The Effect of Violence Exposure on Subjective Adulthood Among Ethnically Diverse Urban Emerging Adults (downtown): This study will examine whether violence exposure and attending college influence 18-25 year olds reports of having reached adulthood.
Family Dynamics Survey (either campus): This study seeks to describe cultural differences in children's participation in chores and whether this participation influences parent reports of work-life balance.

We also hypothesize that because of the strong link between stress and depression, “stress sensitive” individuals may be more likely to develop depression following a severe life stressor, although future longitudinal research is needed to test this last hypothesis.|
Currently the twelve students in my lab are using data from my dissertation to pilot their ideas about what the “stress sensitive” individual would look like. They are all working on abstracts to submit to national conferences about their ideas and findings. We began running a study in May of 2011 to test our hypotheses about the “stress sensitive” phenotype. The students have been trained on the Life Stress Interview (LSI) which assesses chronic and episodic stress over the past year, the Trier Social Stress Test (TSST) which is a well-validated social stressor that reliably elicits a cortisol response, and they will be trained on the Early Adversity Interview. We will sample cortisol daily at four time points for two days to assess daily cortisol patterns, and at several time points across the TSST to determine acute stress reactivity. We are also attempting to examine interventions for stress sensitivity. We are assessing the cortisol awakening response (CAR) pre and post a stress reduction intervention administered by the Roosevelt University Counseling center.
