible though. Thank you!!

not realy because, well the server is a construction side, a WIP so I´d say we shouldnt waste time to make placeholders instead of building 'real' stuff. Its okay to have areas that arent realy build yet. Maybe If someone realy wants to build a specific building in freebuild which isnt build on main right now , the builders could deside to bring it to Main as a placeholder

i think place holder builds would be good to attract more players. I think new players are far more likely to hang around if they feel like the map (with that i mean the stuff from the movies) is at least somewhat completed

maybe a warning message can also be shown to let people know that these are only temporary placeholders

They should be chosen by a project lead assuming we have the proper textures.
58
I believe we should use placeholders in areas that make sense. We could easily make the face of Erebor with the current textures and custom inventory. However placeholders for areas that lack a custom inventory such as Mordor should not be done. If a custom inventory for Mordor were to be done then we should look at the possibilities of making more placeholder builds.
Some problems I have noticed with the building is the amount of people actually willing to build. There are plenty of commoners to do plots but not nearly enough artists. The server needs more artists as most commoners cannot do the work artists can. Although not much can be done as we are a volunteer force. I have no fixes for this issue it is just one that greatly limits the efficiency of the servers progress.

I don't know how to texture so I could just be insulting everyone on that team which is not my intention, but it seems so slow. I don't know how much that would help but that would be how I set it up if I was the king of the world.

Where a lot of people I’ve heard want to be a guide for only a specific thing there passionate about but don’t want to do all the other things so there good at one thing and completely ignore the other roles or opportunities given to them.
Not ranks but just give people more freedom and chances with the specific teams. Feel like people are really nit picky about a lot of stuff when in reality anyone can be given a shot and be given a role and let them be apart of something. Just because there on a team or rank doesn’t mean they have to host the event or make the content. They can make have a say and have a place to be and have a opinion to try to improve the server.
Give more specific roles or ranks or teams to people that deserve it and are passionate about it. And don’t judge them off overall knowledge. See there strong suite see there passions see there hobby and let them improve and be apart of the mcme server. Will boost server moral and activity so much. If you ask people they’re interests then offer them a member spot on a team or rank or job.
People need to feel like there passion and skills can be implemented into mcme and not merely blocked by a rank or test or criteria.

It would be nice to be able to get started on Mordor and such. So textures for new projects otherwise we might get stuck on revamps and all that, because we keep putting effort in making current textures better. The Mordor pack will unlock possibilities for new projects that people really want to see finished. There are always a lot of questions about whether Mordor is built or when it will be built.

Although I understand revamps, I think that build days should be exclusively large project that either didnt have much before or are completely new. The fishing villages and the Agar build days I think were good, but I think that rebooting things like Moria west or part of the anduin shouldn't be a priority for a "build day event" given there are only two in the year. I mean if one of your two build days every year is redoing somehting you already did to look better, then in my opinion they somewhat cancel each other out and then there has ony been a little bit of progress, respectively, when alternatively, if the porject was finishing something new or not very developed, I think the progress could have been about double. All of these things considered I do know that textures can take a while to develop they way the team wants and that I'm pretty sure I only joined the first of these 4 build days, though I almost joined the Agar one I think before not joining it instead.
I think revamps should be relatively smaller projects. I think linhir would be the absolute largest example of what should have focus on. As far as new projects, I think that largely has to do with textures. Similarly, I think it would be good to make plannings for things like barad dur, erebor, laketown, goblin town, before texture are set. Just rough outlines like say in thorin's hall. Although that does put some pressure on the team, I think that would be an incentive to work on getting those textures ready. This being said, it's not like I personally work on textures, so I am not sure it is worth the pressure here or not.

I think this is a great idea actually. What if there were makeshift "placeholder" builds for major locations, like the black gate or minas morgul, for things like say erebor, laketown, goblin town. THEN, have one foreman start the project and give out plots, run jobs on it and after saying the basics, have the place largely designed by artists and commoners and even some adventurers, given that its not an end product anyway. I think this would be good for community engagement. ik im having a bit of a caver moment but I think this one is good stuff, even if it has some things to be more specific about, i think its worth taking a look at.
I mean there's always conflict among staff for ideas and just in general, but I think more might get done if team members let go of their egos and stop argueing so much, its friccin minecraft for crying out loud, the convos I hear in vc make it sound like its the first years of the UN or NATO or something (uh oh politico, arrest me officer ive been really naughty)

less lag. I have reaosnable but not amazing internet but given im on the opposite side of the world the ping is just too darn high and i can't hardly move half the time
i like hide and seek for its community engagement and lore quizzes given im not terrible at those when the questions actually work
maybe adding another one?
beats me
id like lore hour to return, maybe try to read the hobbit and lotr and silmarillion all once a year. quite a steep order but I think it would be good for the community
i dont like it when @wieldablemars0 or wyattrox03 go like "join this thing" or whatever. im just kidding. i mean large events I am usually alseep for given time timezone
no
mordor or like a dwarf pack that owuld work for both thorin's hall and erebor. like cmon people (ik im people too)

beats me im not on the texture team. but having textures not take 4 years minimum might be nice for overall server development
well the textureing sub discord channel has hardly been touched in a while, does it even still exist? not to mention there is a whole stigma about people putting a lot of effort into a texture over long periods of time and for the expectations to be so high that it never matches up and I jsut don't see the point of putting a lot of time into something that isn't going to go anywhere anyway. Its like working for a restaraunt hoping to start cooking on the line eventually, but they just keep you in the dish pit forever. and you think you can work your way up to cooking, maybe dip your toes in using a frying pan or something, but they send you back. IRL ive had the pleasure of moving up form the dishpit to working as a cook, so like why would I put myself in that position, i got to find a job, i got college, i got a homelife, im an adult with bills and taxes and whatever. i would love to help but the stakes arent nearly enough in it for me
eh. music's good where they are but im not too particular on it

being semi active on youtube shorts and tiktok. maybe a cinematic showcase of individual locations with new ones each week. I think that could take a bit of effort but could gain traction and build a consistent and growing audience, and maybe, just maybe, even go viral :O

I probably know most about what staff is doing exclusively by listening to staff and team members argue and complain on the vc's. although they do it a lot and i think a lot of people are getting information that way, I do think its also pretty sad and pathetic

i think there has been slightly more in the wake of running jobs and community engagement
TOO. MANY. REVAMPS. | NOT. ENOUGH. NEW. PROJECTS.

I mean the only unique trait of guides are being held for smaller community events and pvp, but the first of those things are hardly utilized any more. and although guides would be good at answering questions, they hardly ever do because they are largely hardly ever online
give guides exclusive perms for running tours. i think this would give more people incentive to become a guide and in turn maybe inspire them to create more community engaging events. also this might be the tipping point to get stephen to become a guide
not be so darn picky about the requirements for guide and artist, like i understand for staff and whatnot to have a really solid team, but golly its friccin minecraft, artists and guides are perfect for community engagement, and yet out of the like 300,000 people that have joined the server since discord was created, theres less than 100 guides and artists right now?!

MCME should definitely add placeholder builds to some major locations. Some places which are small that could quite easily get placeholders are Rhosgobel, Beorn's Halls, Thranduils Halls.
We should ideally use more film locations as inspiration for building. The majority of players who join the server have only seen the films. Players are immediatly drawn to film locations like Minas Tirith, Helm's Deep, Isengard etc. while book locations don't seem to take a lot of player interest e.g Dol Amroth, despite being debatebly more impressive and detailed.

We also need to reduce the level of realism the server is going for, some builds may look realistic, but that does not mean they look good. The new Emyn Muil terrain looks great, however it does not look anything like the films or even how it is described in the books. Our new White Mountains done courtesy of Pacifist are another example, despite being called the "White Mountains" - there is barely any snow on them and they look incredibly boring. Please consider that we are a server based on fantasy novels/films, and that we should take risks and include fantastical elements, while maintaining a balance of realism.

Currently it's a one man show, and that man is moulding PvP around the way they personally play it, and not how the majority of players like to play it. For example, the redone Helm's Deep layout is extremely inbalanced, and has reduced the fun people have on this map. Also changes to bows/arrows have been controversial, with no community engagement or feedback taken on board.
We should make it a priority to allow proper blending between resource packs. An example of what I mean is Moria East Gate. It's currently a mess, and the rp merge has not been planned out whatsoever. We need some Dwarvern RP blocks in RP H so that some Dwarvern exteriors can be made while also using Rp H terrain/veg features.

Would also like to see more interior/decoration blocks in rp h, it currently feels very outdated and lacking.
4
More frequent, smaller updates, and engage with the community a bit more to see what blocks they would like in the pack. Also, fix broken textures/custom inventory blocks/missing custom inventory blocks.
No specific areas, however I do believe ALL music should be added on to the Audio Client. It's currently a bit of a mess having it spread out between two platforms. For example, areas in Minas Tirith have both themes playing at once. It would just be far more simple.
@everyone
Perhaps the Media Team could reach out to some YouTubers/Streamers agents to see if they would be interested in doing a showcase of our server, even if one in a hundred agree it would be worthwhile.

Please do not do interviews of "irrelevant people". For example, why was DankJive, a player who many have not even met, featured in an interview, when there are so many active players/team members who could be asked for an interview? Most likely nepotism. I would also suggest the Times Team make a list of all players who have been interviewed to ensure they are interviewed a second time (including the old times format).
4
Team just need to be more upfront with their plans. It took a whole massive forum thread for Toti to explain some critical information about his plans and processes to the wider community, why couldn't this have been shared sooner? The Times is a great method for this, but players also would not mind periodic anouncements for plans in the #anouncements channel on discord.

We definitely have improved in the build events aspect of the server.
UInfortunately the overrall feedback surround rp development and revamps have been ignored and things have continued as is.
8Yes
Perhaps allowing trusted Commoners access to additional badges like Moderator and World Edit? Since it is an application, these can always be denied by the staff team to ensure they are not being put in the hands of those who are not trusted. Some Commoners can be more well trusted than some artists.
I've noticed a large spike in Team Memebers (mostly Artists and Guides) causing disruption in games, events and pvp. Would suggest this is addressed and not ignored when it is reported to staff.
We're doing well in the Event aspect of the server, it's time to turn our attention to the builds and processes and addressed the glaring issues in this aspect that have got the community so upset.

idk i just dont have enough time, I got really discouraged when i heard that it took some people years to become an artist, then i just dipped it
erm idk :)56
So i am an adventurer for a long time now, it is because i hop on server every once in a while so im not playing long enough (in these time periods when i play) to be a commoner, so people kinda forget abt me. I sometimes go to jobs but they just dont seem fun to me because its mostly roads and stuff like that, sometimes i like to do that but mostly not fun. I was interested in becoming an artist but as I said I got discouraged a lot when I heard that it took some ppl years to apply and the fact that it takes like months to become one. All of that just makes me feel not to apply and thats why I stopped very quickly. I know its long like that for a reason, people need to be good at building, I just dont feel like getting good at it, its time consuming, SUGGESTION: maybe make some building lessons?

I only played pvp I dont know when are others played

If there were more ways to get feedback and improve in a timely manner, I would probably join more building related projects/events on MCME.
3
I would like new projects to be prioritized by their popularity within the Tolkien community as a whole such as Erebor and Mordor. If these projects can;t be started for some reason I think we should focus on revamping the oldest locations because they usually look the worst.
34
I think MCME SHOULD use place holder builds, because it gives new players something to look at AS WELL AS something to look forward to rather than just empty space.

I think there should be some changes made to PvP modes to make them more middle-earth themed. An example of this would be kits that are styled after different characters as well as more middle earth maps and more of a push for the making of these maps.
Birthday events for when certain large projects were completed on the server. These would be celebrated by running special minigames and server lore tours at those locations.
I would like to see the Mordor pack worked on as well as an update to the Rohan pack and a new corn texture.

I think it would be beneficial if there were more texture workshops/help sessions to get newer players into texturing and more familiar with texturing.
I would like to see an ambient theme created that would automatically play whenever a player isnt in a location with specified music, because this would add to the exploration that playrs experience when their in the wilderness of MCME. It would also be cool if there were some random noises like bird calls and crickets added as an option for "music".

We could post more videos and clips of our events, pvp, tours, and minigames on all of our social media accounts to show that there are things on the server that people can do other than explore.

I think it would be amazing if snippets of server lore were included in the Times, similar to the Tolkien Lore, because this would educate newer members about the past of MCME.
