This project focuses on the diversity of jelly fungi (heterobasidiomycetes) in the low countries. In a first phase, we compiled identification keys to all genera and species of heterobasidiomycetes (in Dutch). In a second phase, we are sampling all species in this geographic area for morphological documentation, and barcoding (ITS region). Heterobasidiomycetes with dimorphic lifecycles are cultivated, and cultures are deposited at the DSMZ fungal culture collection (Braunschweig, Germany). Our data are used in international scientific studies, and have revealed several previously undescribed species of heterobasidiomycetes.

Taxon-free approach to estimate the relative abundance of nitrophytic and nitrophobic lichens on way-side trees in the countryside. This is a simplified version of a professional monitoring scheme that follows the method described by C.M. Van Herk (1999) Mapping of ammonia pollution with epiphytic lichens in the Netherlands. Lichenologist 31: 9-20. We consider adding a website to collect data. For now, a pictural guide, printed registration form and booklet are provided. The pictural guide can also be downloaded for free. It had been sold (or given away for free) over 3000 times by the Dutch Bryological and Lichenological Society, especially to highschool students and local nature groups.

In the mycological preserves managed by the Micocyl Program (www.micocyl.es) it is necessary to have authorization for the study. This authorization is directly provided by the Micocyl Program technicians.
From the Micocyl Program, volunteers who are experts in mycological taxonomics are encouraged to record their discoveries through the Smartbasket App. The technicians of this project also carry out weekly sampling in spring and autumn (when mycological fruiting begins) and we record our field work through this App.

Since from May 2021, in collaboration with the SBI – Società Botanica Italiana, AMER – Associazione Micologica Ecologica Romana, UMI – Unione Micologica Italiana, GMB – Gruppo Micologico Bresadola, MUSE – Museo delle Scienze di Trento, Centro Micologico Friulano e Associazione Micologica Valcanale-Canal del Ferro-Tarvisio, Gruppo Micologico AMB di Crema, KCS Biotech S.R.L., Università di Pavia, AGMT – Associazione Gruppi Micologici Toscani, the Network has developed the census of macromycetes on the national territory initiative. The census was created to collect and publish data on the surveys of macromycetes fungi in a public national database available to all users, called Fungi Information System – SIF. The data are collected and sent to the Network by the subjects who adhere according to protocols and standards defined by the Scientific Committee. The transmission takes place using specific IT applications (web and mobile apps). The census and the activities of the Network for the study of mycological diversity are largely based on the voluntary contribution of amateur mycologists.

The "Mushrooms in the City" project aims to engage citizens in Coimbra, Portugal, to generate high-quality (research-grade, RG), observations of macrofungi on iNaturalist citizen science platform, mostly with associated collections. We aim to make Coimbra a model for the involvement of citizen scientists in documenting and protecting fungi for the rest of the country. As of 26 June 2024,, 252 people have recorded ca. 3500 observations, corresponding to 286 fungal species with RG identification, validated by 317 identifiers. Our RG observations contain new records for Portugal in GBIF, including globally threatened species. Note that most vouchers are still not officially deposited in COI, but available through MyCoLAB and, for a few, ITS sequences are available. The project is co-managed by Susana C. Gonçalves and Susana Cunha. Outputs: https://zenodo.org/records/10160699 and https://zenodo.org/records/10124864. Mention: https://conbio.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111/conl.13013. We have about 900 vouchers conserved in an institutional herbarium, fully recorded.
