Having commuted to Long Hanborough for past 20yrs, driving standards have got worse each year and the respect for cyclists is awful!

But there is also blame for some cyclists and how they ride randomly and with no respect for the Highway Code and other road/footpath users. Plus the lack of lights at night, wearing headphones so not aware surroundings (walkers & runners also guilty), using phones while riding!

Most cyclists need to be insured too.More off road cycleways and pathways, Better driver / cyclist relationships, Less provocative cyclist behaviour towards car drivers. A proper ban on over rated high power scooters and cycles that put pedestrians at risk and without insurance compensation in the case of accidents.Planning Responses / Consultation, BicesterBUG WebsiteEnsuring cyclists use the routes created for them, and getting them off the roads.BBUG should Campaign AGAINST the use of cycles on Sheep Street. Rather campaign to separate any for of wheeling from traffic and pedestrians. BBUG need to work with cyclists to wear protective gear including hi vis, helmets. Too many irresponsible cyclists out there that think cycling without lights during the dark hours is acceptable, it isn’t! What price is a set of lights against a life? BBUG needs to campaign against ‘wheeling’ on pavements. Why don’t BBUG encourage cycling proficiency, too many dangerous manoeuvres by cyclists that ignore the rules (no lights on the highway, wheeling on pavement, no signals when manoeuvring etc. etc)

05/04/2025 10:31:19YesYesMain mode of transportAloneWeeklyAggression towards cyclists/ feeling unsafeBetter driver / cyclist relationshipsPublic information eventsOver recent months (since the opening of the new road system on the Banbury Road crossroads), it is clear from FB that motorists in general absolutely despise cyclists.
This is more than apparent on my cycle rides. Drivers rarely stop for you when they are supposed to and on many occasions, actively speed up when you are trying to walk across a road with or without your bicycle. They drive through red lights all the time. Some of the pedestrian crossings do not give you anywhere near enough time to cross and often, cars will continue on their journey (behind you) when the light is still flashing amber and you are still on the crossing. Motorists ignoring pedestrian crossings is almost an epidemic. Often, when don’t stop, they will wave to you, as if to say, ‘I’ve seen you and I know I should stop but I’m going too fast!’ The crossings by Lakeview Tesco take a painful amount of time to change and there are 10 of these to navigate - just to get to Next. Even when they do change and give you an ‘invitation to cross’, you take your life in your hands because often, they are largely ignored and your eyes have to be everywhere.
I’m not sure there is a solution to this hatred and I know it is not unique to Bicester but feeling like a target when you are cycling is pretty terrifying.
My partner cycles to work every day and experiences all the above and much more besides.
Maybe posting a piece of footage entitled, ‘A Bicester cyclist’, would let some motorists see, the impact of their dangerous and frighteningly entitled behaviour.
I live in hope for change but I don’t envisage it any time soon.
